Song Lyrics

Blog 4

The first song I chose is Woman is the Nigger of the World by John Lennon. In the song, Lennon expresses his feelings about the sexist ideals our society holds towards women. I see the song as positive, even though he is pointing out all the negative attitudes people have about women. He uses strong language in the song to get his point across. There's numerous double standards of women in the song, and I think it was very brave of him to address these issues.

JOHN LENNON lyrics - Woman Is The Nigger Of The World

Woman is the nigger of
the world
Yes she is...think about it
Woman is the nigger of
the world
Think about it...do
something about it

We make her paint her
face and dance
If she won't be slave ,we
say that she don't love us
If she's real, we say she's
trying to be a man
While putting her down we
pretend that she is above us
Woman is the nigger of
the world...yes she is
If you don't believe me take a
look to the one you're with
Woman is the slaves of
the slaves
Ah yeah...better scream
about it
We make her bear and raise
our children
And then we leave her flat for
being a fat old mother hen
We tell her home is the only
place she would be
Then we complain that she's
too unworldly to be our friend
Woman is the nigger of
the world...yes she is
If you don't believe me take a
look to the one you're with
Woman is the slaves of
the slaves
Yeah (think about it)

We insult her everyday on TV
And wonder why she has no
guts or confidence
When she's young we kill her
will to be free
While telling her not to be so
smart we put her down for being so dumb
Woman is the nigger of
the world...yes she is
If you don't believe me take a
look to the one you're with
Woman is the slaves of
the slaves
Yes she is...if you believe me,
you better scream about it.

Repeat:
We make her paint her
face and dance
We make her paint her
face and dance We make her paint her
face and dance

The second song is "Under My Thumb" by The Rolling Stones. It's always been a favorite of mine. While listening to it with my mom one day, she pointed out the sexist lyrics. I had never thought of them in that way, but she was right. When I googled "sexist songs" this song along with a few other Stones songs came up. In the song, Jagger sings about taking all the power and control away from a woman, and essentially treating her like a pet of his. Pretty sexist, but still a great song.

Under My Thumb

Under my thumb
The girl who once had me down
Under my thumb
The girl who once pushed me around

It's down to me
The difference in the clothes she wears
Down to me, the change has come,
She's under my thumb

Ain't it the truth babe?

Under my thumb
The squirmin' dog who's just had her day
Under my thumb
A girl who has just changed her ways

It's down to me, yes it is
The way she does just what she's told
Down to me, the change has come
She's under my thumb
Ah, ah, say it's alright

Under my thumb
A siamese cat of a girl
Under my thumb
She's the sweetest, hmmm, pet in the world

It's down to me
The way she talks when she's spoken to
Down to me, the change has come,
She's under my thumb
Ah, take it easy babe
Yeah

It's down to me, oh yeah
The way she talks when she's spoken to
Down to me, the change has come,
She's under my thumb
Yeah, it feels alright

Under my thumb
Her eyes are just kept to herself
Under my thumb, well I
I can still look at someone else

It's down to me, oh that's what I said
The way she talks when she's spoken to
Down to me, the change has come,
She's under my thumb
Say, it's alright

Say it's all...
Say it's all...

Take it easy babe
Take it easy babe
Feels alright
Take it, take it easy babe

Lyrics

POSITIVE- Keep ya Head Up
By: Tupac
Some say the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice
I say the darker the flesh then the deeper the roots
I give a holler to my sisters on welfare
Tupac cares, and don't nobody else care
And uhh, I know they like to beat ya down a lot
When you come around the block brothas clown a lot
But please don't cry, dry your eyes, never let up
Forgive but don't forget, girl keep your head up
And when he tells you you ain't nuttin don't believe him
And if he can't learn to love you you should leave him
Cause sista you don't need him
And I ain't tryin to gas ya up, I just call em how I see em
You know it makes me unhappy (what's that)
When brothas make babies, and leave a young mother to be a pappy
And since we all came from a woman
Got our name from a woman and our game from a woman
I wonder why we take from our women
Why we rape our women, do we hate our women?
I think it's time to kill for our women
Time to heal our women, be real to our women
And if we don't we'll have a race of babies
That will hate the ladies, that make the babies
And since a man can't make one
He has no right to tell a woman when and where to create one
So will the real men get up
I know you're fed up ladies, but keep your head up

[Chorus]

Keep ya head up, oooo child things are gonna get easier
ooooo child things are gonna get brighter [2x]

[Verse Two:]

Aiyyo, I remember Marvin Gaye, used to sing ta me
He had me feelin like black was tha thing to be
And suddenly tha ghetto didn't seem so tough
And though we had it rough, we always had enough
I huffed and puffed about my curfew and broke the rules
Ran with the local crew, and had a smoke or two
And I realize momma really paid the price
She nearly gave her life, to raise me right
And all I had ta give her was my pipe dream
Of how I'd rock the mic, and make it to tha bright screen
I'm tryin to make a dollar out of fifteen cents
It's hard to be legit and still pay tha rent
And in the end it seems I'm headin for tha pen
I try and find my friends, but they're blowin in the wind
Last night my buddy lost his whole family
It's gonna take the man in me to conquer this insanity
It seems tha rain'll never let up
I try to keep my head up, and still keep from gettin wet up
You know it's funny when it rains it pours
They got money for wars, but can't feed the poor
Say there ain't no hope for the youth and the truth is
it ain't no hope for tha future
And then they wonder why we crazy
I blame my mother, for turning my brother into a crack baby
We ain't meant to survive, cause it's a setup
And even though you're fed up
Huh, ya got to keep your head up

[Chorus]

[Verse Three:]

And uhh
To all the ladies havin babies on they own
I know it's kinda rough and you're feelin all alone
Daddy's long gone and he left you by ya lonesome
Thank the Lord for my kids, even if nobody else want em
Cause I think we can make it, in fact, I'm sure
And if you fall, stand tall and comeback for more
Cause ain't nuttin worse than when your son
wants to kno why his daddy don't love him no mo'
You can't complain you was dealt this
hell of a hand without a man, feelin helpless
Because there's too many things for you to deal with
Dying inside, but outside you're looking fearless
While tears, is rollin down your cheeks
Ya steady hopin things don't all down this week
Cause if it did, you couldn't take it, and don't blame me
I was given this world I didn't make it
And now my son's getten older and older and cold
From havin the world on his shoulders
While the rich kids is drivin Benz
I'm still tryin to hold on to my survivin friends
And it's crazy, it seems it'll never let up, but
please... you got to keep your head up

Somebody that who can come li-li-lick the clit

We can go from a fly ass jetta to a Coupe De Ville
Hotel tally ho or the Beverly Hill
A real nigga not the run of the mill
To come and spank me and make me shoot to kill
From the kitchen then you can move me
To the jaccuzzi and out the booty
Come and do your duty
Me and fat dick Ludacris making us a movie
Butt naked in a bed of cash
Make tough stuff stutter when I shake my ass
Damn she back, I though she a thing of the past
Cause I'm a bad bitch and I'm off the glass (Okay)
Having sex in little jets menage'tois
Getting buck wild no matter where we are
Indie 500 in the back of the car
In a dark ass club on the back of a bar
Never want, never ever wanna leave
Work for me like league over seas
I want a man to fulfill my needs
To keep my body trembling and buckle my knees

[Ludacris]
I wanna li-li-li-lick you from your head to your toes

I want a nigga that'll grab the weave
And turn my eyes Chinese
Tell me baby can you handle me?

Then I'll pull the ass out
Make you bounce till you pass out
Or we can cut up in the grass
And give the neighbors a flash
Can you tell me who the bad motherfucker now?

And I wanna do, do all the things that I never did

I like a nigga when he face down, mouth wide
Polo down with them blades on the ride
Give me a pound with the case on the side
But it's okay I'm gon break something tonight
Oh see get on your knees
And I'll show you what's my fantasy
Like up in the coupe, coupe

So,..I chose these songs because they are both rap songs and there are more parallels to be drawn. Both artists are male. They both are also single artists and the fact that there make plays an important role because they both discuss some view of woman in one way or another.

