The Struggle for Women's Rights in Yemen

Prominent Yemeni feminist Dr. Raufa Hassan will speak about the struggle for women's rights in Yemen over the past two decades at 4 p.m. on Thursday, October 8 in Room 110 of Heller Hall. She will talk about the debate over gender equality in education, women's political representation, and personal status laws in the context of the growing role of Islam in the Yemeni political arena. Dr. Hassan is a professor of development, gender, social change, intercultural communication, and development communications in the Mass Media College of Sanaa University. She is also the founder and former director of the first Center for Women Studies at Sanaa University. This event is cosponsored by the Institute for Global Studies and the Human Rights Program.
