S09: GWSS 3306 Pop Culture Women

I registered a little late for this class, and I didn't get to introduce myself. So, I'm doing it now.

My name is Amy Grosskreutz. How I ended up with a last name like that...I do not know. It will be changing to a more "normal" name on May 29th of this year (getting married). I was an English major until last week, which was when I found out I was literally in the wrong major. I was suppost to be in Writing Studies :) Appearently the U's writing program is different than my other college. This semester turned out to be a collage of random classes about things I am interested it, which is why I'm taking this course. Anyways, I'm in my jr year and transfered just this semester. Hopefully by next semester, I'll be a declared Writing studies major. I plan on using it for technical writing, but I'm also thinking of going to law school.

I moved from Fergus Falls, mn (about 3 hours away) this January. I don't really have a lot of out of class activies other than homework and trying to figure out new ways to stuff all my things into horribly small closets right now. I'm still trying to catch up from the week of classes I missed because of all my wrong major issue.

Hey everyone, my name is Kelsey Hood and I'm a senior here at the University of Minneasota. I am majoring in Sociology (Law, Crime, Deviance) and am planning on going into corrections for juvenile delinquents eventually. My life basically revolves around sports. I played soccer for the University and I am still training with the team this spring in hopes to continue my soccer career over seas. I took this course because it sounded interesting and one of my friends told me she really enjoyed the class. After the first class, I am confident I well throughly enjoy the class because, "Freeway" is one of my all time favorite movies!

My name is Sarah Mainz. I am a psychology major, and just recently switched from nutrition. I took this class because I needed some upper level courses outside of my major and this one caught my attention and sounded interesting. This is my senior year but only my second year at the UofM. I did my first two years at a community college in Rochester and then transferred here my junior year. I hated this school at first because it is so big and I had no friends and compared to the classes I was taking in Rochester this school was a lot harder. But no worries, the school grew on me and I did end up making friends :). I'm a television addict, probably another reason this course suited me. I watch One tree hill, Burn Notice, House, CSI:Miami/Las Vegas, Gossip Girl, 90210, and law and order habitually, and I love Grey's anatomy but I never seem to remember to watch it, but hey It'll be out on box set soon enough and then I can watch the show marathon style (my favorite). I have almost all the friends dvds, seasons 1-5 of Will and Grace, 1-4 of Greys anatomy, 3-4 of House (I plan to get more), just started collecting Dawson's creek, and I have 1-3 of the OC. lol so ya I watch a lot of TV. Otherwise I've been dating the same guy for a year now and I work as a waitress at the Cracker Barrel (the worst job ever).

Oh, my. I'm very unfamiliar with this format. I'm a Livejournal girl, myself. Much simpler...

Well. Introductions. I am Kate Wiest, and I'm a senior (I wrote freshman first for some reason...) in psychology. I have fifteen credits to go before I graduate, along with the major project in psych. Since I failed hard and accidentally registered for the wrong section of the project, I have to take it in summer instead. Boo. But the plus side is that it lets me take a full courseload this semester, meaning I get to (finally. FINALLY) take fifteen credits worth of whatever I want. (Holy crap that is not the HTML I know.) I'm a self-described feminist, as I daresay many of us probably are, and so the sort of themes I expect to encounter in this class are near and dear to me already. I'm not very up on my activism--yet--so I think in some strange way taking a GWSS course was a way of... well, I don't know. Feeling like a "good feminist," haha. But no, really, I'm here because I want to be, not because I feel like I should be. It sounds interesting and exciting. (The truth is, the day I got our main text for the class, I read it almost cover to cover. You can tell me I'm lame now.)

Yeah, boy. Giving me a forum to chatter on the internet? Are you ever in for a hefty dose of regret. (Are emoticons looked down upon, I wonder? They're such a reflex...)

Songs? Songs. I like this prompt. Have some songs. Chosen among many and in no particular order...

