April 7 | Freeman Center workshop: "How Exporting Facilitates Capital Investment"
12:45–2 p.m., Stassen Room

Professor Myles Shaver, Carlson School of Management, will discuss "How Exporting Facilitates Capital Investment" at a global policy workshop on Tuesday, April 7, from 12:45 to 2 p.m. in the Stassen Room (170 Humphrey Center). Research findings across many countries indicate that exporters are ‘stronger’ firms (e.g., more productive) than non-exporters. For strategy scholars and policymakers, this begs the question of whether stronger firms become exporters, or if exporting strengthens firms. Most firm level research shows that exporting is only an outcome. In his work, Professor Shaver adds to a nascent stream of research that shows how exporting affects firms and provides evidence that exporting can foster capital investments by enabling greater firm self-finance. All are welcome to attend this free event. This workshop is sponsored by the Freeman Center for International Economic Policy.

April 8 | Shared Leadership Across Internal and External Boundaries in Schools
Noon–1:30 p.m., Room 2-206, Carlson School of Management

The Center for Integrative Leadership will host "Shared Leadership Across Internal and External Boundaries in Schools," a lecture by Professors Karen Seashore and Viviane Robinson, on Wednesday, April 8, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Room 2-206 of the Carlson School of Management. School leaders face significant barriers to becoming integrative leaders. There is a historical divide between the work of teachers and that of administrators, which makes expanding leadership domains within schools difficult; and, although schools are publicly funded and accountable organizations, they have often erected obstacles to community and parent engagement. Community engagement is typically viewed as public relations rather than an opportunity to share leadership and responsibility. In this lecture, Professor Seashore will present findings from a national study of educational leadership that will address the relationship of shared internal and external leadership and organizational performance in the United States. Professor Robinson will discuss what is known about shared internal leadership and draw from examples to illustrate the issues facing integrative leaders in public agencies. This event is free and open to the public.

April 10 | “Bioenergy Production and Sustainability”
Noon–1:30 p.m., St. Paul Student Center

The Global Network Association of Minnesota invites you to “Bioenergy Production and Sustainability,” a free lunch seminar with visiting professor Dalia Abbas, on Friday, April 10, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Cherrywood Room of the St. Paul Student Center. In Minnesota, as well as nationally and internationally, emerging markets for renewable energy have generated a growing interest in utilizing more forest biomass for energy. However, this growing interest has been paralleled with limited knowledge of the environmental impacts of removing this resource at large scale. This presentation will explore bioenergy production issues and opportunities. All are welcome to attend. Registration is required to gnam@umn.edu. Visit http://www.tc.umn.edu/~gnam/ for more information.
