A newsletter gone Web 2.0

Newsletters are so 18th century, don't you think? Why wait a whole week to read about the goings-on at a place that is near and dear to your heart—the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota? Now, you don't have to.

Check out the new Institute Insider blog maintained by the Humphrey Institute communications staff and designed and implemented by MPP Candidate Graham Lampa using the University of Minnesota's UThink system. A blog is simply a website where the newest information is posted at the top and readers can usually leave comments about the site's content (We've got that too!).

Fear not! If you're not the type to visit any websites on a regular basis or isn't into this web 2.0 malarky, the Humphrey communications staff will still be sending out the weekly newsletters via email to members of the community. So you can just sit back and wait for the new-and-improved weekly newsletter to show up in your email inbox and not have to worry about a thing. But if you're adventurous and looking for a new way to interact with the community, this blog is definitely for you.

rssbig.jpgIf you like, you can check the blog in your browser every day for the latest news at the Humphrey. Or, if you're one of the increasing numbers of Internet users taking advantage of RSS feeds, you can subscribe to the Institute Insider's feed in your favorite reader. RSS feeds are website content updates stripped of all design elements, which can be aggregated together by web services (Bloglines, Google Reader, NewsGator, etc.) or in your desktop newsreader (Mozilla Thunderbird, Feedreader for Windows, Mac OS X Mail, NetNewsWire for OS X). These newsreaders bring all the content you want into one place, so instead of checking many websites to see if there is new content posted, you can just open your reader to see all of the latest headlines from all of your favorite sites in one place.

Dashboard widgetOr, if you're particularly geeky and an OS X user, I slapped together an OS X Dashboard Widget for your convenience. Just click the link above and the widget will be downloaded and installed in your Mac's Dashboard. The widget will automatically be updated with the latest posts from the Insider blog.

Kudos on a job well done Graham; very impressive. Already have the feed hooked up to Microsoft Outlook.
