The MDP Jamaica team has had a productive and busy summer working here in-country. As a brief summary of our work, we have partnered with a local farming association (Jeffrey Town Farmers Association) in addition to a Chicago-based charity (Trees That Feed Foundation). Our work is focusing on income generation for rural Jamaica through utilizing the breadfruit tree. We are looking at the potential for value-added processes such as creating breadfruit flour, roasting breadfruit for export, and other processes as well.
This past Tuesday, Kristy Graham and Dan Backman were interviewed on the national radio station Power 106 for a segment titled 'Farm Talk.' The interview lasted around 30
minutes and discussed the growing interest in the breadfruit tree, why our team is in Jamaica and our research.
Our team has also been busy meeting with the Ministry of Agriculture, farmers around the island, and processing companies. We have eaten roasted breadfruit, fried breadfruit, breadfruit pancakes, breadfruit salad, and even had the chance to mill our own flour!