Tupac is rapping about caring for people in particular woman. His most powerful lines to me are about abortion and his role as a man. He says that men have no place in controlling womans decisions regarding their unborn children because as a man, you can never have such a responsibility. He also addresses the over all ridiculous trend of disrespecting woman. Raising babies who hate the ladies. He is arguing in the name of womans oppression and its good stuff!

Ludacris however is talking all about sex. He talks about "\licking woman from head to toe" and talking about how he will fulfill any fantasy she has. Gross dued. These lyrics are disrespectful and serve as means to further objectify woman. Ludacris in particular as an "artist" has said very little in his over all career that is worth noting. You would think with such a strong voice he would feel compelled to say something worth while.

Positive vs. Negative

The song that came to my mind when speaking about women in a positive way was yes, Destiny's Child "Survivor." This song came out on Destiny's Child's third album and became popular around the same time CBS's reality series "Survivor" was gaining popularity. The album itself sold more copies in its first week than any other girl group had done in the past. I think the song itself is a great reminder that women are strong and that they can keep going on with their life without the help of others and in this case without a man.
Survivor.

(Verse 1)
Now that you are out of my life,
I'm so much better,
You thought that I'd be weak without ya,
But I'm stronger,
You thought that I'd be broke without ya,
But I'm richer,
You thought that I'd be sad without ya,
I laugh harder,
You thought I wouldn't grow without ya,
Now I'm wiser,
You thought that I'd be helpless without ya,
But I'm smarter,
You thought that I'd be stressed without ya,
But I'm chillin'
You thought I wouldn't sell without ya,
Sold nine million.

[Chorus]
I'm a survivor (what),
I'm not gonna give up (what),
I'm not gon' stop (what),
I'm gonna work harder (what),
I'm a survivor (what),
I'm gonna make it (what),
I will survive (what),
Keep on survivin' (what),
I'm a survivor (what),
I'm not gonna give up (what),
I'm not gon' stop (what),
I'm gonna work harder (what),
I'm a survivor (what),
I'm gonna make it (what),
I will survive (what),
Keep on survivin' (what).

(Verse 2)
Thought I couldn't breathe without you,
I'm inhalin'
You thought I couldn't see without you,
Perfect vision,
You thought I couldn't last without ya,
But I'm lastin'
You thought that I would die without ya,
But I'm livin'
Thought that I would fail without ya,
But I'm on top,
Though it would be over by now,
But it won't stop,
You thought that I would self-destruct,
But I'm still here,
Even in my years to come,
I'm still gon' be here.

[Chorus]
I'm a survivor (what),
I'm not gonna give up (what),
I'm not gon' stop (what),
I'm gonna work harder (what),
I'm a survivor (what),
I'm gonna make it (what),
I will survive (what),
Keep on survivin' (what),
I'm a survivor (what),
I'm not gonna give up (what),
I'm not gon' stop (what),
I'm gonna work harder (what),
I'm a survivor (what),
I'm gonna make it (what),
I will survive (what),
Keep on survivin' (what).

(Bridge)
I'm wishin' you the best,
Pray that you are blessed,
Much success, no stress, and lots of happiness,
(I'm better than that)
I'm not gonna blast you on the radio,
(I'm better than that)
I'm not gonna lie on you or your family, yo,
(I'm better than that)
I'm not gonna hate you in the magazine,
(I'm better than that)
I'm not gonna compromise my Christianity,
(I'm better than that)
You know I'm not gonna diss you on the Internet
Cause my momma told me better than that.

[Chorus]
I'm a survivor (what),
I'm not gonna give up (what),
I'm not gon' stop (what),
I'm gonna work harder (what),
I'm a survivor (what),
I'm gonna make it (what),
I will survive (what),
Keep on survivin' (what),
I'm a survivor (what),
I'm not gonna give up (what),
I'm not gon' stop (what),
I'm gonna work harder (what),
I'm a survivor (what),
I'm gonna make it (what),
I will survive (what),
Keep on survivin' (what).

After all of the darkness and sadness,
Still comes happiness,
If I surround myself with positive things,
I'll gain prosperity.

[Chorus]
I'm a survivor (what),
I'm not gonna give up (what),
I'm not gon' stop (what),
I'm gonna work harder (what),
I'm a survivor (what),
I'm gonna make it (what),
I will survive (what),
Keep on survivin' (what),
I'm a survivor (what),
I'm not gonna give up (what),
I'm not gon' stop (what)(Don't stop me now)
I'm gonna work harder (what),
I'm a survivor (what),
I'm gonna make it (what),
I will survive (what),
Keep on survivin' (what).

[Chorus]
I'm a survivor (what),
I'm not gonna give up (what),
I'm not gon' stop (what),
I'm gonna work harder (what),
I'm a survivor (what),
I'm gonna make it (what),
I will survive (what),
Keep on survivin' (what),
I'm a survivor (what),
I'm not gonna give up (what),
I'm not gon' stop (what),
I'm gonna work harder (what),
I'm a survivor (what),
I'm gonna make it (what),
I will survive (what),
Keep on survivin' (what).

As for a song that speaks of women in a negative way I really didn't know of a song so I looked online and found Rich Boy's "Touch That Ass." Rich Boy is a rap artist and does solo performances. I think the title can speak for itself that he is obviously talking about a woman's behind and the first speaking lines say "I'm pimpin' like that" which I think anyone would say that the song is talking about pimps and their hoes. In the song he is asking if he can touch her ass and he will pay her if she lets him (he asks her to do other stuff as well). The lyrics of the song are very misogynistic and violence is represented as well through the gunshots in the background. He's pretty much saying he has all the money in the world, and money is power for him which gives him power over her.

Touch That Ass

(Yeah Rich Boy man I'm pimpin' like that)

[Rich Boy]
I keep flickin' these dollars girl and... you know I just got
somethin' on my mind... Hold on Polow man stop throwin' money man
let me see what's happenin' wit' this man

[Chorus]
It's one thing I gotta ask, can I touch that ass?
Touch that ass, yeah touch that ass
If I fly ya first class, can I touch that ass?
Touch that ass, yeah touch that ass
Now I don't mind throwin' cash, can I touch that ass?
Touch that ass, yeah touch that ass
Ya homegirl kinda bad, can I touch her ass?
Touch her ass, yeah touch her ass

[Verse 1]
Catch me on Cheetah's wit a down dick eater
Standin' on the block in a fresh wife beater
Filet mignon, me and Polow Da Don
Why they call you Rich Boy? Look at my charm
Look at my bracelet and look at my arm
Shakin' my wrist might just start a snowstorm
Up in the club and we gettin' it on
Poppin' big bottles and spillin' Patron
D-Boys be the squad Zone 4 be the label
Got a 645 wit' the satellite cable
They say I wouldn't make it but I still made it happen
One point three mill' and just start rappin'
Yeah I got a room when you suck on my dick
'Cause if you suck on my dick you better swallow that shit
Ya young bitch, niggas still runnin they mouth
*gunshots*

[Chorus]

[verse 2]
One dollar, two dollar, three dollar, four
When I leave the club I take two whores
Maybe one more, back to the Doubletree
Hoes wanna double me and sip bubbly
Let's play a lil' game, Simon Says
Simon Says "why don't you give Rich Boy some head?"
No lie, I'm a cool dude
Not tryin' to be rude, just tryin' to touch you
Yeah, I'm lookin' for that super dome
I ain't talkin' 'bout the field they throw the ball on
I'm a ball on, make that ass roll
Pussy look like gold comin' down that pole
Got the whole club out of control
Fake ballers in the bitch throwin' rent money, stupid bitch
I laugh at that shit, what you wanna do?
I got hundred dollar bills, tens and twenties too

[Chorus]

[Verse 3]
I'm takin' my money and spendin' it all
All these thick girls that I wanna take home
Throwin' big faces until they all gone
While I watch all these girls take off they thong
Mr. DJ won't you turn up my song
Bouncin' that ass I don't see nothin' wrong
One bitch, two or three bankrolls
Eighty-five thousand dollars worth of Russian rose gold
Take a picture of ya broad, put it in my iPod
She lick it dry clean when my dick get hard
Ain't playin' wit'cha baby can I get a lil' grip
Spend a couple chips, I break ya off a big tip

