Three T.V. Shows

Hey y'all! So this week I watched:

1) Lipstick Jungle, Season One Pilot, NBC, original air date 02/07/2008
I really liked how this show portrayed women as very powerful and business-savvy. The women were the heads of their family, the breadwinners, and high-ranking in their respective positions. One of the women even yells at a man for attempting to "rescue her" and is adamant about the fact that she can rescue herself. The three main women on the show also have a very strong bond of friendship.
There was a lot I didn't like about this show, however. One of the first events of the show is Victory, one of the main characters, gets a bad review of her newest fashion line. She fixes this by crying incessantly and eating cupcakes. Throughout the episode she is over-dramatic and emotional. There is limited racial diversity. Cheating on your husband is glamorized. One of the women is portrayed as somewhat manipulative. All three women are always dressed in fancy designer clothes and wearing heels.

2) Lost, Season 4 Episode 3, ABC, original air date 02/14/2008
I liked that Jack finally let Kate do something somewhat dangerous without him going with her. This is a big step for him, since he is very protective of her. The show also portrayed women as powerful and influential.
I didn't like that Jack let Kate go with Sayid for the sole reason that she could make Sawyer do anything and that Sawyer would never let anything happen to her. I also didn't like how the show portrayed women as manipulative, although men are also portrayed as being manipulative in this episode.

3) Greek, Season 1 Episode 5, ABC Family, original air date 08/06/2007
There's not a whole lot about this episode, entitled "Liquid Courage," that I enjoyed. Jen K was the only female on the show that I thought was portrayed in a positive light. Her participation is crucial to Rusty's building of Mount Vesuvius. She also takes the reins and makes the first moves in her relationship with Rusty, showing that women can be in charge of their romantic relationships, instead of the way relationships are normally portrayed in the media.
There was quite a bit that I didn't like about this episode. Besides Casey and Ashley getting drunk and belligerent, I didn't like how dependent Casey was on the approval of her boyfriend's parents and how she did not trust her boyfriend at a dinner with a girl he had slept with. She felt the need to follow him and check in on him when she really had nothing to worry about. I really don't like how much influence Casey's relationship with Evan has on Casey's actions, thoughts, and worries.
