June 3 | Hubert H. Humphrey Public Leadership Awards
6–9 p.m., McNamara Alumni Center
The Hubert H. Humphrey Public Leadership Awards will be held on Tuesday, June 3, at the McNamara Alumni Center on the Minneapolis campus. Ward B. Chamberlin, Jr., a leader in the development of public broadcasting and a founder of AFS Intercultural Programs, will receive the Dean's Award. Chamberlin will be honored along side local leaders, including former Governor Al Quie and Minnesota's former First Lady Jane Freeman. June 4 | "Long-Term Care Financing Solutions: Choice, Responsibility, Fairness� 8 a.m.–12:15 p.m., Cowles Auditorium
Ten million Americans need long-term care. As our country ages, that number will grow. How will we finance long-term care in the coming years? The Center for the Study of Politics and Governance will host "Long-Term Care Financing Solutions: Choice, Responsibility, Fairness� from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4, to discuss potential solutions and finance reform. June 9–10 | "The Future of Leadership�
The Public and Nonprofit Leadership Center and the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits will co-sponsor "The Future of Leadership� June 9 and 10 at the McNamara Alumni Center. Leadership experts will discuss the principles of nonprofit leadership, the role leaders play in organizations, and the ways that nonprofit leadership strengthens organizations and communities. June 19 | "TechPlan: New Frontiers in Transportation Policy, Technology, and Planning�
1–5 p.m., 180 Humphrey Center
The State and Local Policy Program (SLPP) will co-host "TechPlan: New Frontiers in Transportation Policy, Technology, and Planning� on Thursday, June 19, from 1 to 5 p.m. in room 180 at the Humphrey Institute. Researchers will present their findings on six research projects funded by SLPP and the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Institute at the University of Minnesota. Following the research presentations, a panel of local and national experts will respond to the research and its implications for the broader spectrum of ITS-related policy. July 23: The Women and Politics Reading Group will discuss Barbara Jordan: American Hero by Mary Beth Rogers at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23, in Freeman Commons (205 HHH). Barbara Jordan was the first African American to serve in the Texas Senate since Reconstruction, the first black woman elected to Congress from the South, and the first to deliver the keynote address at a national party convention. Yet Jordan herself remained a mystery, a woman so private that even her close friends did not know the name of the illness that debilitated her for two decades until it struck her down at the age of fifty-nine. In Barbara Jordan, Mary Beth Rogers explores the life of this extraordinary woman.
July 24: Senior Fellow Harry Boyte will talk about "Re-inspiring Citizenship in the 2008 Election� from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, at the Weisman Art Museum. Other panelists include WCCO news anchor Don Shelby, who wrote the forward in Boyte's recent book, The Citizen Solution: How You Can Make A Difference.