Ben Folds vs. John Mayer

Negative song: Ben Folds "Bitches ain't shit"
Bitches ain't shit, bitches ain't shit
Bitches ain't shit but hoes and tricks
Lick on these nuts and suck the dick
Lets get the fuck out after you're done
And I hops in my ride to make a quick run...
I used to know a bitch named Eric Wright
We used to roll around and fuck the hoes at night
Tighter than a mutharfuckin' gangsta beats
And we was ballin' on the muthafuckin' Compton streets

Peep that shit, got deep and it was on
Number one song after number one song
Long as my muthafuckin' pockets was fat
I didn't give a fuck where the bitch was at
But she was hangin' with a white bitch doin' the shit she do
Suckin' on his dick just to get a buck or two
And the ends that she got meant nothin'
Now she's suing cuz the shit she be doin' ain't shit

Bitches can't hang with the streets
She found herself short
Now she's takin' me to court
That's some real conversation for your ass

I once had a bitch named Mandy May
Used to be up in them guts like everyday
The pussy was the bomb, had a nigga on sprung
I was in love like a muthafucka lickin' the protung
The homies used to tell me that she wasn't no good
But I'm the maniac in black, Mr. Snoop Eastwood
So I figure niggas wouldn't trip with mine
Guess what? Got gaffled by one time

I'm back in the muthafuckin' county jail
Six months on my chest, now it's time to bail
I get's released on a hot sunny day
My nigga D.O.C. and my homey Dr Dre
Scooped in a coupe, Snoop we got the news
Your girl was trickin' while you was draped in your county blues
I ain't been out a second
Now I already gotta do
Some muthafuckin chin checkin

Move up the block as we groove down the block
See my girl's house, Dre, pass the glock
Kick in the door, I look on the floor
It's my little cousin Daz and he's fuckin' my hoe
I uncocked my shit...
I'm heart-broke but I'm still locked
Man, fuck that bitch!
...3,...4,...

Bitches ain't shit but hoes and tricks
Lick on these nuts and suck the dick
Gets the fuck out after you're done
And I hops in my ride to make a quick run...
I used to know a bitch named Eric Wright
We used to roll around and fuck the hoes at night
Tighter than a mutharfuckin' gangsta beats
And we was ballin' on the muthafuckin' Compton streets

Bitches can't hang with the streets
Bitches can't hang with the streets
Bitches can't hang with the streets
Bitches can't hang with the streets

-Just realized someone else picked this song as well but when I read the topic this was the first song that came to mind that I actually knew and portrayed a negative image of women. The entire song reaks of a sexist tone and continually cuts women down primarily by referring to them as "bitches" throughout the song. Women are considering mere sex objects and that's as far as their duties go, they should not be doing anything other than pleasing a man according to this song.

Positive song: John Mayer "Your Body is a Wonderland"
We got the afternoon
You got this room for two
One thing I've left to do
Discover me
Discovering you

One mile to every inch of
Your skin like porcelain
One pair of candy lips and
Your bubblegum tongue

And if you want love
We'll make it
Swim in a deep sea
Of blankets
Take all your big plans
And break 'em
This is bound to be awhile

Your body is a wonderland
Your body is a wonder (I'll use my hands)
Your body is a wonderland

Something 'bout the way the hair falls in your face
I love the shape you take when crawling towards the pillowcase
You tell me where to go and
Though I might leave to find it
I'll never let your head hit the bed
Without my hand behind it

You want love?
We'll make it
Swim in a deep sea
Of blankets
Take all your big plans
And break 'em
This is bound to be awhile

Your body is a wonderland
Your body is a wonder (I'll use my hands)
Your body is a wonderland

Damn baby
You frustrate me
I know you're mine all mine all mine
But you look so good it hurts sometimes

-I believe the title says it all and who seriously does not like this song?? Although the song is still mainly focused around a woman's physical body it has a completely opposite tone of "Bitches ain't shit". The song is full of compliments and it is all about what the woman wants ("you want love?"). This song is very empowering to women as they can believe that there are still some men out there who believe in equality in the bedroom.

This Image

In an add for an organization I support and believe in, I unfortunately found an image that was somewhat questionable in its message. The organization was PETA which is a promoter if animal rights and good and fair treatment of animals. In an add promoting vegetarianism there is a woman "dressed" like Uncle Sam in the iconic "I Want You" poster but she is wanting us not to join the army but to become a vegetarian. She is in a bikini top and her breasts are the focal point of the picture. She is a blond, tan, and extremely made up woman.

This image is gross. Sex is used as a manipulation through exploiting woman and there bodies. Its upsetting. I absolutely would have noticed this image before class because its off the wall!

Lyrics

Good Song/Bad Song

Bad Song:
Brand New- Jude Law and a Semester Abroad

Whatever poison is in this bottle will leave me broken sore and stiff.
But it's the genie at the bottom who I'm sucking at.
He owes me one last wish.
SO HERES A present to let you know I still exist.
I hope the next boy that you kiss has something terribly contagious on his lips.

But I got a plan. Drink for forty days and forty nights.
A sip for every second-hand tick.
And for every time you fed me the line,
“you mean so much to me...”. I'm without you.

Tell all the English boys you meet about the American boy back in the states.
The American boy you used to date.
Who would do anything you say.
Tell all the English boys you meet about the American boy back in the states.
The American boy you used to date.
Who would do anything you say.

And even if her plane crashes tonight she'll find some way to disappoint me,
by not burning in the wreckage, or drowning at the bottom of the sea.
“Jess, I still taste you, thus reserve my right to hate you.”
And all this empty space that you create does nothing for my flawless sense of style.
its 8:45. The weather is getting better by the hour.
I hope it rains there all the time.
And if you ever said you miss me then don't say you never lied.
I'm without you.

Tell all the English boys you meet about the American boy back in the states.
The American boy you used to date.
Who would do anything you say.
Tell all the English boys you meet about the American boy back in the states.
The American boy you used to date.
Who would do anything you say

Who would do anything you say.

Never gonna get it right
You're never gonna get it
Never gonna get it right
You're never gonna get it
Never gonna get it right
You're never gonna get it

Never gonna get it right
You're never gonna get it
Never gonna get it right
You're never gonna get it
Never gonna get it right
You're never gonna get it
Never gonna get it right
You're never gonna get it

no more songs about you. After this one I'm done. You are, you are, You're gone
Okay, no more songs about you. After this one I'm done. You are, you are, You're gone
Okay, no more songs about you. After this one I'm done. You are, you are, You're gone
Okay, no more songs about you. After this one I'm done. You are, you are, You're gone

What is wrong with this song? Truthfully, I don’t really know. I don’t listen to music that speaks too ill of women.
This song is, obviously, a song from a jilted ex-boyfriend. His heart has been broken, and now he wishes nothing but bad luck upon her.
I suppose, in the grande scheme of things, that this is not a very healthy song. Nobody should wish these things upon a person.
I guess, I could say that this song paints the women in the song as a malicious bitch, and that her main intention in ending the relationship was to hurt him.
Maybe because this song might paint women as being no-good cheaters who jump at the chance to have foreign affairs with “English” boys.
That’s the best I’ve got.

Good Song:

Nada Surf- Mother’s Day
I wanna know
Do you have the balls to ask?
What do you see when you look at a girl?
Is she a game you wanna win?
If no one wa looking
What would you do to get in?
Do you have friends who would be proud
If you went in for the kill?
Do you have friends who would do it
Even against her will?

What if they did that to your sister?
What if they did that to your mother?
Why are we so slow?

I bet you think you're such a hottie
But a body afraid is not a sexual body
Everybody's been laughed at
And everybody's been left out but,
That's no excuse to turn it around
No boy has the right to hold a girl down

On your star wars sheets
When you get the scene
Was she seducing you
Or did she want to scream?

