The Artistic Engineer

Choosing one management style can be difficult to do. The difference between managers that are engineers and managers that are artists is that the engineers are more structured in what they do than artists are. They delegate tasks for everyone, they help out wherever needed, and they are the ones in charge of making sure everyone is following the rules. Artists, on the other hand, are more flexible in their leadership. They focus less on rules and more on using other people to help solve problems. I think that I am a little of both. I very much enjoy order and in work setting, I like to know my role and I like when others know their roles. However, over time, I have become a much more flexible person and I think that has shown in all parts of my life. I like to look at things differently and in more than one way. I like consulting others when issues arise and not looking to the "rule book." I have come to embrace uncertainty and creativity. In addition, being an engineer is stressful. I have enough stress in my life. If I were a manager, I would strive to be more of an artist than an engineer. However, both are a part of who I am.

Would you agree that being an artist can be stressful too? Being flexible to make sure that everyone's opinions are considered sounds like it would take a lot of work!
