New Library Exhibit Honors U's Hmong Heritage During Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month

President Obama declared May 2013 as "Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month." In his proclamation he notes that:

"The month of May is designated as a time to recognize, appreciate, and celebrate all the contributions of our Asian and Pacific Islander Americans. Please take the opportunity this month to celebrate and learn more about the culture and history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who have helped fulfill the promise of the American dream."

In celebration of this month, Wilson Library has mounted a special exhibit which, this year, features "Celebrating Our Hmong heritage." the exhibit focuses on some of the many firsts here at the University and on four key Hmong leaders right here on campus!

The exhibit includes a timeline and some facts that just might surprise you! The exhibit is located on first floor by the information desk.

The University Libraries work to support Asian American Studies throughout each year. Some of our recently acquired books on AAS are available in a special bookshelf near the exhibit. This list includes just a sampling of some of the DVDs in our collections available in the SMART Learning Commons.

WHY I LEFT HOME: Stories about Migration, Immigration, and Globalization

The Organization for Economic Development and Cooperation lists the US as the leading destination for permanent immigrants. People emigrate for complex reasons - war, natural disaster, economic opportunity - and deal with many obstacles in pursuit of a new home. Engage in a conversation among professionals trying to assist new immigrants, some of whom will sharetheir own stories even as they have become professionals living aspects of the American dream.

Panelists: MayKao Y. Hang, President and CEO of the Wilder Foundation; John Keller, Executive Director, Immigrant Law Center; Juventino Meza, Director, NAVIGATE Minnesota; Ahmed Yusuf, Somali community activist and author of Somalis in Minnesota.

Moderator: Louis Mendoza, Associate Vice Provost, University of Minnesota Office for Equity and Diversity.

Three Upcoming Events: Muslim Journeys; Keeping Our Faculty of Color; and Deversity Through the Disciplines

Muslim Journeys

The Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys is a collection of books, films, and other resources chosen to familiarize the American public about Islam and the cultural heritage of Islamic civilizations around the world. It is intended to address both the need and the desire of the American public for trustworthy and accessible resources about Muslim beliefs and practices and the cultural heritage associated with Islamic civilizations.

The Libraries will sponsor three events in 2013. The first event (a screening and discussion of "Prince Among Slaves") was April 8. There will be two more events during the Fall 2013 semester. Watch the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf and the Diversity Outreach Calender website for updates on upcoming events.

Diversity through the Disciplines is a annual symposium showcasing the research of faculty who have received an Multicultural Research Award (formally President's Faculty Multicultural Research Award) from the Institute for Diversity, Equity, and Advocacy (IDEA).IDEA annually invites proposals for research that addresses issues related to its mission "to transform the University by enhancing the visibility and advancing the productivity of an interdisciplinary group of faculty and community scholars whose expertise in equity, diversity, and underrepresented populations will lead to innovative scholarship that addresses urgent social issues." This initiative is one of several within IDEA that seeks to strengthen community and networking among scholars and researchers on campus. Since 1996 more than 1.5 million dollars have been awarded to140 recipients through the Multicultural Research Award. Diversity through the Disciplines is one way in which IDEA and faculty recipients share their research findings.

This is the first of a series of events that will make up the Muslim Journeys series. At this event we will view the film Prince Among Slaves.

Trans* Awareness Project

Several University Affiliated groups (including the University Libraries, the Office for Equity and Diversity, the GLBTA Programs Office, the Transgender Commission, and the QSCC) have collaborated to implement the Trans* Awareness Project. You may haven seen the posters and cards around campus, and maybe you have even already seen the TAP website.

The Trans* Awareness Project is a poster and digital media campaign that attempts to challenge stereotypes and cultivate an environment which celebrates and respects people of all genders. This campaign aims to break down barriers between communities and establish positive social change by showcasing empowering snapshots of local trans* communities and bringing attention to the challenges that many trans* people face in daily life.

The Trans* Awareness Project website has electronic versions of all the campaign's posters as well as biographies for each participant. The website also has a ton of resources including worksheets, book recommendations, and a streamlined FAQ section; all of which are intended to help us think more critically about gender and it's impact on our lives.

The Office for Equity and Diversity offers educational opportunities for individuals, departments, colleges, and units. Workshops focus on a wide range of equity and diversity issues in higher education. They can also be customized for individual unit needs and concerns.

Sensitive language is used as a learning tool to address media and music which students are well aware of and use on a regular basis. American Indian Census Data to be Released THIS THURSDAY

The Census Bureau will release the "American Indian and Alaska Native Summary File (AIANSF)". This dataset will include for a total of 1,570 different indigenous nations and will be the largest data set for all of the American Indian and Alaska Native geographies that meet the population threshold of 100 people from the 2010 Decennial Census. There are going to be 70 tables of varying detail and subject matter for most of these geographies.

The data will be available on Thursday December 13 at 12:01 a.m at www.census.gov. There will be no additional releases of AIAN data from the Decennial 2010 Census.

UP! Circles (University Professional Circles) - Professional Development Program

Applications are now being accepted for a professional development opportunity sponsored by the Organizational Effectiveness division of the Office of Human Resources. University Professional Circles is a 10-month program designed to advance employee professional goals, hone interpersonal communication and networking skills, and cut across the traditional barriers that lead to staff isolation. The registration fee is $50.00. No more than 50 applicants will be selected for this cohort. The StrengthsQuest assessment is one of the tools included in the experience.

Betty Leask, associate professor in internationalization at the University of South Australia, will give the 2012-13 Mestenhauser Lecture. Leask argues that universities have a responsibility to prepare all graduates to live and work in a global society. Internationalizing the curriculum and student learning play a central role in achieving this goal. Her lecture will explore issues related to internationalization and offer conceptual and practical solutions to these issues.

In discussions of "diversity," not everyone recognizes that gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation are important points of cultural difference that merit recognition and voice. Members of the University who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer often face isolation, silence, and invisibility. This workshop is an opportunity for participants to learn about GLBTQ identities and communities, and to identify strategies they can employ to create a more open and welcoming campus climate.

Growing out of a movement to increase access for people with disabilities, the term "universal design" refers to the concept of designing products and environments to be as accessible as possible for all users. Whether it's captioning, gender neutral restrooms, curb cuts or inclusive language, the work of equity and diversity involves paying attention to how we design our classrooms, labs, offices, residence halls, work, curricula, and events to be as welcoming and inclusive as possible. In this workshop, participants learn key concepts of universal design and are given opportunities to assess the inclusivity of their own spaces, products, and communities.
