Forum on European Expansion and Global Interaction [FEEGI], April 19-21

On Thursday, April 19, Kris Lane (Tulane University) presented "On the Mar del Sur: Early Spanish Trade in Pacific South America" to open the Forum for European Expansion and Global Interaction and to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Center for Early Modern History. The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the James Ford Bell Library.

The Forum on European Expansion and Global Interaction [FEEGI] biennial conference will be held at the University of Minnesota on April 19-21, 2012. The conference is being held in cooperation with the Center for Early Modern History, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary, and the James Ford Bell Library, which will be holding an exhibit on "Encounters in the Pacific Rim."

Kris Lane is the Frances V. Scholes Professor of Colonial Latin American History at Tulane University and the General Editor of the Colonial Latin American Review. He specializes in the colonial history of the Andes, mining, piracy, and global trade. Among other works, he is the author of "Gone Platinum: Contraband and Chemistry in Eighteenth-Century Colombia" (2011), The Colour of Paradise: The Emerald in the Age of Gunpowder Empires (2010), Quito, 1599: City and Colony in Transition (2002), and Pillaging the Empire: Piracy in the Americas, 1500-1750 (1998). Professor Lane received his Ph.D. in History from the University of Minnesota in 1996.