1.) "Refractions in the Plastic Pulse" -- Stereolab
I bought a crapload of Stereolab over break and I love them--loved them before I bought a crapload, even, but I'd never heard this song before. It's seventeen minutes long and it's just about the chillest thing ever. Good for the chillest days ever.
2.) "From Off to On" -- The Knife
This song is just gorgeous and very minimalist and haunting. I just like it and its lyrics a lot.
3.) "The Battle for Freedom" -- Final Fantasy XII OST
This is the final boss music from Final Fantasy XII. ...I like to listen to this as I'm walking to and from the bus and lose myself in daydreams about ancient warriors riding off to their victory or death. Don't laugh. Stop laughing.
4.) "Alice" -- Pogo
If this song exists outside the internet, I haven't seen or heard it. Anyway, it's just an amazing concept. Some guy took samples from the old Alice in Wonderland movie and made a song out of it. An awesome, magical techno-y song.
5.) "Start Wearing Purple" -- Gogol Bordello
If you listen to this song, it probably will not leave you for a while. Be warned. All your sanity and wits, they will all vanish. I promise. It's just a~ matter of time~

My name is Ami Schneider. I am 21 years old and am in my third year here at the U. I am majoring in Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies, Sociology: LCD, and Communications. After graduation I plan on taking one year off and then going to law school. Hello! My name is Danya. This is my second year at the U; I'm an art education major. Eventually I would like to be an elementary school art teacher. My schedule is mostly made up of studio art classes, so I wanted to take an entirely different type of course for fun. I am very interested in pop culture as well as women studies and feminism; this class seems perfect! Much of the artwork that I produce comments on our society from a feminist perspective; it will be great to learn more about a subject I already find intriguing.

Hello! My name is Breanne and I just started my senior year here at the U! Woo yeah! I am a Cultural Studies major with a minor in GWSS. I’ve taken a small handful of GWSS classes and have always found them incredibly interesting and relevant. This class sounded great, I’m excited to get into the material. (I am originally from Wisconsin. Naturally, we like to spend time in corn fields)

Hello everyone! My name is Hillary Kline, and I am currently a junior majoring in journalism.

Writing has always been my passion. As cliché as that statement might be, I firmly believe it holds truth. Whether I was writing in my diary in elementary school, being an editor of both the yearbook and newspaper in high school, to writing college stories, I thrive on what the journalism field has to offer. Right now, I am exploring broadcast journalism, print journalism and magazine writing. As I am currently indecisive, I hope to become a journalist in one of those three areas. I am currently a volunteer writer for the Minnesota Magazine & Publications Association for their bi-monthly newsletter called FinePrint, which is produced by MMPA. I feel as though by working for this publication it will give me a closer look as to how a magazine is compiled, how stories are issued, different interviewing techniques, etc. Also, this summer I will be working as the editor of the Green Laker, which is a summer edition newspaper. The Green Laker focuses on profiles of people, covering upcoming events in the area, advancing events and is mostly news feature-like stories. I have always enjoyed doing profiles, so my goal is to see if print journalism is the field I want to go into.

In my spare time, I enjoy playing piano, watercolor painting, writing, attending art museums, exploring the city, and trying new restaurants.

I took this class mainly because I am fascinated by popular culture and how genders are portrayed in the media. As a journalism major, it is important to recognize these differences that are being portrayed and try to make sense of them. I do not have cable television here, so it might be difficult for me to watch multiple hours of television considering I do not have access to it. Internet…here I come!

Although it is hard to just limit myself to simply five songs, I would choose the following to be included on my personal soundtrack:

Hi Everyone,

My name is Jasmine. I'm currently a senior or on year four. I hope to graduate this spring if all goes according to plan. I am majoring in strategic communications with a focus on advertising. I started to work on a new media studies minor, but don't have enough time to finish it. I've lived in Minneapolis my entire life. After college, I plan to travel and potentially find an internship/job along the way. I took this course because I enjoy viewing/reading/listening to things in pop culture. I also like talking/gossiping about pop culture. One of my favorite classes at the U was a media and pop culture class. I am a huge fan of watching way too much television, which I think will work well for this course.

