The University of Minnesota Rochester has a new degree, the Bachelor of Science in Health Professions (BSHP), for students who want to complete their four year degree while getting certified in one of the following four areas:

Affordable Health Care for the Poor: Dialogue with Dr. Devi Shetty

The Center for Health Equity will host a talk with Dr. Devi Shetty, world-renowned cardiac surgeon and founder and chairman of Bangalore's Narayana Hrudayalaya, one of the largest hospitals in the world.

Dr. Shetty was the first Indian to perform heart surgery on newborns and was the first to use a microchip camera to close holes in the heart. Dr. Shetty will share his insights on providing affordable healthcare for the poor.

Beauty and Brutality: An Uncustomary Journey into Global Medicine

Dr. Stephen Swanson, CLA alumnus and physician in pediatric international health, will discuss his career path, share lessons he has learned, provide advice for students, and summarize the challenges and rewards of working in global health at this Magraw-Fuller lunchtime lecture.

Dr. Swanson is a board certified pediatrician trained in infectious diseases and tropical medicine. Before attending college, he traveled to the Philippines and India to volunteer at orphanages including working with Sisters of Charity (Mother Teresa). Later, as a student at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Swanson went to Rwanda to care for refugees during the genocide crisis.

It's National Public Health Week - Attend the Annual Film Festival!

Everyone is invited to attend the 7th annual School of Public Health Film Festival, hosted in celebration of National Public Health Week, April 4-8. All film goers will receive:

FREE admission, FREE food, and FREE beverages

This year's festival will focus on mental health, food, nutrition, social justice, health care, environment, climate change, HIV and sex education.

Doors open at 5pm, films start at 5:30, followed by Q&A sessions.

Mental Health Training: For Students Who Want to Help Others

The Stamp Out Stigma Committee and the Provost's Committee on Mental Health are offering a mental health training for students on April 6, 2011 from 7:30 -8:30 pm in the Mississippi Room of Coffman Memorial Union.

Students who receive the training will have an opportunity in the future to provide similar training to other students.

Our training will highlight:

- the state of mental health issues on campus,
- the valuable role that students play in a broad public health approach to mental health,
- the existing campus resources that can support them when they want to help other students, and
- the information available on the mental health web site at www.mentalhealth.umn.edu and effective ways for students to identify, approach, support and refer fellow students in distress.

The trainers for this session will be Barbara Blacklock, MA, Disability
Services, Gary Christenson, MD, Boynton Mental Health, and Salina Renninger, Ph.D., University Counseling & Consulting Services. Questions? Call 612 624-5862.
