Edson Spencer was a pioneer in technology.

After being discharged in 1946 as an officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve, he graduated from Williams College and earned a master's degree from Oxford University, which he attended for two years as a Rhodes scholar, according to his resume on the website of the Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota, where he was a former chairman of the Deans Advisory Council.
