The Lunch with a Professor Series Continues on Wed., April 18 from 11:30 am-12:30 pm in 915 Soc Sci Bldg. Come and join us for lunch and an informal discussion with Professor Kathy Hull. Wondering what to do with your sociology major after graduation? This is a great opportunity to talk with Professor Hull about her expertise. She teaches courses on Social Theory; Soc of Sexualities; Love, Sex and Marriage; and Contemporary American Culture. This is a great opportunity to get to know an instructor outside the structure of the classroom. These luncheons are open to the first 12 students. The CLA Student Board sponsors an award for Outstanding Teaching Assistants and the CLA Students' Choice Award for Outstanding Faculty. The Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs has been working with many different groups on campus over the past few years to develop a set of undergraduate student learning outcomes that would communicate to students, their families, and the public at large what a University of Minnesota graduate should know and be able to do when he or she graduates from the U. As a senior who is near the end of your time here at the University and who will soon graduate and go out into the world of work or on to graduate or professional school, the University is very interested in getting your reactions and thoughts about the learning outcomes that have been developed. Soon to be graduating seniors are invited to a discussion so that the Office can share these learning outcomes with you and get your feedback. There will be two discussion sessions (you only need sign up for one): Tues., April 24, 2:00-3:00 pm and Wed., April 25, 10:00-11:00 am; both in 12 Morrill Hal. In order to have a productive discussion, each session is limited to ten participants. Snacks and beverages will be provided during the discussion session and each participant will receive a $10 gift card to Caribou Coffee in thanks for your contribution. The Learning Abroad Center is offering "Returned Students Workshop: Market Your Experience Abroad" for students that have recently returned from a study, work, intern, or volunteer experience abroad. In this workshop, students will learn to identify skills learned abroad, articulate their experience with relevant details and anecdotes, and communicate the value of their time abroad in a resume or interview. Workshops are 1 hour and in groups of 4 or less. They are held the first and third Wednesday of every month from 3:00-4:00 pm in 230 Heller Hall. Call (612) 625-9370 to reserve a space.

You are invited to an information meeting about the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) on Wed., April 18 from 12:00-1:00 pm in 1314 Soc Sci Bldg. Rebecca Rassier will be there to talk about applying into the program. It is scheduled now so that students who might be thinking of applying in the fall can contact faculty yet this term and begin the discussion now and do some planning over the summer. The spring application deadline seems to come up very quickly in the fall­what with all the beginning of the semester activities.

The Career and Community Learning Center (CCLC) is looking for three motivated student to fill the Peer Advisor position in 345 Fraser Hall. One of the positions will start in June with some training in May and the remaining two positions will begin in mid-August. All three positions offer 10-20 hours per week. The Peer Advisors are responsible for advising students on volunteer opportunities in the Twin Cities and advising Community Engagement Scholars students. They are also maintain regular communication with community organizations and update volunteer information. Peer Advisors are responsible for the marketing and recruiting of students through class presentations, tabling and special events and work closely with professional staff on special projects and the growth of civic engagement at the University of Minnesota. Harlem RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities) is a private, non-profit organization located in East Harlem, New York. Its mission is to use baseball, softball, and the power of teams to provide inner city youth with opportunities to play, to learn and to grow, inspiring them to recognize their potential and realize their dreams. Harlem RBI is seeking dynamic, motivated individuals to serve as interns in an innovative summer program for 9-12 year-old youth in East Harlem, New York City. Harlem RBI’s summer REAL Kids (Reading and Enrichment Academy for Learning) program provides youth with a full day of educational, enrichment, and baseball activities, designed to foster a positive and supportive learning environment.

BFA students in the U of M/Guthrie Theater's BFA Actor Training Program invite undergraduate students to see "Cymbeline" and "The Winter's Tale" by William Shakespeare for free March 29-April 1! Cymbeline will be preformed Thursday, March 29 at 7:30 pm, Saturday, March 31 at 7:30 pm, and Sunday, April 1 at 2:00 pm. Winter's Tale will be preformed on Friday, March 30 at 7:30 pm, Saturday, March 31 at 2:00, and Sunday, April 1 at 7:00 pm. All preformances will take place in the Rarig Center, West Bank Arts Quarter, Stoll Thrust Theater.

The University Student Legal Services (USLS) board provides policy guidance to USLS and ensures that USLS is responsive to the current needs and wishes of the students at the University of Minnesota. The USLS Board of Directors is a student-run board composed of representatives of the University and legal communities, and includes students, faculty, University administrators, and practicing lawyers. The USLS Board is currently accepting applications for a student position on the 2007-08 board. Membership involves a time commitment of one meeting per month, generally lasting 1-2 hours and participation on a committee. Committees generally meet before the Board meetings for 45 minutes, but may meet more frequently. Visit the USLS website for more information and the application form. Applications are due April 11.

The Department of Sociology, Demographic Research Laboratory at Western Washington University offers a Summer Interdisciplinary Training Program on "Population, Health and Aging," June 25-Aug. 17, 2007. The program, funded by the National Institute on Aging, provides research and educational training to undergraduate students interested in obtaining advanced degrees in health related professions. The goal is to provide a learning experience that demonstrates interdisciplinary approaches in addressing issues in health care. Training is provided by collaborative teams of researchers and practitioners. Undergraduate students about to enter their final year of undergraduate study in either population or health-related fields, including both social science majors and science majors are invited to apply. Students selected to participate in the program will receive tuition, food, housing and access to university facilities and a travel allowance. The American Indian Studies Department in association with the English Department and the School of Journalism is pleased to announce a scholarship opportunity for an American Indian female student with a background and interest in literature, writing, and/or journalism. Students interested in applying for the scholarship should submit a transcript, a letter expressing interest in applying for the scholarship, and a two-page essay that describes: 1) their interests in writing, literature, and/or journalism, and 2) that explains how these interests coincide with their future career goals. Applications for the Neilan B. Lund Scholarship need to be submitted to the Department of American Indian Studies, Room 19 Scott Hall. The Ramsey County Attorney's Office-Victim/Witness Division is looking for an intern for the fall semester, and would like to extend this offer to undergraduate students in social science majors. They seek a responsible student that would be interested in gaining hands-on experience working with victims of crime and professionals within the criminal justice system. The intern will advise and aid property crime victims while their cases are being prosecuted. Duties include informing victims of their statutoryrights, explaining the various stages of the criminal justice process, keeping victims informed of case status, and processing necessary forms. Interns will accompany victims to courts and facilitate meetings with attorneys as needed. The intern will act as a liaison between the victim and the prosecuting attorney for the purpose of effective and timely communication. Candidate must possess excellent telephone, listening and organizational skills. Candidate must be able to understand confidentiality issues and abide by them.
