Ann Markusen links exposure to the arts to increased job satisfaction.
Plenty of studies back the wisdom of this investment. Ann Markusen, director of the Project on Regional and Industrial Economics at the University of Minnesota's Humphrey School of Public Affairs, recently cited one such study. An effort called the Strategic National Arts Alumni Project found that of 13,600 graduates from 154 U.S. public and private college arts programs, conservatories and arts high schools, 81 percent found jobs soon after graduation. Markusen noted in a 2011 commentary that their current unemployment rates (6 percent) were substantially below the national average, and their job satisfaction levels are high. Wisconsin communities need these kinds of young people.