It's you versus you versus you
I can't forget that tomorrow's Mother's Day,
I'm talking to you
You know who you are
Going too far
You'll feel good for ten minutes
She'll be screwed up for life
Blue balls and all of that bullshit

I really like this song.
It’s a song from a band called Nada Surf; they’re an indie rock band that came gained recognition back in 1996 with a song called “Popular.”
I think it’s really cool that the band has decided to tackle a subject like rape in their song.
The song doesn’t empower women or anything blatantly, but I think it helps the idea of sex to grow when the band (that is made of of four men) forces men to think about how far is too far.

Lyrics

When I was trying to think about what to do for this assignment I first thought of Tim'm West for my positive lyrics artist. However, he has chosen to keep all of his lyrics out of print, and therefore, I found an interview of him instead, where he speaks to his work. Needless to say, I was disappointed that I was unable to find his lyrics. Tim'm is a gay rapper who felt he wasn't welcomed into the hip-hop world, so he decided to become a hip-hop activist for queer life and acceptance in the hip-hop community.

The person I thought of first when I needed to pinpoint "bad" lyrics was Ja Rule, a self professed homophobe who often slanders women and queers in his music. In the song "I'll Fuck U Girl," Ja Rule creates a relationship between women and money, using misogynistic lyrics to inform and enforce his heterosexuality.

"I'll Fuck U Girl (Skit)"

Tell 'em
Reemo.....Distribution
Well, you know what we'll do....tell 'em (baby)
You know I.......(whachya gonna do now?)

Fuck ya girl!

Face down ass up
You know we like to
Fuck ya girl!

In the middle of the night
Put it in your butt
You know what's up I'll
Fuck ya girl!

If the puss gets dry
And the bitch gotta curl
Rub it in ya hair
I wanna
Fuck ya girl!

With my dick in her mouth
Chokin' her out (err)
Still gonna
Fuck ya girl!

(Hahaha!)
(This mother fucker's straight)

That's right, come on now!
All you bitches
Ain't give me no pussy before in here
Ya know what I'd say?
Oh, I ain't mad at you (That shit's gonna cost you)

Tina? You know what I'd do?
I'm gonna fuck you girl! (A thousand dollars)
Sherry? I'm gonna fuck you girl! (A thousand dollars)
Maria? I'm gonna fuck you girl! (A thousand dollars)
Lisa? I'm gonna fuck you girl! (A thousand dollars)

Haha!
Those bitches across the world
I'm gonna fuck you girl!
(Wait a minute! You mother fucking talkin' all that shit
That shit's comin' out your budget
Them hoes cost a thousand dollars a piece

Young ass nigga
But ya still my artist, baby king!
Ladies and gentlemen, baby king!
Ladies and gentlemen, god bless and good night.
I wanna goddamn thank all the mother fuckers
who put this together, my mother fucking self.
Anybody who question me...hmm, hold on
Where's my mother fucking bouncers?)

good lyrics vs. bad lyrics

So-What am I not s'pposed to have an opinion
Should I keep quiet just because I'm a woman
Call me a bitch cause I speak what's on my mind
Guess it's easier for you to swallow if I sat and smiled

When a female fires back suddenly big talker don't know how to act
So he does what any little boy will do
Makin' up a few false rumors or two
That for sure is not a man to me,slanderin' names for popularity
It's sad you only get your fame through controversy
But now it's time for me to come and give you more to say

This is for my girls all around the world
Who have come across a man who don't respect your worth
Thinking all women should be seen not heard
So what do we do girls, shout louder
Lettin' them know we're gonna stand our ground
Lift your hands higher and wave 'em proud
Take a deep breath and say it loud
Never can, never will
Can't hold us down

Nobody can hold us down...
Never can, never will...

So-What am I not supposed to say what I'm saying
Are you offended with the message I'm bringin'
Call me whatever 'cause your words don't mean a thing
Guess you ain't even a man enough to handle what I sing
If you look back in history it's a common double standard of society
The guy gets all the glory the more he can score
While the girl can do the same and yet you call her a whore
I don't understand why it's OK,
The guy can get away with it the girl gets named
All my ladies come together and make a change
Start a new beginning for us, everybody sang

This is for my girls all around the world
Who have come across a man who don't respect your worth
Thinking all women should be seen not heard
What do we do girls, shout louder
Lettin' them know we're gonna stand our ground
Lift your hands high and wave 'em proud
Take a deep breath and say it loud
Never can, never will, can't hold us down

Lil' Kim:
Check it - Here's something I just can't understand
If the guy have three girls then he's the man
He can either give us some head, sex galore
If the girl do the same, then she's a whore
But the table's about to turn
I'll bet my fame on it
Cats take my ideas and put their name on it
It's aiight though, you can't hold me down
I got to keep on movin'
To all my girls with a man who be tryin to mack
Do it right back to him and let that be that
You need to let him know that his game is whack
And Lil' Kim and Christina Aguilera got your back

You're just a little boy
Think you're so cute, so coy
You must talk so big to make up for smaller things
So you're just a little boy
All you'll do is annoy
You must talk so big to make up for smaller things

Repeat Chorus x2

I really love this song by Christina. It proves to women that they can and should be strong, stand up for what they believe in. I really love the part where little Kim comments about men and the double standard women are held to when it comes to sexual activity. It talks about standing proud and shouting loud, and making it known that women have a voice too and that that voice needs to be and should be heard no matter what, and that you should not be with a man who does not appreciate that or you for that matter. It is a really great song about respect. This to me is a pop song with a little bit of rap done by lil Kim.

bad lyrics

[Eminem]
Ugh.. yo yo yo, yo

[Chorus: Eminem]
I been so many places, I've seen so many faces
But nothing compares to these blue and yellow purple hills
I've climbed the highest mountain, once or twice but who's countin
But nothing compares to these blue and yellow purple hills

[Eminem]
Yo, yo
Cool, calm, just like my mom
With a couple of lawsuits inside her palm
It's Mr. Mischief with a trick up his sleeve
To roll up on you like Christopher Reeves
I can't describe the vibe I get
When I drive by six people and five I hit (oops)
Aww [shit], I started a mosh pit
Squashed a chick and lost her foster kids (ahh!)
This room make me hallucinate
Then I sweat 'til I start losin weight
'Til I see dumb [shit] start happenin
Dumber than Vanilla Ice tryin to rap again
So bounce, bounce, come on bounce
{*GUNFIRE*} I said come on, bounce (ahh!)
Everybody in the house doin mass amounts (me!)
To the women in the thongs with they asses out (oh)
We don't bull[shit], better ask around
D-12 throws the bombest bash in town
Bizarre, your mom is crashin out
Help me get her on the couch 'fore she passes out
Come on!

[Kon Artis and Kuniva]
[Fuck] that, someone help Denaun
He's upstairs wrestlin Elton John
Heh, hey Von you see me steppin on these leprechauns?
It gotta be Tums, the Exlaxe is gone
Ya I took them all dawg with some parmesan
And I think my arm is gone
Naw it's probably numb
Young, dumb, and full of [cum]
And I think he 'bout to swallow his tongue
Scary ass it was a false alarm
You think I'm 'bout to die when I just got on?

Well theres Pepto and Tums -- watch out, here it comes! {*laughter*}

[Chorus]

[Eminem]
Dirty Dozen, eighty of us, Shady brothers, ladies love us
That's why our baby mothers love us but they hate each other
They probably wanna take each other out and date each other
Some-, somethin, some'un, some'un, some'un {*babbling*}

[Proof]
Hop hills, hills I hop
Hop two hills on stilts I walk
Snort two lines that were filled with chalk
Thought it was +Incredible+ and killed the +Hulk+
I wanna, roll away like a rollerblade
Until my eyes fall back and I'm scared for days
And when I'm, over weight and my golf ball broke
No okey-doke, I'm packin my nose with soap
{*cough cough cough*} Am I supposed to choke?
Had an accident when the Trojan broke
Ahh, poor baby, born by [whore] lady
Now I'm payin child support.. (it's your baby!)

