Internship: WFP Mozambique

Duty station: Maputo, Mozambique.
Duration: 6 months; probation: 1 month; renewable.
Closing date: January 20th, 2013.

Position description: Internship to support the national Nutrition Rehabilitation Programme (NRP).

Background and Context: Within the NRP framework, the Ministry of Health (MoH), with support from United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), provides nutritional treatment (fortified corn soya blend flour) to malnourished Mozambican children, adults with HIV/TB and pregnant and lactating women.

Purpose of the internship: to support MoH and WFP in carry out the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the NRP activities within the out-patient component. This implies, based on field trips, management and coordination of data collection, entry, cleaning and analysis.

Reporting: The intern shall report to the Nutrition Program Officer at the WFP Country Office, and will work in close collaboration with MoH, partners and WFP Sub offices (SOs).

1. Support SOs in ensuring quality of data registry and in the collection of data;
2. Carry out observations of anthropometric evaluations during clinical consults;
3. Organize meetings with MoH and partners to discuss study design, and data collection and analysis, as 
well as results;
4. Supervise and train health centre personnel in performing anthropometric measurements, in the screening 
and diagnosis of malnourished patients, and the registration of patient data in registry books;
5. Ensure that health centres supported by WFP have registry material and follow up with WFP procurement 
if more materials are needed.

Expected outcomes and outputs:
Functioning data base with cleaned data ready to be analysed;
Report with the interpretation of the statistical analysis, including description of data. 
Remuneration: The monthly WFP rate is $600 plus daily allowances for field trips ract: no transport, food or accommodation benefit will be provided when at the duty station. 

Qualifications & requirements:
Currently enrolled student (must be enrolled for the duration of the internship) with a BSc./MSc. in Public 
Health, Epidemiology, Nutrition, Medical Statistics or related;
Fluent English and proficiency in Portuguese required; if not, Spanish/Italian to be considered on a case by 
case basis;
Able to work under pressure and in difficult conditions;
Highly proficient in STATA, SPSS, R, or other stat-software package.

Describe the activities undertaken on a field visit to 5 health centres in the Inhassoro district of Mozambique in order to monitor the implementation of a nutritional rehabilitation program for pregnant and lactating women (PLW), including the tools and strategies you would use to guide you in the monitoring process and assess the effective implementation of the program in each facility.
