PA 5290: Cities of the Global South (2 cr.) Course Description
May, 2013 (but registration is part of spring semester)
This course examines issues related to rapid urbanization in the global south, with an emphasis on cities in sub-Saharan Africa. The extremely rapid rate of growth in African cities presents a range of public policy and planning challenges to local and national governments. Students will explore trends related to informalization of the housing sector, the growth and importance of informal economic activity, infrastructural challenges related to roads and transport, water and sewage in Africa's urban centers.
The course will meet for two weeks during the May term. The first week will consist of an intensive class-room based experience. At the end of the first week students will travel to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania for a nine-day site visit.
Week 1 topics:
Urbanization trends in the global south
Urbanization trends in Africa.
The informal sector in African cities: housing and income.
History and Development of Tanzania and Dar es Salaam.
Week 2: Dar es Salaam
The history of and structure for land use planning and development in Dar es Salaam.
The informal sector in Dar es Salaam.
Road building and transportation infrastructure in Dar es Salaam.
Slum upgrading in Dar es Salaam.
Sustainability of urbanization in Dar es Salaam.
The land development process in Dar es Salaam.