[Swifty McVay]
I take fo' shots at one time
And I don't need no chicks when I'm swallowin mine
(Hey, you got any room?) In Bizarre's hash back?
And we can't go far cause our car has flats
Why the hell you people think I rap?
Because my mother taught me how to reach contracts
And if you got catch, then hide it soon
(Swift, chill) I'm just tryin to get bi like you! (eww!)
And I don't give a damn if they any room (uh-huh)
Mean, crude, the hell with you two (uh-huh)
I only need three blunts and I'm cool
I just copped some and I'm goin back soon

[Chorus]

[Bizarre]
I'm at rave lookin at babe, like she want it
Gin and tonic demonic, body smell like vomit
Looney crazy, chubby sexy, dope-headed guy
Whip cream, dirty mattresses, wanna try? (c'mon)
Blue hills, golden seals, got Bizarre, actin ill
Drugs kill (yeah right) - chick, I'm for real!
Shut your mouth you dirty girl, you know you want me in your world
Ladies please don't fight; Bizarre's here on ice!

[Chorus]

[Eminem]
Dirty Dozen, eighty of us, Shady brothers, ladies love us
That's why our baby mothers love us but they hate each other
They probably wanna take each other out and date each other
Some-, somethin, some'un, some'un, some'un {*babbling*}

{*harmonica plays until fade*}

This song refers to women as their baby mothers only, not as someone they love or cherish but just basically someone they had sex with and haven't taken responsibility for other then child support. This song also continues to reference being on drugs. this son is so degrading to women, they all hate each other, but love these men who have no respect for them? All the women in thongs with their butts hanging out should come out with them. So this song says to me you should do drugs get a man who doesn't respect you, you will end up getting pregnant and hate all the other women in your life and the babies father will talk trash about you and move on to the next women who has no disrespect. I don't understand why people honestly sing about this.

Jewel and Buck Cherry

Comparison of Buck Cherry's Crazy B**** and Jewel's Stronger Woman. For those that are faint of heart, be warned that explicit lyrics lie ahead. Please read on...

Crazy B**** - Buck Cherry

Break me down,
you got a lovely face,
we're going to your place
now you got to freak me out
Scream so loud,
getting f***ing laid,
you want me to stay
but I got to make my way

2x Chorus:
Hey! You’re a crazy b****,
but you f*** so good I'm on top of it.
When I dream I'm doing you all night,
Scratches all down my back to keep me right on.

(Verse)
Take it off,
the paper is your game,
jump in bed with fame another one night paid in full
You’re so fine,
It won’t be a loss,
cashing in the rocks just to get you face to face.

2x(Chorus)

(bridge)
Get the video, f*** you so good
Get the video, f*** you so good
Crazy B****,
Crazy B****,
Crazy...
B****

2x Chorus:
Hey! You’re a crazy b****,
but you f*** so good I'm on top of it.
When I dream I'm doing you all night,
Scratches all down my back to keep me right on.

(verse)
Baby girl, you want it all to be a star you’ll have to go down.
Take it off, no need to talk
You're crazy, but I love the way you f*** me.

2x(Chorus)
You keep me right on
You're crazy, but I love the way you f*** me.

This rock song by Buck Cherry came out quite recently with a great response from listeners. However, the great rock beat of the song may overshadow for a lot of people the actual lyrics and what is happening in the song. I admit I have found myself tapping my toe to the beat, but always am disappointed in myself when I think about the lyrical implications of the song. The woman described here valued only for her sexual abilities. She is just a body and her mental capacity, even if crazy, is insignificant to the fact that she performs well in the bedroom. He doesn’t want her to talk, just to satisfy him sexually. She is also referred to as getting paid for this, referring to the woman as a prostititute. This song is a prime example of the sexual objectification of women. The song is written for a rock audience (“sex, drugs, and rock and roll”) and was written by men for a male audience. Thus, a male bonding experience is happening through the objectification of the female body (which, admittedly is definitely not a new occurrence).

Jewel – Stronger Woman
I guess you could say
I'm one of those girls
thats always been with one of those guys
you know the type
like right now
he sleeps while I write

it's better than crying
i'm warn out from trying
from loving a man who always makes it clear
I'm not welcome here
Just when he's hungry or horny or needs something cleaned
you know what I mean
But not tonight
Cause come the morning light

I'm gonna love myself
More than anyone else
Believe in me
Even if someone can't see
The stronger woman in me

I'm gonna be my own best friend
Stick with me till the end
Won't lose myself again
never, no
Cause theres a stronger woman
a stronger woman in me

the light bulbs buzz I get up
head to my drawer
wish there was more
I could say
another fairy tale fades to grey

I've lived on hope
like a child
walking that mile
faking that smile
all the while
wishing my heart had wings
well from now on I'm gonna be
The kind of woman I want my daughter to be, oh

I'm gonna love myself
More than anyone else
Believe in me
Even if someone can't see
a stronger woman in me
I'm gonna be my own best friend,
Stick with me till the end
Won't lose myself again
Never, no
Cause there's a stronger woman, stronger woman

this is me, packing up my bags
this is me, headed for the door
this is me, the best you ever had

I'm gonna love myself
More than anyone else
Believe in me, even if someone can't see
The stonger woman in me

I'm gonna be my own best friend
stick with me till the end
Won't lose myself again
no no
Cause there's a stronger woman, a stronger woman
Theres a stronger woman in me, a stronger woman in me
stronger woman in me

This song by Jewel is a much more positive representation of women. It is written by a woman, the singer herself, and directed toward a lite-rock, adult contemporary genre of listeners. This song is actually a great response to those that would place the woman as only being desired by men when they want their needs met (hungry or horny or needs something cleaned - i.e. Buck Cherry). The woman in the song desides that merely serving a man’s needs is not what she wants for herself or for her daughter. Ultimately it is her daughter that provides her with the strenghth to say no to the situation so that her life will be an inspiration for her girl. Since this is not a situation she would ever want her daughter to endure she has to be an example for the girl on how to remove herself from these belittling situations. It is not a selfish idea that the woman is promoting, to “love myself more than anyone else” but the truth that one cannot constantly be subverting their own needs in order to meet another’s. There has to be an equality and reciprocity is such in a relationship. Jewel’s song creates a brave female character that is willing to stand up for herself.

"Tricks" vs. "Sistas"

Ok so I thought I go with rap because there are so little examples of positive portrayals of women and soooo many examples of negative ones. So here’s an all too common example of extremely negative portrayal of women as “hoes” and ”tricks” and “sluts.” Here’s a gem from Dr. Dre with the wonderfully titled, “Bitches Ain’t Shit” :

Bitches ain't shit but hoes and tricks
Lick on deez nutz and suck the dick
Get's the f**k out after you're done
And I hops in my ride to make a quick run...
...To the store, to get me a 4-0
Snoop Doggy Dogg paged, that must mean more hoes
So I head down the street to long beach
Just so i could meet, a freak
To lick me from my head to my feet
And I'm here, now I'm ready to be done up
Nothin' but homies around so I puts my gun up
Bitches on my nuts like clothes
But i'm from the pound and we don't love them hoes
How could you trust a hoe? Why?
'cause a hoe's a trick
We don't love them tricks Why?
'cause a trick's a bitch
And my dick's constantly in her mouth
And turnin' them trick ass hoes the f**k out

I only included about half the song because it only gets painfully worse as it goes on. Not only degrading, just plain bad.

Now, here’s Tupac with a rare song from that era of rap—good lyrics, positive message, positive view of women—all around good song, entitled “Keep Your Head Up” :

Some say the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice
I say the darker the flesh then the deeper the roots
I give a holler to my sisters on welfare
Tupac cares, if don't nobody else care

Keep ya head up, oooo child things are gonna get easier
ooooo child things are gonna get brighter [2x]

Unbeknownst to me when I picked these two songs, they were actually made in the same year—1993. I am in no way a hip hop connoisseur, nor was I even a functioning adult when these songs came out, but from my limited experience with hip hop, I am going to surmise that, unfortunately, the style shown by the Dr. Dre song was much more prevalent at the time than the uplifting words from Tupac. I would say that even for Tupac, this song is a bit of an exception. His raps were never as degrading as Dre’s, but not always as respectful towards women as this song is. Both songs are rapped by African-American men who were about the same age, and both who were famous rappers at the time of release. The fact that both artists are men has everything to do with the words they say. Tupac is trying to bring women up, speaking about them as different from himself, and thus in need of assistance, whereas Dre is degrading women and their insignificant role in his life. Musicians and rappers have a huge opportunity to positively impact the millions that listen to their music. Tupac is using his fame well in this song (kudos) and Dre is failing horribly (yuck.)

