What are the Advertising Doing to Viewers?

Advertisers take advantage of viewer's emotions and vulnerability when they create advertisements. People like to believe that if they use this product that they will lose weight or be as pretty as the model in the photo. Even though deep down inside we all know that it won't really change us that much and that those models in the advertisements are Photoshopped so much its impossible to look like them. Yet we still catch ourselves buying products that celebrities have endorsed just in hope of achieving their level of greatness.

In this Victoria Secret Advertisement they use the hot model to make women want to look like her, like a "Bombshell." They try to convince the consumers that if they buy a bra from their store that they will look as beautiful as the model in their advertisement.

In the Victoria Secret Advertisement above the Conditioned Stimulus is the Victoria Secret Bra. The Unconditioned Stimulus is the feeling that she looks like a "Bombshell." The Unconditioned Response is wanting to look as amazing as the Victoria Secrets Model. The Conditioned Response is wanting to look hot too when seeing Victoria Secret bras.

This post is really great. I like to think that I am not influenced by this advertisement but I probably am! So many people these days are using attractive women to sell their products. I think that when an attractive woman is used to sell a product a man would buy is extremely effective. However, when a man is used to sell something that another man would buy it is only somewhat influential. I think personally I am more interested in buying something that an attractive male is advertising. This is a great post because it is an advertisement that is relevant today!

This seems to be the most common advertisement strategy used by clothing companies. Regardless of if it is mens or womens clothing, the models used are always there to make it seem like buying the product will make you look like them. While it may seem easy to tell that it is just a hoax and everything is photoshopped, it still invokes some kind of connection in us.

First off, I would to say Great Post! and skarr067 brought up a very good point that I had not thought about...the difference of the effectiveness if it was a man or woman. Me, personally I am influenced by the reviews on the product, not the model.

I agree with a lot of points mentioned above. I think one of the main, if not the main tactic of advertisers is to get us to have the idea that we will feel great using the prodduct, whatever it may be. The product and the person being shown endorsing the product may be totally unrelated but may still be able to instill positive emotions in the viewer and make him/her want to buy the product. I saw a commercial of a gymnast performing a complicated balance beam routine and the ad turned out to be for car insurance. It's amazing what advertisers can do to give us the desire to buy their product.

I believe the main qualities of a successful ad is its ability to get a consumer’s attention, focus the attention onto the message, make the buyer remember the message and get the consumer to do what you want, which is buy the product.
