Their attention to art and community building isn't out of step with what some top foundations are doing these days. For instance, the Kresge Foundation, a $3.1 billion private, national foundation that makes its home in Detroit, has a funding program for projects that work to revitalize communities via cultural organizations. Those projects involve several partners in communities, often ones that work in social services and public safety. They also frequently include local governments.