Positive Song v. Negative Song

Positive Song:
TLC- Unpretty

Okay so I am a TLC fan. This song, "Unpretty" was released a long time ago and I remember how it really touched me. It deals with the story of a woman who is letting the man in her life dictate what her body should look like. In the video, this woman is considering breast implants because the man who "loves" her finds her breast size inadequate. There's another woman who is binge eating and then starving herself to fit into the ideal beauty image presented in the magazines. I feel this song is trying to send the message that it is okay to look the way you were made, and that you do not need alterations, regardless if it is the media telling you that you do or your loved ones.

Negative Song:
Buckcherry- Crazy Bitch

When I began to think of a negative song, tons of commercial rap songs came to mind, but since many of those are so disrespectful to women as a given, I thought I'd make it a little harder on myself. I was so shocked when I first heard this song. I was not expecting these lyrics, because it was actually recommended to me by a woman who considers herself a feminist and she was rocking out to it. Whatever floats your boat, I know that I listen to some music that is misogynistic in nature, and none of us are perfect. However, I was really shocked by this song because I was not expecting that language. It just completely exploits women sexually, and then proceeds to degrade them by calling them "bitches". I expect this from a Nelly but wasn't really expecting it from commercial rock. I think hearing this song confirmed my belief that all genres of music exploit women; some are just pushed into the limelight for critique more often than others.

Images of Women

So before I get into my analysis of my image, I liked to point out something that shocked me during my search. I went to Yahoo and started to search "Black...." and the first thing that popped up was Blackplanet, a site kind of like facebook but that primarily caters to the African-American community. The second was "black big bootty". I knew that the images I would find from this point on would not be very pleasing to me as a feminist; and they weren't. The oversexualization of bodies of color, and especially Black bodies has been a historical problem in America. However, after encountering so much negativity, I decided to pick an image that I actually thought was beautiful and told a better story about bodies of color.

View Image

I thought this picture was so beautiful. Especially in comparison to the many pictures of negative body images I came across during my search. It immediately made me think of the boxes of beauty that women are placed in in America, and how there really isn't a place for in mainstream America for beauty such as this picture except to be described as "exotic" and "different". I think if more positive images of women of color were introduced to mainstream America that maybe then a difference could be made about some of the confining definitions of beauty in America. Presenting different definitions of beauty and letting young girls know it is okay to be and look different and that different can also be beautiful is an important message to send out, and maybe pictures like this are a small step in the right direction.

Good vs. Bad

BLACK SABBATH LYRICS

"Dirty Women"

The neon lights are shining on me again
I walk the lonely streets in search of a friend
I need a lady to help me to get through the night, through the night
If I could find one then everything would be alright

The sleepy city is dreaming the night time away
Out on the street I watch tomorrow becoming today
I see a man, he's got take away women for sale, yes for sale
Guess that's the answer, 'cause take away women don't fail

Oh dirty women, they don't mess around
Oh dirty women, they don't mess around
You've got me coming, You've got me going around
Oh dirty women, they don't mess around

Walking the streets I wonder will it ever happen
Gotta be good 'cause then everything will be OK
If I could score tonight then I will end up happy

A woman for sale is gonna help me save my day...

The Beatles-She’s a Woman

My love don't give me presents
I know that she's no peasant
Only ever has to give me
Love forever and forever
My love don't give me presents
Turn me on when I get lonely
People tell me that she's only
Fooling, I know she isn't

She don't give the boys the eye
She hates to see me cry
She is happy just to hear me say
That I will never leave her
She don't give the boys the eye
She will never make me jealous
Gives me all her time as well as
Loving, don't ask me why

She's a woman who understands
She's a woman who loves her man

My love don't give me presents
I know that she's no peasant
Only ever has to give me love
Forever and forever
My love don't give me presents
Turn me on when I get lonely
People tell me that she's only
Fooling, I know she isn't

She's a woman who understands
She's a woman who loves her man

My love don't give me presents
I know that she's no peasant
Only ever has to give me
Love forever and forever
My love don't give me presents
Turn me on when I get lonely
People tell me that she's only
Fooling, I know she isn't

She's a woman, she's a woman
She's a woman, she's a woman

The bad song is called “Dirty Women” by Black Sabbath. This is a rock song. Black Sabbath is a rock-n-roll band that was very popular back in the sixties and seventies with lead singer Ozzy Osbourne. Many people know of Ozzy for his very crazy ways and behavior. The band is also known for their dark look. Everything is black and there are lyrics about demons and death. This particular song talks about how women are prostitutes that can fix men's problems for the night and how women are for sale.

The good song is from The Beatles which was a group of four guys from Liverpool who sang pop-rock. The Beatles have a lot of happy and sad songs that talk about love and life. I like this particular song because they are talking about a woman who loves her man and who doesn’t have to prove her love with gifts.

Negative song Vs Positive song

NEGATIVE SONG
Bojangles by Pitbull

If you don't know her name it's cool
call her this:
Jiggy jiggy, call that girl bojangles.
Jiggy jiggy, call that girl bojangles.
Jiggy jiggy, call that girl bojangles.
The following is not a test, DJ!

[CHORUS]
Bring it bring it back,
Bring it bring it bring it back,
Bring it bring it back,
Bring it bring it bring it back,
Bring it bring it back,
Bring it bring it bring it back,
The following is not a test, DJ!
[Repeat once in Spanish]

I see the way you move
and I picture you nude
baby keep movin' that thing
baby keep movin' that thing
I wanna take you to the room, room, room
So we can do it like boom, boom, boom, boom.
Pleasure, yes, God bless,
I love my women rated triple-X.
Let me show you how we do it 'round here,
man the women they don't fake it
they get naked down here.
It's da bottom, no bras no drawers.
Da bottom, where they holla: "TAKE IT OFF!"
Da bottom, where we turn out daughters
just to plan a lick on the father, we got'em

Licky licky, licky licky, I like to
licky licky, licky licky, we like to
licky licky, licky licky, they like to
licky licky, licky licky, DJ!!

[CHORUS]

I'm back for some more,
jiggy, jiggy, jiggy.
Take it back to the floor,
jiggy, jiggy, jiggy.
Bend over touch your toes,
jiggy, jiggy, jiggy.
That's right she's a pro.
That's right I'm a pro.
Take it to, take it to the house
party, I'm a take it, I'm a take it to her mouth,
boy I'm a take'em, I'm a take'em to the south,
where them school's got classes like
Jay-Z's reasonable doubt.
Pit is always reppin' for them boyz up the road,
for them boyz on the block yellin' "we base blow?"
Watch where ya at 'cause they will tag ya toe.
Liberty city'll leave yo ass John Doe.

Licky licky, licky licky, I like to
licky licky, licky licky, we like to
licky licky, licky licky, they like to
licky licky, licky licky, DJ!!

[CHORUS]

Baby work it out, baby baby work it out.
Baby work it out, baby baby work it out.
Baby work it out, baby baby work it out.

If you see a girl that can shake,
tell her just like this:

Baby take it down, baby baby take it down.
Baby take it down, baby baby take it down.
Baby take it down, baby baby take it down.

If you see a girl that can shake,
tell her just like this:

Baby turn around, baby baby turn around.
Baby turn around, baby baby turn around.
Baby turn around, baby baby turn around.

Girl you know what I like to do,
I like to
Licky licky, licky licky, I like to

POSITIVE SONG
I am not my hair by Indie Arie

Spoken)
Is that India? What happened to her hair?

Da da da da da

(Verse 1)
Little girl with the press and curls
Age 8 I got a jerry curl
13 and I got a relaxer
I was the source of so much laughter
15 when it all broke off
18 when I went all natural
February 2002
I went on and did what I had to do

Cuz it was time to change my life
To become the woman that I am inside
97 dread locs all grown
I looked in the mirror for the first time and saw that (hey)

(Chorus)
I am not my hair
I am not this skin
I am not your expectations (no)
I am not my hair
I am not this skin
I am the soul that lives within

(Spoken)
What she do to her?
I don’t know; it look crazy!
I like it.
I might do that.
I wouldn’t go that far.

