Join an interdisciplinary and international team of students and faculty to
earn 6 credits of studio/practicum in China this summer (June 26-July 23).
We invite students in any program to enroll via the University of Washington
on a non-matriculated basis, and will assist you with the transfer of
credit.

First attend the annual conference of the International Association for
China Planning in Shanghai for five days, and then spend three weeks (July
2-23) in Chengdu, on planning and design for villages facing pressures of
urbanization in the Chengdu Plain. The Linpan ("forest basin") landscape,
settlement pattern and architecture of this region is famous for its
extremely high agricultural productivity, dense population, and resilient
irrigation and flood control system. The program includes visits to the
2000-year-old hydraulic engineering works at Dujiangyan -- a World Heritage
site that still functions today essentially as it was originally designed --
as well as villages seeking to upgrade their infrastructure and living
standards while maintaining environmental balance and social security. As
villagers pursue urban jobs for livelihood, and the city expands into the
countryside, how can we use social-ecological knowledge to help communities
and the environment adapt? Students will work with counterparts from
Sichuan University and National Cheng Kung University (Taiwain), as well as
local NGOs (the Chengdu Urban Rivers Association and WildGrass Culture) to
conduct surveys and envision different scenarios of development to produce
reference materials useful to the local Municipal Planning Bureau.

Please email Prof. Dan Abramson (abramson(at)uw.edu) with any questions.
