About Diane's Blog

Diane's story about work was really interesting. It wasn't the kind of work that you do because you have to. She went out of her way to help people out, and she didn't get paid for it. Wow. It sounded like really hard work, especially with the heat. I give her mad props for doing that. I can kind of relate to what she did because i went on a service trip too. I went to South Carolinia, and we fix people's house who couldn't afford it. It was one of the best experiences of my life. It felt really good to help other people out and know that you can positively effect someone else's life. Diane's story was a little different because she went out of the country and she actually bulit entire buildings from nothing. This is something that i think every person should try to do. It is really eye opening and it helps us be aware of the world around us. We are all so fortunate compared to a lot of people, so we should have a problem with help those people. I knew that i was really interested in going on another service trip, and after reading Diane's blog, it just makes me even more interested.

When I think about work, this past summer is the first thing that comes to my mind. I worked in a mill so that I could make money for college. When most people think of working in a mill, they think of it as being gruesome and not very fun. I actually had an awesome time this summer. It was a really different experience then I am use to, but I got used to it fast. I was basically a helper. All I would have to do is help the operators get their machines up and running. When the machines were all running, I would have to help with roll changes and then take the rolls away with a tow motor. The tow motor was the best part. It was so much fun to drive. Instead of it haing front wheel steering like cars, it has back wheel steer, which makes it feel like you are driving a go-kart. Also, when the machines broke down I had to help the operator fix them. It was a messy, but fun job. The group of guys that i worked with were realy crazy, but I had a really good time with them. They called me pebbles and they liked to play jokes on me. I got to make a lot of money this summer, adn I had fun doing it!

Just Live

Live in the present, not the past. I think that everyone should live by these words. It is very important that we don’t dwell on the past; doing this will only negatively effect the present and the future. What happens in the past is unchangeable, so it isn’t worth getting all worked up over. I don’t think that anyone should live in the past, but I do think that we have to learn from the past. I don’t take this as living in the past, just being aware of it. If we are simply aware of what we have done in the past, then our present and futures will be brighter. I think that not living in the past goes along with not living in the future. We need to just focus on what is happening now, if we think about the future, we won’t experience the beauty of the present. Again, we need to make sure what we are doing in the present is going to help our future, but we don’t need to dwell on the future either. Basically, live life to it’s fullest and enjoy each day, just remember, your actions have consequences and we must learn from these consequences.

Halloween is one of the best holidays. Of course it is second behind Christmas, but it is still one of the bests. Halloween is one of the only times that you can be or act like whatever you want. The best part about it is that it can be as far fetched as you want. When you ask a little kid what they want to be when they grow up, they say things that seem impossible. Whether their dreams come true or not, on Halloween they can always be whatever they dream about. Plus, who can complain about getting tons of candy for free? This is the only time a year that parents won’t be on your case about eating too much candy. So basically, Halloween allows people to make their dreams come true for a day, and get all the candy they want. This obviously makes it one of the best holidays there are.

be yourself

In the piece we read by Emerson, he talked a lot about being yourself. Basically, he wants us to forget about society and the people around us. I think that this sounds drastic, but it is true. We can’t let society dictate the person we will become. If we do, there would be no individualism; everyone would be the same. How fun would a society of people with the same personalities be? I don’t think it would be fun at all. Being ourselves is what makes life interesting. In the Underground, Dostoevsky took a different side to the matter. He said that if we all strived for individualism we wouldn’t get anything done. I think that he took the other drastic side of the matter. I also agree in a sense with Dostoevsky. This may sound hypocritical, but it really isn’t. I think that we do need to be ourselves, but there are times when we need to work and compromise with others. This is simply not taking a drastic approach to either side!

