Critical Conversations
The Nice Slice: Capitalism, the One Percent, and the Occupy Movement

The 2008 banking crisis, growing class inequalities, and the foreclosure crisis all present challenges for global capitalism. The recession and high unemployment have contributed to the rise of two opposing movements: the Tea Party and Occupy Movement. Join us to examine these recent events, and their relationship to class, the history of labor, and public policy.

Panelists: Rose Brewer, Professor, University of Minnesota Department of African-American & African Studies; Nick Espinosa, Occupy Homes Minnesota Movement; Christopher Phalen, Professor and Chair, University of Minnesota Department of Economics; Peter Rachleff, Professor of History, Macalester College.

Moderator: Catherine R. Squires, University of Minnesota Cowles Professor of Journalism, Diversity and Equality.

Dare to Be Powerful: Assertiveness for Equity

How do you step up to be heard while being respectful? How do you stop sexist language or comments from a colleague? How do you respond when someone says, "Lighten up, it was just a joke"? In this interactive workshop, participants learn assertiveness skills, practice personal and professional bystander interventions, and become more powerful allies!

Equity & Diversity in the Search Process

This workshop describes how to incorporate equity and diversity throughout all stages in the search process, including writing a position description and interview questions, using diverse recruiting sources, understanding your unit?s Affirmative Action goals and workforce statistics, and record keeping.
