The Office for Equity and Diversity offers educational opportunities for individuals, departments, colleges, and units. Workshops focus on a wide range of equity and diversity issues in higher education. They can also be customized for individual unit needs and concerns.

CERTIFICATE WORKSHOPS

The Equity and Diversity Certificate helps participants develop tools necessary for advancing equity and diversity in all aspects of their personal and professional lives. It's free of charge and open to students, faculty and staff on all campuses of the University of Minnesota. Workshops 1 - 6 below count toward the Equity and Diversity Certificate and will be offered every semester. Contact Anne Phibbs (phib0001@umn.edu or 612-625-9973) with questions about the Certificate.

Ensuring equity and diversity in the search process is essential for increasing the diversity of candidate pools for positions, and ultimately the diversity of the University community. EOAA created this online toolkit to help guide the process.

Josef A. Mestenhauser Lecture Series on Internationalizing Higher Education
Internationalizing the Curriculum and Student Learning: 
Preparing Graduates for the 21st Century

Betty Leask, associate professor in internationalization at the University of South Australia, will give the 2012-13 Mestenhauser Lecture. Leask argues that universities have a responsibility to prepare all graduates to live and work in a global society. Internationalizing the curriculum and student learning play a central role in achieving this goal. Her lecture will explore issues related to internationalization and offer conceptual and practical solutions to these issues.

The Nice Slice: Capitalism, the One Percent, and the Occupy Movement

The 2008 banking crisis, growing class inequalities, and the foreclosure crisis all present challenges for global capitalism. The recession and high unemployment have contributed to the rise of two opposing movements: the Tea Party and Occupy Movement. Join us to examine these recent events, and their relationship to class, the history of labor, and public policy.

Panelists: Rose Brewer, Professor, University of Minnesota Department of African-American & African Studies; Nick Espinosa, Occupy Homes Minnesota Movement; Christopher Phalen, Professor and Chair, University of Minnesota Department of Economics; Peter Rachleff, Professor of History, Macalester College.

Dare to Be Powerful: Assertiveness for Equity

How do you step up to be heard while being respectful? How do you stop sexist language or comments from a colleague? How do you respond when someone says, "Lighten up, it was just a joke"? In this interactive workshop, participants learn assertiveness skills, practice personal and professional bystander interventions, and become more powerful allies!

Intercultural Communication Workshop PowerPoint and Handouts

The Diversity Outreach Collaborative sponsored an Intercultural Communications Workshop on November 3, 2011.  Thorunn Bjarnadottir, Director of Intercultural Education and Beth Isensee, Program Director for Student Engagement for International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS)  provided a 2 hour session.  

Attached you will find pdf's of their powerpoint presentation along with two handouts provided at the workshop.

GENE CHELBERG IS THE ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS & DIRECTOR OF THE DISABILITY PROGRAMS AND RESOURCE CENTER AT SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY.  PREVIOUSLY CHELBERG HELD LEADERSHIP POSITIONS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA AS THE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF DISABILITY SERVICES AND AS INTERIM DIRECTOR OF THE GLBTA PROGRAMS OFFICE CHELBERG IS THE FOUNDER OF THE DSCC, THE FIRST SUCH CULTURAL CENTER IN THE NATION.  CHELBERG WILL DISCUSS HOW HIS MULTIPLE IDENTITIES HAVE BEEN A CATALYST FOR BECOMING A SUCCESSFUL UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATOR, AND THE FIRST AMERICAN COUNCIL ON EDUCATION FELLOW WITH A DISABILITY.  HE WILL ALSO EXPLORE HOW MULTIPLE IDENTITIES SHAPE OUR LIVES AND EXAMINE HOW WE DEVELOP STUDENT LEADERSHIP AND ALLIES GIVEN THESE MULTIPLE IDENTITIES.