(Verse 2)
Good hair means curls and waves.
Bad hair means you look like a slave
At the turn of the century
Its time for us to redefine who we be
You can shave it off like an African beauty
Got in on “loc” like Bob Marley
You can rock it straight like Oprah Winfrey
It’s not what’s on your head, it’s what’s underneath (say hey)

(Chorus)
I am not my hair
I am not this skin
I am not your expectations (no)
I am not my hair
I am not this skin
I am the soul that lives within

Does the way I wear my hair make me a better person
Does the way I wear my hair make me a better friend
Does the way I wear my hair determine my integrity
Expressing my creativity

(Verse 3)
Breast cancer and chemotherapy
Took away her crown and glory
She promised God if she was to survive
She would enjoy everyday of her life
On national television her diamond eyes are sparkling
Baldheaded like a full moon shining
Singing out to the whole wide world like hey

(Chorus)
I am not my hair
I am not this skin
I am not your expectations (no)
I am not my hair
I am not this skin
I am the soul that lives within
(Repeat)

If I wanna shave it close or I wanna rock locs
That don’t take a bit away from this soul that I got

If I wanna wear it braided all down my back
I don’t see nothing wrong with that

I chose Pitbull’s Bojangles because it starts off talking about a woman and if you don’t know her name feel free to call her Bojangles. Bojangles means a woman with a large chest, nice legs and nice arms, which isn’t necessarily bad but is when they do not take the time to learn your name and call you some general term such as “Boo”, “Shorty” or in this case “Bojangles”. All of this is just within the first five lines of the song then it proceeds to get the woman naked and the song explains the rest.

For my positive song I chose India Arie’s I am not my hair. I like this song because it talks about one thing women will continually obsess about, their hair. I am certain there are many of us that are put into a sour mood because our hair is not doing what we want it to do. India puts it all in simple terms, I am not my hair. Many of us fret over it but what about those women who have no choice even if they want to keep their hair or not. The women who go through chemotherapy have no say in losing their hair it just happens in attempts to get better. So what if a bald woman is next to a woman with hair? Is one woman better than the other? Of course not and if anyone thinks that they are in need of some feminist teaching. In short, it is not what my hair looks like but it is the person and soul inside that counts.

Positive and Negative Songs

Loretta Lynn- The Pill
You wined me and dined me

When I was your girl

Promised if I'd be your wife

You'd show me the world

But all I've seen of this old world

Is a bed and a doctor bill

I'm tearin' down your brooder house

'Cause now I've got the pill

All these years I've stayed at home

While you had all your fun

And every year thats gone by

Another babys come

There's a gonna be some changes made

Right here on nursery hill

You've set this chicken your last time

'Cause now I've got the pill

This old maternity dress
I've got
Is goin' in the garbage

The clothes I'm wearin' from now on

Won't take up so much yardage

Miniskirts, hot pants and a few little fancy frills

Yeah I'm makin' up for all those years

Since I've got the pill

I'm tired of all your crowin'

How you and your hens play

While holdin' a couple in my arms

Another's on the way

This chicken's done tore up her nest

And I'm ready to make a deal

And ya can't afford to turn it down

'Cause you know I've got the pill

This incubator is overused

Because you've kept it filled

The feelin' good comes easy now

Since I've got the pill

It's gettin' dark it's roostin' time

Tonight's too good to be real

Oh but daddy don't you worry none

'Cause mama's got the pill

Oh daddy don't you worry none

'Cause mama's got the pill

BuckCherry-

Crazy Bitch

All right!

Break me down, you got a lovely face

We're going to your place

And now you got to freak me out

Scream so loud, getting fuckin' laid

You want me to stay, but I got to make my way

Hey
 You're a crazy bitch

But you fuck so good, I'm on top of it

When I dream, I'm doing you all night

Scratches all down my back to keep me right on

Hey
You're a crazy bitch

But you fuck so good, I'm on top of it

When I dream, I'm doing you all night

Scratches all down my back to keep me right on

Take it off, the paper is your game

You jump in bed with fame

Another one night paid in full, uh

You're so fine, it won't be a loss

Cashing in the rocks, just to get you face to face

Get the video

Fuck you so good

Get the video

Fuck you so good

Crazy bitch

Crazy bitch

Crazy...bitch

Hey
You're a crazy bitch

But you fuck so good, I'm on top of it

When I dream, I'm doing you all night

Scratches all down my back to keep me right on

Hey
You're a crazy bitch

But you fuck so good, I'm on top of it

When I dream, I'm doing you all night

Scratches all down my back, come on

Baby girl

You want it all

To be a star

You'll have to go down

Take it off

No need to talk

You're crazy

But I like the way you fuck me

You keep me right on

You're crazy

But I like the way you fuck me

The first song is called “The Pill” by prominent country artist Loretta Lynn. I had never heard the song before this assignment, nor do I ever listen to country music, but I found the lyrics really interesting. I think it’s really empowering that a woman is speaking up and taking control over her sexuality. She speaks out against the injustice of not being able to make your own choices about your body. I also like that she doesn’t totally dismiss the motherly role a woman can have, but she is saying she is more than a babymaker. She is asserting that birth control has now allowed her to be as free as she feels her man has been. Unfortunately, when you listen to the actual song, it seems less powerful because its very light-hearted country.

The second song is “Crazy Bitch” by the male rock band BuckCherry. I remember hearing this song a lot and always thinking it was catchy and kind of fun. However, this assignment was the first time I had actually read all the lyrics. I now think it is pretty negative towards women, and the fact that it’s catchy is even worse. The song repeatedly calls the woman a “crazy bitch” and reduces her entire worth to sex. Each time it talks about any intellectual or personality traits of the woman, he then contradicts it by saying the only thing she is good at is sex. Also, unlike the Loretta Lynn song, the melody is hard and aggressive. I definitely think that the gender of BuckCherry makes a big difference. I believe that the song would not have been as popular if it was a woman singing about a man. Actually, it would probably be considered controversial because of society holding onto gender roles.

Good song vs. Bad song

Good song: Limp by Fiona Apple-
You wanna make me sick;
You wanna lick my wounds,
Don't you, baby?
You want the badge of honor when you save my hide
But you're the one in the way
Of the day of doom, baby
If you need my shame to reclaim your pride
And when I think of it, my fingers turn to fists
I never did anything to you, man
But no matter what I try
You'll beat me with your bitter lies
So call me crazy, hold me down
Make me cry; get off now, baby-
It won't be long till you'll be
Lying limp in your own hand
You feed the beast I have within me
You wave the red flag, baby you make it run run run
Standing on the sidelines, waving and grinning
You fondle my trigger, then you blame my gun
And when I think of it, my fingers turn to fists
I never did anything to you, man
But no matter what I try
You'll beat me with your bitter lies
So call me crazy, hold me down
Make me cry; get off now, baby-
It won't be long till you'll be
Lying limp in your own hand

Bad Song: Barbie Girl by Aqua-
Hi barbie
Hi ken
Do you wanna go for a ride?
Sure ken..
Jump in....
I'm a barbie girl, in a barbie world
Life in plastic, it's fantastic..
You can brush my hair, undress me everywhere..
Imagination, life is your creation..
Come on barbie, let's go party!
I'm a barbie girl, in a barbie world
Life in plastic, it's fantastic..
You can brush my hair, undress me everywhere..
Imagination, life is your creation..
I'm a blond bimbo girl, in a fantasy world,
Dress me up, make it tight, i'm your dolly..
You're my doll, rock'n'roll, feel the glamour in pink,
Kiss me here, touch me there, hanky panky..
You can touch, you can play, if you say: "i'm always yours"
(uu-oooh-u)
I'm a barbie girl, in a barbie world
Life in plastic, it's fantastic..
You can brush my hair, undress me everywhere..
Imagination, life is your creation..
Come on barbie, let's go party!
(ah-ah-ah-yeah)
Come on barbie, let's go party!
(uu-oooh-u)
Come on barbie, let's go party!
(ah-ah-ah-yeah)
Come on barbie, let's go party!
(uu-oooh-u)
Make me walk, make me talk, do whatever you please,
I can act like a star, i can beg on my knees..
Come jump in, bimbo friend, let us do it again,
Hit the town, fool around, let's go party
You can touch, you can play, if you say: "i'm always yours"
You can touch, you can play, if you say: "i'm always yours"
Come on barbie, let's go party!
(ah-ah-ah-yeah)
Come on barbie, let's go party!
(uu-oooh-u)
Come on barbie, let's go party!
(ah-ah-ah-yeah)
Come on barbie, let's go party!
(uu-oooh-u)
¡¡
I'm a barbie girl, in a barbie world
Life in plastic, it's fantastic..
You can brush my hair, undress me everywhere..
Imagination, life is your creation..
I'm a barbie girl, in a barbie world
Life in plastic, it's fantastic..
You can brush my hair, undress me everywhere..
Imagination, life is your creation..

