Edward Alden, senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, will discuss his latest book The Closing of the American Border on Wednesday, March 18, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Humphrey Forum. Since the attacks of September 11th, the United States has tried to build new border defenses to keep out terrorists without stifling the flow of people and ideas from abroad that have built one of the world’s most dynamic nations. However, many of the new measures have cut America off from the world, punishing innocent people and discouraging some of the best and the brightest individuals from coming here. In The Closing of the American Border, Alden reports on the internal battles in the Bush administration over these new measures and chronicles the tragic stories of many who have been hurt by what resulted. This free event is open to the public and is sponsored by the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance and the Council on Foreign Relations.