Hello everyone,

My name is Tessa. I’m a sophomore here at the U majoring in Advertising with a minor in Cultural Studies. As an Ad major I take a lot of classes on Pop culture, the media, and media effects. I am really interested in the effects the media has on people, especially women, so this class was an easy choice for the semester and I’m super excited. I hope to get involved in some sort of research on the topic of media effects during the rest of my time at the U or sometime in the near future. Outside of class I’ve recently been busy looking up options for studying abroad next year and I’m having a really hard time picking a location or a program. So if any of you have been abroad through the U and recommend a program I’d love to hear about it.

Hello!

My name is Anna. I’m a junior majoring in English lit and minoring in GWSS at the U. I’m an English major because I love reading, and I believe that books can affect people in profound ways. I want to teach high school English when I’m a real, grown-up person.
I’m a GWSS minor because I believe that gender issues are both interesting and important. It is deceptively easy to believe that inequality, injustice and misunderstanding are a static part of life, rather than something we can work to change.
-I believe in Good.
-I like comfy pants, wild adventures and Wes Anderson.
-I dislike jerks, disrespect and wars.

If I had it my way, I’d live my entire life in music. I’d have songs for breakfast, run marathons in songs and love exclusively in songs. Helloo, my name is Carey Vosler. Most people call me Vosler, or Vos, but y'all can call me Carey. I grew up in the Black Hills of South Dakota. I'm a Journalism major, Spanish and GWSS minor. This is my third year at the University of Minnesota and I'm still not used to this freezing cold weather. I really love fashion, pop culture, jokes, music, writing, dancing, neon, and tabasco sauce. I started to make a list of the things I really hate, but then I realized I didn't want to think about that. So I guess I hate thinking about negative things. I am also trying to learn how to meditate.

I am taking this course because I need two more 3xxx level GWSS courses to finish my minor and I thought this one sounded interesting. I really hate night classes, especially because I usually go to bed at around 10:00, or earlier on accident occasionally (obviously, I'm really cool and have a hopping social life), but I think that the first class went really well and it should be interesting. Hello fellow bloggers,
My name is Mary and I am officially a junior at Wellesley College (or simply, W) in Massachusetts where I am majoring in Environmental Studies and Women's Studies. I am taking this semester off from W and I'm enrolled full-time at the U. My other three courses are all prerequisites for graduate level nursing programs, as I aspire to be a midwife. I am in this course because I knew that I would be missing W, and this seemed like the perfect slice of "home" because I'm a Women's Studies major and all of my classes usually have 10-30 students (where my second smallest here has 150 students). At W, I have a job, I'm in the jazz ensemble, and I'm vice-president of our queer advocacy group. I play tennis, badminton, and racquetball for fun (and I hope to learn squash next semester). I grew up in Saint Paul, rarely allowed to leave the house, so I watched a lot of TV, including tennis, Golden Girls, All My Children, and many different types of shows. I can't write an "about me" without mentioning my favorite actress, Catherine Keener (it's an obsession really, I love everything she does). My life is driven by music; I'm currently addicted to Tori Amos and I play the guitar, piano, trumpet, clarinet and flute.

My full name is Kathleen, but most people call me Katy. My mom spelt it with a "y" instead of the more common "ie" because she wanted my name to be more Irish. I spent the first eight years of my life in Rockford, MN, a small town about 45 minutes north of the Minneapolis. I have lived most of my life in Minneapolis. I am a member of the Women's Rugby team at the U of M and have played rugby for six years. The past three summers I have worked at a summer camp called Camp Ihduhapi. Last summer I led trips and got to spend six days hiking on the Superior Hiking Trail and six days canoeing down the St. Croix River. I am double majoring in History and GWSS, but I do not have a minor, yet. I decided to take this course because it is in one of majors and it sounded interesting. I think pop culture is fascinating.

