Friends, and family are a major role in children’s education. They can either influence the children in a positive or negative way. In the story we read “School Girls vs. Home Girl” her friends were influencing her in a negative way that kept her from achieving academically. For example her friends would call her a white girl if she succeeded in school, and you can actually see it through out the story when she calls this other girl, a white girl because she was doing well in school. I think that this might somehow be the same case at Lincoln. Where they don’t really see education as an escape route from where they are at.
I feel my middle school experience was nothing like that. Even though my middle school was about 50 percent asian students, it didn’t really matter much. And we didn’t even think about calling each other white, or other names just because one of us was doing well in school. I feel that my friends through out middle school and high school was the main reason why I actually stayed in school. Yeah, we would ditch school a couple times once in a while, but they are the people who helped challenge me and they made school a better environment, where we can all hang out as well as get an education.
This is an interesting comparison--basically between cultures. Do you think your friends helped you even do better in school then? Using Schoolgirls as an example is helpful--LaRhonda probably has a lot of similarities with black students at Lincoln. Why do you think those Asian students might not be doing better, though?

Posted by: Jerry at October 13, 2005 5:13 PMI have same experience as your at my school, we don't really name each other like that way. Maybe we do called the people who not tend to social and do well in school nerds, but nothing related to our races or anything.
