Professor Arun Saldahna of the University of Minnesota's Geography Department will present "Tourism and Moralism: The Lessons of Battles over Identity in Goa, India" at a global policy seminar on Tuesday, March 10, from 12:45 to 2 p.m. in the Stassen Room (170 Humphrey Center). Saldahna will build on ethnographic findings to inquire into the rationale of Goan activists trying to mitigate the detrimental effects of global tourism. As in most tourist destinations, concerns have been raised about the environmental and social impacts of tourism in Gao, India. Saldahna will argue that, though concerns are often legitimate, the moralistic framework in which they are couched prevents a sustainable policy agenda on tourism. This seminar is sponsored by the Freeman Center for International Economic Policy. All are welcome to attend. Beverages and cookies will be served.