The TV

In my mind, the medium that is the most popular is the television. This medium is also getting more popular as the years go on. I think that the TV is the most popular medium because it doesn’t require any skills. A child or even teen doesn’t have to be worried about how well or fast they can watch TV, but they do have to worry about that with reading. The television also allows people to multitask, by doing other things while watching TV. Other mediums don’t make multitasking very possible. I think that the growing popularity for this medium is a bad thing. There are many reasons, but the most important is that the TV doesn’t help a child’s imagination. The TV basically tells them what they need to think. A book, on the other hand, can allow a child to imagine what he or she is reading. Every parent should be reading to their child instead of sticking them in front of the television. The television isn’t always bad, but I just think there needs to be more reading.

Had a Bad Day

Today I had a horrible day, so I decided to write about it. It started when I woke up really, really tired. The next bad thing was the weather! It was cold, crappy, and rainy outside. Yesterday it was sort of warm, so I went out side with just a jacket. When I got to class I couldn’t feel my ears. English wasn’t to bad, until I found I had a rough draft of an 8-10 page paper due Monday. I wanted to go back home and take a nap, but instead I had to look for sources on the library’s web page. I have taken both of the unravels, and I was still really lost. The only thing I knew how to do was how to chat with a librarian. This was interesting, but not too much help. Next it was time for class. I sat through math, which I have a midterm in next Friday. Then I sat through chemistry (well barely, I was falling asleep). I have a midterm in this on Wednesday of next week. Have I mentioned that I am NOT ready for either midterm? After class I went straight to the library, which was useless. They sent me over to the Bio-Medical Library. I finally found two books. I went to eat dinner from there, and after I had to go to Spanish class. Spanish isn’t too bad of a class, but it had to be now that I got assigned another paper and we have a test on Monday! Let’s just say that it isn’t a good week, and next week won’t be better. Oprah is my idol. Some people might not like her, but I would have to disagree strongly! She is probably one of the most powerful and wealthy women in the world. Also, she is ALWAYS giving. Her Angel Foundation has helped so many different families. A lot of people say that she is so rich that is why it is easy for her to help all of these people. A agree with that, but she wasn’t always rich. She made herself into who she is today through a lot of hard work! I have done plenty of projects on Oprah, which also means I have research a lot about her. When she was younger she was very, very poor and she had to deal with some bad things that most children never hear about. Oprah made it out of that all, and she came out on top because of her strength and persistence. She earned everything she has, and someday I want to be able to know I worked long and hard for what I have. I think every girl that needs inspiration should look to Oprah; I know I do!

Music is probably the best thing that was ever thought up! I mean, who doesn’t like listening to music. The best thing about it is that there are so many different types. There is a kind of music to fit everyone’s personality. Personally, I like a lot of different types of music. My variety goes from oldies, like Elton John, to rock, to country. I will basically listen to everything. It really depends on the mood I am in, which is also a plus about music. It can either improve your mood or set your mood. Right now I have a lot of favorite songs. In no particular order, they are: Lips of an Angel, Tiny Dancer, How to Save a Life, Like Red on a Rose, Fat Bottomed Girls, and Anytime by Eve 6. As you can see, these songs are nothing alike. I absolutely love listening to music! I don’t think there is anyone that doesn’t.

Research paper

Research papers are not too bad if you choose a good topic. This is my problem; I can’t seem to find that perfect topic. A perfect topic is one that you can write about for nine pages without a problem and it is something that interests you. So, with this in mind, I found topic that I have a strong opinion about, but it doesn’t interest me all that much. I am thinking about writing my paper on stem cell research and the Catholic Churches views. Another good thing about this topic is that I can easily find a lot of information and therefore it won’t be too hard to write nine pages. My main argument is going to be that I think the Church needs to modernize a lot of their views. The Church is still very old school, and they don’t like to accept some of the new technological advances. I agree that killing embryos for the stem cells is bad, but there are other ways to get stem cells without harming a life. I just think the Church should be more open to these things. Hopefully this will make for a good research paper.

