Cake it Like a man

Cake it like a man

Mr. L. forced two people to go to lunch with him today so he wouldn't eat alone on his b-day. All alone. His birthday is so close to Thanksgiving, that most people smoosh them together and he doesn't even get a birthday meal from his family. I felt so bad for him, that I decided the only thing that could cheer him up was a real, live clown 4" tall, a helium balloon larger than a buick or a 2'x3' birthday card. The card was my obvious choice because I got to be a verbal cowboy again... (this time, I only held on to the conversation for 3:13.... but that's OK since I had a large-a## card to build!)

The card: nothing other than beautiful! A work of art!
(Inside: Mr. L's head with cake hat and candles.)

A pickle for your thoughts

It's a snow day.... not officially of course... but I am making it one.... curling up by the warmth of the email server.... watching my cares drift up and away like tiny flakes of individuality. I really want hot cocoa, but I forgots me to buy it.

This is my first post with the new blog engine. It feels nice to only be half a version under underblog.

Been limiting myself to 8 Christmas cookies/day. May sound easy, but extremely difficult. (Yesterday was 9!)

Anyone ever made truffles? I want to make high-end truffles this December.

Lardtastic!

On Friday, I left the Rainbow Foods with 2 packs of butter, 2 packs of margarine, 1 tub of butter flavored crisco and a half gallon of chocolate milk. The clerk worried for my health, but the fats came in handy for trapping Christie Alley under a cardboard box. Once we had her, we forced her to bake Spritz, Sugar Cookies, Gingersnaps, Sandys ("Russian Tea Cakes") and Buckeyes ("Chocolate Peanut Butter Balls"). Aside from a sifter-less start, the baking went smoothly.

Here's hoping the 6 batches of cookies last me til Thursday-

Snoring is now Illegal

This holiday weekend I shared a bedroom with my Dad. Snoring should be illegal. It's unholy. It's unnatural. It's ungodly. Even after he taped his mouth shut, the pre-snore snorts were enough to wake me up 4 times a night. I fully stand by my proposition that people should NEVER have to share a bedroom. EVER.

TXT->VOICE

It's amazing to hear people's voices for the first time when you already know them electronically.

This week, I got to talk to two such people and the difference couldn't have been starker. They were both fun, quirky, interesting emailers... but their actual personalities were night and day.

Case 1.
Her voice was richer, fuller and much more polished than I had imagined. Everything sounded very professional and thoughtful. I was impressed not only by her voice, but her wit and intelligence. (Truer words have never been spoken by someone: "Trees don't naturally move on their own." If you think about it, it's quite profound as we run around potting/repotting and decorating with nature).

Case 2.
Very disjointed. Paused. Checked to see that I was following. But never said anything of value. Paused some more. Even mid sentence. Much less interesting. I Wonder. How much time she spent. Reviewing emails before sending. Drove me crazy. Short drive. Short sentences. Short friendship.

25 years of trying...

kickmesign.jpg

Today, I attached my first "kîckme" sign to someone's back sans detectión! My initial plan involved the cliché how-ya-doing-backslap, but her thick sweater and engrossed stare were perfect for not-feeling tape.

  • Initial Detection: 0
  • Total Stick Time: 3 minutes
  • Bonding Adhesive: 5.475 square inches, clear packing tape... anchored to paper with an additional 5.475 square inches.
  • Eventual method of detection: crunching noise as she sat down, but that was after parading around the 12th floor.
<sigh>I love Fridays</sigh>

Worse than constipation

Dream Fragment:

I was waiting around my parent's house, looking for someone to take me to a doctor because it was going to happen at any moment.... I could feel it.... Nobody was really around to help, so I went to the bathroom. My water was going to break any moment. I squatted above the toilet because I didn't want it to break on the hard wood floors. Once my water broke, plenty of people came to my aid and I started to give birth. Thankfully, I woke up then so I didn't have an excruciating 8 hours of a birthing dream.... think of how tired I would have been this morning!!