Hi, my name is Lisa Hesse. I'm an advertising/marketing major set to graduate next fall. I am very excited to finally be able to finish my degree. I'm taking this class for a couple different reasons. First off I need some credits outside of my major in order to graduate. Hey! I'm Hannah. I'm a senior (finally) art history major/French minor. To echo a sentiment that's been repeated throughout these posts, I took this course because it sounded interesting. I like pop culture, which is odd because I tend to gravitate toward less well-known music, film, etc., and I am interested in gender/feminism. I've never taken a GWSS class here but, for the one semester I was at another school, I did take Sociology of Gender and have always been interested in women's history. I just returned from studying abroad in Paris, where I have every intention of returning asap. The only thing about the US that I missed while I was abroad is student activism--I do a lot of human rights stuff with Amnesty International on campus. (Yes, I'm super excited that President Obama has already issued the order to close Guantanamo). Apart from activism, I cook and grow veggies and read and procrastinate and write a lot and am currently trying to plan my next adventure.

My name is Dunstan PInlac. I have a culinary degree and have worked professionally as a cook for about 2 years. I decided to make a career change because I would like to develop a different set of skills so I could better contribute to the community. I am currently trying to get into nursing school but if that doesn't pan out I would be a clinical psych major. I decided to take this class because I have taken previous gender studies classes and they've always been interesting and contain people that make for good conversation. Hello all. My name is Chloe Moriarty. I am freshman majoring in Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies with a minor in Social Justice. I took this class because Katie Bashore suggested Hedgmon as an instructor and because I found the subject matter interesting. I'm extremely unengaged with pop culture myself, and think that this class will be a good way to learn and stretch myself. I like night classes because I commute so only have to come once, it's time efficient, and I hate waking up in the morning to sit in traffic! Hi! My name is Melissa O'Ryan. I work full time for MTS Systems in Eden Prairie (we manufacture simulated testing equipment) and am at the U 3 nights a week. I am a Psych major with a minor in PR but have been thinking about switching them around. I'm a junior but since I am a part time student it feels like I'll never graduate! I am a single mom with an amazing son who will be 10 in May. I registered for this class because it sounded really interesting and I thought it would be a good contrast to my Spanish class.

Hey hey,

I'm Kyla. I'm a psychology major with a minor in family violence prevention, and I'll be graduating in May [whoo]. I'm taking this class because I'm finished with every requirement for my major/minor and CLA, and so I had some credits to fill and wanted to pick the most interesting-sounding classes for my final semester. I'm super interested in feminist theory and have oddly never taken a GWSS class, so I figured it was about time. I am sad, however, that I can't watch The Office on Thursday nights anymore...

This music thing is going to be really, really difficult; there are a lot more than 5 songs that I want to put up here...

5. Set It Free by ??? - This is SUPER frustrating me right now! It's this super obscure little band that doesn't have a CD, only a myspace. This song played at the end of the movie Speak and it's fantastic [and took me forever to find the first time I looked for it a couple years ago] but I forgot the name of the band and all the googling in the world isn't helping me. I'd have to watch the end credits of the DVD again and I don't feel like doing that. I bought the song from their myspace, but on my iPod the wrong band is listed, and I never fixed it. So, yeah. I promise it exists though.

Edit: Okay, it was driving me crazy and I looked it up on the DVD. The band is "The Recorder Club". If anyone likes acousticy/guitar/folk music, check out the song at their myspace: http://www.myspace.com/therecorderclub ... Stand Clear is really only the song of theirs I like though.

Hi everyone! My name is M. L. and I will be your instructor this semester. This by far is my favorite class. I always have really interesting students, which makes it a pleasure to come to work for 2 hours and 20 minutes every week for 15 weeks. I get to read books and articles that make me think and graphic novels that I love. I have an ipod shuffle, and I'm the type of person who will listen to same 50 songs for months or I'll find that I am constantly changing my playlists to suit my mood. If I had to name five songs that I would consider a part of my personal playlist it would have to be:

Portions of Foxes by Rilo Kiley
Swan Dive by Ani DiFranco
Rock and Roll by Eric Hutchinson
Bulletproof by Kerli
Interviews by Tristan Prettyman

That was really tough but these end up on almost all of my play lists, so I guess no matter what the mood I find myself in, they fit it.
