The Humphrey School of Public Affairs will present the 2011 Distinguished Carlson Lecture featuring Fareed Zakaria at 12 p.m. on Friday, April 29, at Ted Mann Concert Hall on the West Bank of the University of Minnesota. Host of Fareed Zakaria GPS on CNN, editor-at-large at TIME, and a regular columnist for the Washington Post, Zakaria is widely respected for his ability to spot economic and political trends around the world. In naming him "one of the 21 most important people of the 21st century," Esquire magazine described him as "the most influential foreign policy advisor of his generation." Proceeds from the event benefit the Humphrey Public Leaders Fellowship, a scholarship initiative of the Humphrey School Advisory Council. This year's Dean's Award recipient is Bill Richardson, Former Governor of New Mexico and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Other 2011 recipients are: Nina Archabal, Retired Director of the Minnesota Historical Society; Arlen Erdahl, Former Member of Congress and Associate Director of the United State Peace Corps; Anita Patel (alumni recipient), Vice President of Racial Justice and Public Policy for the YWCA of Minneapolis; and Roger Wilkins, Civil Rights Leader, Journalist, and Professor Emeritus of History. If you missed the premiere of Hubert H. Humphrey: The Art of the Possible in September, there are two other opportunities to see this remarkable film. The documentary will be screened on Thursday, November 11, at 6 p.m. in Cowles Auditorium. A reception at 5 p.m. in the atrium will precede the film, and the screening will be followed by a conversation with two of Humphrey's lifelong friends, Geri Joseph, former U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands, and Warren Spannaus, former Minnesota Attorney General. ]]>The Humphrey School's Public Affairs Student Association (PASA) and Office of Career Services hosted a career engagement fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, February 24 in the Humphrey Center Atrium. Students met representatives from the fields of public policy (government and nonprofit management, economic development, policy analysis, social policy, global policy), urban and regional planning (environment, transportation, housing, community development, land use, workforce development), and science, environmental and technology policy.
]]>The third annual speed networking event was held on February 22 in the Humphrey Forum. It featured a training session, and a chance for alumni to help students master the art of working a room and a job fair.
]]>The second annual Brandl Lecture featured Dr. Barbara Dafoe Whitehead, discussing "The Lost Virtue of Thrift" from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, February 18, in Cowles Auditorium at the Humphrey Center. Dr. Whitehead is director of the John Templeton Center for Thrift and Generosity at the Institute for American Values in New York. Her newest book is Franklin's Thrift: The Lost History of an American Virtue. A reception followed the lecture.
