I learnt a lot from this class

I learnt a lot from this class. Not just the people I met but also the course material. I am male and it gave me a different perspective on things. I am also taking another class called black women writers and this is a good complement for my pop culture. It is about black women who express themselves on issues like race and gender. I loved the movies we watch. I saw movies and t.v shows in class and gave me a different view on that. I have a new sense of respect for women. The articles we read were very educative and insighting. I am very appreciative and thankful to have been involved in it.

Blog #8

I learned a lot in this class. I guess it really opened my eyes to how much the media is really targeting girls at a much younger age. It is a huge consumer culture when it comes to targeting these young girls. The first time I watched an episode of Zoey 101 was in this class. I had always heard about it because I have a two year old niece whose name is Zoee as well and she absolutely loves the show. She thinks that she is Zoey on TV. When I watched the episode in class, it really made me realize that my little niece is internalizing all of these images and messages. It is not the worst show in the world, but it shows some very stereotypical and gendered images. I want my niece to be aware that what she sees on TV is not reality. This class really made me realize how critically we have to look at everything that surrounds us.

I will take alot of things away from this class. First, i realize now that feminists aren't just man hating women. There is a lot more to being a feminist that has nothing to do with man hating. Overall it has to do with being created equal between the two sexes. I also learned how to appy the terms from the readings to things that i expierence in everyday life. The movies and television shows that we watched in class helped put the readings and discussions into perspective to make the texts easier to understand.

BLOG POST 8!

If there was one thing I am going to take away from GWSS3306 it would definitely be the term feminist. I always thought that meant something bad, like a stuck up bitchy woman who was all about girls, girls this girls that, girls for everything and nothing else, you get the idea. Now I get that it is more of a way of thinking positive, like ya I can do that, or sure let a me help you with that (coming from a girl). The class really broaden my horizons I guess. Being the one of the only guys in the class also gave me a chance to see how girls interact with one another, sometimes kinda scary, put a bunch of dudes in a class and I don’t think it would get that carried away regarding opinions and subjects. Nothing wrong with that I just think its funny, which is why I just stay hush and no one notices me. Overall the class is great, teacher provides relaxed atmosphere and is cool!, I would take it again if I failed, but iam getting an A! YIPPY!

Motherhood- Blog 6

In television today mothers are seen to have the housewife role. She is typically the one is shows to watches the children, cleans the home, does the dishes, and cooks. The man is usually the one that is the bread winner of the family and works while the wife is at home. The only time that you see the woman not being in the housewife role is when she is a single mother. Single mothers aren't very commonly shown on television today. Although, television doesn't show single mothers, it is becoming a increasingly popular situation these days but not necessarily by choice. I think that it is horrible that these show aren't showing other types of families where the woman is the bread winner. By not having women be in other roles some viewers can get an unrealistic view of what the mothers role should be.

Motherhood Portrayal

When I think of different motherhood portrayals, all I have to do is think of different forms of media. One example I would like to talk about would be the show, The Real Housewives of Orange County. I think that this show really shows a different type of mother. For one, all of the families that are on the show are very, very wealthy. They live in the best part of town and have absolutely anything they could ever want or need at their fingertips. Having money, they all want to look their best, which means paying for liposuction, injections, breast implants, botox, you name it. To me the portrayal of mothers that they are showing is absurd. These women are not your average women or mothers. All of the kids are pretty much spoiled rotten, which reflects back on their parenting. And when it comes to race, class, and sexuality, they are all Caucasian, straight or married and of a high class. Did I mention that most of them are blonde??

Mothers always seem to play similar roles on television. I think they are portrayed as fairly attractive women who play the typical housewife. They prepare food, keep the house clean, and occasionally shoots some advice to her kids. The mothers are often stay at home moms living in middle to upper class homes. Their husbands on television typically hold a well paying job that supports the family. In many scenes on television they are only seen doing things that typical housewives may do, like the dishes, laundry, or some other form of cleaning.
Mothers on television with a higher power that stare away from the norm play the role of the mother that everyone wishes they had, but in a sense is not a very good role model or whatever. They accept topics everyday mothers would not tolerate, like dating, sex, and even drugs. I think that in todays views on typical culture, the mother and the father hold equal power in the household in real life.
Mothers in real life situations creates the type of mother they need to be, on television these situations are brought out dramatically.

Joss Whedon Equality Now Speech

We are viewing Buffy the Vampire Slayer in class tonight and though I will be showing this clip I thought I would post it early. I don't think you can ever watch it to many times. Whedon makes a strong point about why he is asked why he creates such strong women characters and his response is why aren't we asking why others are not.
I appreciate that he recognizes his privilige as a man and that he is heard when other are not. Numerous others (i.e. women) have been challenging dominant constructs of woman as weak, sexism and misogyny in many aspets of our society. He creates a kickass female character and suddenly we see girlhood and womanhood in a new light. The irony of the situation is not lost on him.

Check out this site, Katti's Dolls in particular the section Miscellaneous, scroll down to dolls by name and look at Barbie's friends, her black and ethnic ones.
