<p>The Humphrey School of Public Affairs will present the 2011 Distinguished Carlson Lecture featuring Fareed Zakaria at 12 p.m. on Friday, April 29, at Ted Mann Concert Hall on the West Bank of the University of Minnesota. Host of Fareed Zakaria GPS on CNN, editor-at-large at TIME, and a regular columnist for the Washington Post, Zakaria is widely respected for his ability to spot economic and political trends around the world. In naming him "one of the 21 most important people of the 21st century," Esquire magazine described him as "the most influential foreign policy advisor of his generation." <p>The Distinguished Carlson Lecture Series is made possible by a gift from Carlson and the Carlson Family Foundation. <p>The Hubert H. Humphrey Public Leadership Awards honor individuals, organizations, or projects that have made significant contributions to the common good through public leadership and service. Proceeds from the event benefit the Humphrey Public Leaders Fellowship, a scholarship initiative of the Humphrey School Advisory Council.  This year's Dean's Award recipient is Bill Richardson, Former Governor of New Mexico and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Other 2011 recipients are: Nina Archabal, Retired Director of the Minnesota Historical Society; Arlen Erdahl, Former Member of Congress and Associate Director of the United State Peace Corps; Anita Patel (alumni recipient), Vice President of Racial Justice and Public Policy for the YWCA of Minneapolis; and Roger Wilkins, Civil Rights Leader, Journalist, and Professor Emeritus of History. Dr. Whitehead is director of the John Templeton Center for Thrift and Generosity at the Institute for American Values in New York. Her newest book is Franklin's Thrift: The Lost History of an American Virtue. A reception followed the lecture.</p>]]>
