"Labor Rights in East Asia: Progress or Regress?" March 24

Professor Teri Caraway of the University of Minnesota's Political Science Department will discuss "Labor Rights in East Asia: Progress or Regress?" at a Global Policy workshop on Tuesday, March 24, from 12:45 to 2 p.m. in the Stassen Room (170 Humphrey Center). Labor rights have improved in East Asia. Democracy offers a partial explanation for this improvement. However, the laws in almost every country—democracies included—still violate international labor standards, and poor enforcement erodes these legal gains. Caraway will report on research that examines the current state of de jure and de facto individual and collective labor rights in East Asia and argue that, though unions in the region may be more free, they remain feeble. All are welcome to attend this free event. Beverages and cookies will be served. This event is sponsored by the Freeman Center for International Economic Policy.