The press and their liberty

I strongly believe that the local press has way too much liberty. Journalists don’t even think about how they might be affected someone else’s life. All they are worried about is whether their story will make the front page. I didn’t have this strong opinion until very recently. Just this past summer, a boy that graduated from my high school got into a very, very bad accident. He had to be flown to the hospital where he underwent many surgeries. The doctors even thought that they might have to amputate his leg. His accident happened late at night, which made it look rather suspicious. The next day, the newspaper article gave his name, age, school, and said that the accident was due to speeding, alcohol, and use of illegal substances. Where I am from, information travels really fast. Everyone was in shock and very disappointed to hear what had happened. Then, we find out later that the story was wrong. Alcohol and illegal drugs were NOT a factor in the accident. Information through a newspaper obviously gets to a lot more people then information by word of mouth. Now, because of one journalist, the boy has a very bad reputation, which isn’t even the truth. This should have never happened, and it is because the press has too much liberty to do whatever they want!

Out of the four seasons I think that fall is the best! The reasoning behind this is very simple. First, the weather is amazing. It isn’t too cold, or too hot, but just perfect. You might say, well what about spring? I think spring is too wet. It is usually rainy and it is still wet from the snow melting. Fall on the other hand, is very comfortable. This leads to the second reason why fall is the best. The perfect weather allows you to wear the best clothing. There is nothing like being able to go outside and be comfortable in jeans and a sweatshirt. Also, during fall you get to wear the really cute jackets, not like winter where you have to wear the big and puffy ones. The last reason that I love fall is the colors! It is such a pretty season. There are so many bright colors everywhere. The red, orange, and yellow leaves in the trees and on the ground make for great scenery. For all of these reasons, it is clear that fall I s the best season.

The word fate is very unclear to many people, as well as myself. The dictionary says that fate is something that unavoidably befalls a person. I don’t know if I completely agree with this definition. I believe that there are certain things that can be controlled and certain things that can’t. In my eyes, each and every person is in charge of their fate. It is all up to the decisions we make. Each of our decisions will effect what happens to us. Some people might say that the decision you make is your fate, but I don’t believe that is true either. Everyone has choices and that is part of being a human. All of the killers out there had the choice not to kill, but they did. They made the WRONG choice, and that was what affected their fate. The only thing that I don’t think we can control is other people’s choices and how they affect us. If someone makes a bad choice and decides to drive drunk, we can’t control that. Although, as individuals I do believe we have the power to determine our fate.

You can do it!

I strongly believe that one person can make a difference! Each and every one of us has it in us to do something big. We just have to work at it and believe. There are so many examples of this that come to mind. There’s Mother Teresa, and on the other end of the spectrum there is Oprah Winfrey. Mother Teresa is a better example to show that money isn’t necessary to change the world. Oprah is a good example of how to believe in yourself and accomplish big goals. Regardless, we are all capable of making a difference. Sure, having other people help is a bonus and makes things easier, but I believe it is still possible for one person to do on their own. Plus, people are attracted to those leaders who have confidence. It’s a strong will and self-belief that bring people to follow. With or without followers, any person can make their ideas become reality. It just takes a little work and determination.

I have never realized how complicated laundry is! There are so many things that you have to remember. For example, whites go on hot and make sure you don’t put any other colors in with the whites. You may be wondering why I am writing about laundry. Well, I am actually sitting in the laundry room right now. Another bad thing about laundry is that it takes so long. Once the thirty or so minutes are up from the washer, then you have to wait another forty minutes for the dryer! Oh, and you can’t forget about folding. This is actually the worse part because it takes a while and involves you doing manual work. Plus, the clothes are so hot and it makes you really warm. I never knew why my mom hates Sundays (laundry day) so much. Well now I know and understand. I put my laundry off for as long as I can, which is probably not good. When I actually go and do it I have so much that it takes forever! There is only one good thing about doing the laundry. I can actually get work done. I have to stay and wait for my loads to finish, so I might as well be doing something. There is nothing in the laundry room to distract me, so I can get so much done. In the end, I guess laundry is all that bad. Who knows, maybe it will help me be a better student?! Ha!
