Larry Jacobs, who heads the Center for Study of Politics and Governance at the University of Minnesota, said these comments could be especially harmful to Hegseth's campaign because they cut against the image Hegseth has created of a "clean-cut" veteran without the traditional baggage of a voting record. Because he is such an unknown to Minnesota voters, Jacobs explained, there will be significant scrutiny of the paper trail from his college years.