Move/Save Arrested Development

Today I wrote every networks I thought could breath some fresh life into Arrested Development now that Fox has turned cold to brilliant comedy...

I hate sacrasm...

At the grocery store I spotted a new item: Rolo Bites. At last, a bite sized rolo my delicate mouth can handle.

Highlights:

  • It's nice to see my "Female Cliché" is greater than my "Work Ethic" ("one day it isn't Halloween anymore...").
  • I guess if the cautiously avoidant, paranoid recluse monocle fits, wear it!
  • This test brings to light many tough questions.... at 23% each, would I rather be accomodating to someone, or develop an interest in sex... it's a pretty tough call... they both sound pretty awful...

Caution: Wet Paint

wetpaint2.jpg Caution: Wet Paint

I THOUGHT I was being nice... 2 days after the painters left, I removed all the wet paint signs as a public courtesy. But some little snot in the department mocked me.... so I photocopied the wet paint signs and covered her desk. I added another 20 after this picture, but didn't have time to snap another pic.

Personal favorites: the chair sign, the cylindrical chair leg sign and the various hidden throughout her desk (not pictured above).

In unrelated news: I had a busride vision the other day. I am going to a potluck this weekend and on the bus I had the epiphany of bringing bread because I could fire up the old breadmaker. Then, when I got to work, the potluck was already assigned. Mine: bread.... ooooooh....

Smell ya later

I recognize many people in the department by their purfume as they walk past my door. Today, I have smelled one girl ALL MORNING LONG. Her favorite purfume must be pretty similar to wet, white hallway paint.

Chicken or Egg (Egg!)

I hate [sniveling, whiney, fickle] shoppers like me.

Sunday was my weekly Haul-O-Groceries and after 20 minutes of wandering aimlessly collectin' extras, I finally decided to have CHICKEN for dinner.... but Rainbow was completely sold out! Who runs out of chicken? I put my freezables back into the freezer, abandoned the rest of my cart and checked out with just eggs and motz cheese.

Then I went to Cub and recollected the accoutrements (and chicken that was 50% off!). Plus, they had bags of halloween candy for $1. {aside: I may or may not be in possession of five different types of candy.}

Checking out, I was wow-ed by a fingerprint reader... it seemed so space-age to pay with your pinkie....
Me: That is so cool....
Teller: Or it'll be a huge problem.....

Pessimism. Chickens. Eggs.

November 06, 2005

Yup, my whole week can be summarized thusly:

I have had some very good meals this week (and I have even dreamed about eating various foods three times this week). Since I know Underblog doesn't like posts about food, I'll spare you everything but the dream about a BBQ Chicken Pizza with garlic sauce, motzerella cheese, jalepeños and onions. Gosh darn it was delicious.

I worked on my plays in Target for a couple hours this weekend. Was amazed at the variety of people who came. Poor, affluent, male, female, ugly, attractive, young, old. I was just about to write that I didn't see any cool people, but I forgot that I was sitting there writing all of this down.

After a month hiatus (crappy sports ruin my life again), Arrested Development is back for an hour episode tomorrow. Aaaaah. Watching that show makes me want to be a writer. (Just like Steve Martin's Shop Girl inspired me to go to Target to polish off some plays.)

Army of Spiders

spidercake.jpg
Forgot my picture of the army of spider cupcakes lurching across my kitchen table, so I took this photo at work.... the poor cake has been through 2 car rides, a bus trip and 15 minutes of walking. I swear he looked cuter at the onset of his big adventure.

Last night, I drempt that I found my blue pen and fingernail clipper in the washing machine. I was so excited that I finally found them and wondered why I didn't think of looking there earlier. I checked the machine on my way to work, but sadly, it was just a dream....

But not all was lost because I had coffee with Underblog. His visit was worth at least 2 blue pens and a finger nail clipper.
