Oh, silly shows.
The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, 2/19/08 10:30pm, NBC
I saw the part of the show where he was reading answers to questions given to kids 10 and under.
Likes:
1) Jay Leno’s laugh makes me laugh
2) It was very interesting to see how even children have biases and often stick to gender roles
3) Kids can come up with some pretty clever things (i.e. Q: What does the president do all day? A: Has meetings, does paperwork, makes decisions, but also just sit backs and thinks ‘I’m president. I rock.’
4) Jay Leno acknowledged when the statements made by kids were sexist or ignorant
Dislikes:
1)Some of the answers made me cringe.
Examples:
a) Emily, 10 years old- Who would make a better president, your mom or dad? My dad would make a better president because he knows things like math and logic. My mom couldn’t be because I don’t think knowing how to cook and do laundry qualifies you to be president.
b) Finish this quote: We have nothing to fear but… “Hillary Clinton”
2) It’s too bad that some kids don’t know better because they probably have parents that reinforce this sexism
Inside Edition, 2/20/08 4:00, ABC
I happened to flip on the TV, and Inside Edition was on. I never watch this, but it caught my attention because they were talking about Michelle Obama. They were comparing her to Jackie Kennedy.
Likes: I can’t think of anything that I liked about the show. However, it was probably meant as a compliment because people really like "Jackie O".
Dislikes: It was as if the segment was trying to make Michelle Obama “more white.” Almost like, it wasn’t letting Michelle be her own person. It seemed like they had to compare her to a strong white woman in order for her to be considered more legitimate as a strong African American woman. I found the whole thing really annoying. They compared ridiculous things like: a red suit, flipped haircut, belted jacket and off the shoulder wedding dress.
3) Frasier, 2/20/08 11:00, Lifetime
The episode was about Frasier getting a temporary assistant on his radio show. This woman ends up being a hit and the station wants to make them a permanent team.
Likes: I watch reruns of this show every night with my boyfriend. I enjoy how even though Niles and Frasier act like they take themselves so seriously, everyone is able to laugh at themselves. The humor is quick-witted and fun. They are all ridiculous, so it’s very entertaining.
Dislikes: I think this was the only episode I remember that had someone who wasn’t Caucasian. Normally, the only “diversity” is that Daphne is from England.