(uu-oooh-u)
Come on barbie, let's go party!

Come on barbie, let's go party!
(uu-oooh-u)
Oh, i'm having so much fun!
Well barbie, we're just getting started..
Oh, i love you ken..

Its interesting contrasting two songs where they are basically writing about the same things but with different metaphors and reactions. Both songs are about abuse toward women, although “Barbie Girl” is clearly about a Barbie and they are supposed to be dressed up and played with this songs seems to be more comparing Barbie to actually women. This is done by personifying her. So the main difference between these tow songs is that in Fiona Apple’s “Limp” she is angry about this abuse put on her and in Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” she is very happy to be a man’s play toy. Another difference is that “Barbie Girl” is a more well known song and “Limp” isn’t. So, the majority of people are hearing about women being turned into objects rather than the pain that is caused when they are treated as such. It seems to me that this happens a lot. To get into mainstream music an artist can’t be perceived as a feminist; she needs to be being singing about having fun, always ready to party, and be okay with being sexualized. This is a problem with our society today. Although, I do in fact kind of like “Barbie Girl”, it’s a catchy tune, but I think it would have been as good or better had Barbie been singing about something other than being a sex object, literally, like all the careers she has had in her lifetime. Fiona Apple’s message is also much better for girl’s empowerment in today’s society, where it isn’t always so easy to feel empowered.

Song Lyrics

Joanna Pacitti--"Watch Me Shine" (the good)

Ooh.. I'm not
You average type Of girl
I'm gonna show the world the strength in me
That sometimes they can't see
I'm about to switch my style
And soon things may get wild
But I will prove I can conquer anything
So from my head to toe I'm taking full control
I'll make it on my own
This time
(Better watch me shine)

CHORUS:
Better watch out
Going for the knockout
And I won't stop
Till I'm on top now
Not gonna give up
Until I get what's mine
Better check that I'm about to upset
And I'm hot now
So you better step back
I'm taking over
So watch me shine

So Get ready
Here I come
Until the job is done
No time to waste
There's nothing stopping me
Oh
But you don't hear me though
So now it's time to show
I'll prove I'm gonna be the best I can be
So from my head to toe
My mind body and soul
I'm taking full control
This time

CHORUS:
Better watch out
Going for the knockout
And I won't stop
Till I'm on top now
Not gonna give up
Until I get what's mine
Better check that I'm about to upset
And I'm hot now
So you better step back
I'm taking over
So watch me shine

BRIDGE:
Bet you don't think I can take it
But my mind and body are strong
Bet you don't think I can make it
It won't take long
Bet you don't think I can take it
But my mind and body are strong
Bet you don't think I can make it
It won't take long
Now watch me shine...

CHORUS:
Better watch out
Going for the knockout
And I won't stop
Till I'm on top now
Not gonna give up
Until I get what's mine
Better check that I'm about to upset
And I'm hot now
So you better step back
I'm taking over
So watch me shine
Now watch me shine...

CHORUS:
Better watch out
Going for the knockout
And I won't stop
Till I'm on top now
Not gonna give up
Until I get what's mine
(Until I get what's mine...)
Better check that I'm about to upset
And I'm hot now
So you better step back
I'm taking over
So watch me shine
Watch me...
Watch me shine...
Watch me

Petey Pablo feat. Rasheeda--"Vibrate" (the bad)

C'mon
Yeah Yeah Yeah
Make that ass vibrate, make that ass vibrate
Make that ass vibrate, shake that shit till you
Start an earthquake

[Verse 1: Petey]
I want them 3, to come up here wit me
So I can put em where they 'pose to be
One at the head, one in the middle
and one down by my feet, she keep ticklin me
Neighbors bangin on the wall cause we over here
disturbin the peace, baby be easy
Rockin the bed so hard we done kicked off
all tha sheets, don't worry we don't need em
A couple hours in the session we done been
through bout four CDs (about four CDs)
Keith Sweat, Mary J, Brian McKnight, and Jodeci
(They love Jodeci)
By the way look think I need a couple can of energy drinks
(yeah I'm gone need em)
Cuz these hoes go vibratin in they coochie

[Chorus 1: 2x]
I like the way yo ass be vibratin...
I like the way yo ass be vibratin...

[Chorus 2: 2x]
Make that ass vibrate, make that ass vibrate
Make that ass vibrate, shake that shit till you
Start an earthquake

[Verse 2: Rasheeda]
Bend over and touch ya toes, blow smoke got ya hoes like you blowin dro
Slide down the pole, upside down do it fast or slow
Round here we professionals, get flexible, real sexual
Make a nigga wanna eat it like a vegetable
When he see that ass rise like a buttered roll
Round here we gangstered out, this aint no titty bar
we let it all hang out
Break bread till the song played out, show that nigga what a real bitch bout
These cats thank they pimpin like Don Juon
But they all played out like the thong song
Get ya money gul, show em what you really bout
Rasheeda reppin fo the ladies in the south

[Both Choruses]

[Verse 3: Petey]
I can fuck, any bitch in here, lay her on the pillow
Crawl up behind her and cram all of it in her
Ride her ass like a bicycle, hold right there
When I move you move, just like that
Just as show as yo ass is fat, there's some 26 inch rims on a Cadillac
Like spinners, sittin on a sixty-seven
At the car show bumpin Funk Master Flex
I aint met a bitch yet (and yeah) that I couldn't have
All I gotta do is tell a hoe who I am
Pull up to the side and get away from them
Doom, Doom, Doom

“Watch Me Shine” is definitely a pop song, while “Vibrate” is rap. “Watch Me Shine” is from Legally Blonde (and also from Cadet Kelly, if any of you have seen it), and though I have many issues with Legally Blonde, I do respect the overall message of powerful women being capable of anything they set their minds to. The song fits perfectly into the movie; the lyrics are all about how even if you can’t see the strength in a person, it’s there and at any moment they can prove to you just how powerful they are. I found this especially compelling as many people frequently underestimate what women are capable of, and this song emphasizes the fact that we’re in control and are about to take over what is rightfully ours. The artist is female, so that obviously plays an important role in her pro-female, feminist, girl power stance in the song. One thing that really disturbs me about the song “Vibrate” is that, though it is a male artist singing the song, it features a female. The entire song objectifies women as sex objects and describes all the things a man would do to the women in his life as though they are just there as playthings and/or obedient little puppies that will do whatever he tells them to. I think it’s sad that there is a woman artist out there that would put her voice and name toward a song that would speak of women in such a manner. I never really listened to music like this before, but I went on a road trip with my big brother over spring break and this is the majority of what he listens to (trust me, this was one of the better songs…).

Blog 4: Songs

Good Song: Something-The Beatles
Something in the way she moves
Attracts me like no other lover
Something in the way she woos me

I don't want to leave her now
You know I believe her now

Somewhere in her smile she knows
That I don't need no other lover
Something in her style that shows me

Don't want to leave her now
You know I believe her now

You're asking me will my love grow
I don't know, I don't know
You stick around now it may show
I don't know, I don't know

Something in the way she knows
And all I have to do is think of her
Something in the things she shows me

Don't want to leave her now
You know I believe her now
