Starting to Get Sleepy

In five years if I am thinking about that psychology class from freshman year, I hope that something will have stuck with me. As of now the thing that I think I will remember is the effect that sleep can have on our brains. I had always heard the stories that a person needs so much sleep otherwise they won't function as well as possible. But it wasn't until this class that I learned the types of things that could come from lack of sleep, as well as the symptoms of sleep disorders. Chapter Five's information made me think about how much sleep I was getting and the things I was doing before going to bed that might make it harder to fall asleep. Since reading the chapter I've started to make a conscious effort to try and get the sleep I need, as well as attempted to increase my odds at lucid dreaming.

Once I began noticing how much better it was to have a healthy amount of sleep throughout weeks of classes and studying, there was no way to forget about it. That is part of the reason I'm thinking that the topic of sleep in psychology will stick with me for at least five years.

Sleep is a crucial element of our biological function. Meeting our sleep needs is one of the most important things we can do for ourselves. You know that they say in college you can have a social life, good grades, and enough sleep but that you can only choose two. If anyone is wise enough they will choose to get enough sleep. However, the other one is up to them to pick!

In light of finals week, I am really glad that someone mentioned the effects that a lack of sleep can have on the brain. While it is well known that cramming all night before a test does not do much for long term memory, another factor in this might be the fact that cramming for days straight interferes catastrophically with our sleep schedules. This lack of sleep, which causes trouble with focus, memory, and alertness, may counteract any benefit that we could actually gain from cramming. That being said it is nearly impossible to keep a perfect sleep schedule during these stressful weeks, but it is important we do our best to keep it close to normal.

I have to agree with you that this class has definitely highlighted the importance of sleep in my life. I remember when we did a sleep survey in our discussion sections around the time we had learned the material on sleep and how it affects us. It was truly amazing that about over three fourths of the class was not getting enough sleep because of certain events in their life or just because of something as simple as school. This material reminds me that in order to succeed in my school work I should be focusing on also getting enough sleep. Over all great and interesting post!

I don't think I needed this class to highlight the importance of sleep in my life. You could say I'm one of those people who is useless on anything less than 6 and not-so-great on anything less than 8. Sleep is the #1 deciding factor on my mood and my day. I actually pulled an all-nighter for a psych exam once and completely bombed the final the next day. I'm pretty sure it was due to lack of sleep, and I'm pretty sure this chapter was part of that unit.

Understanding the importance of sleep definitely is a lot more important now that we have the freedom to sleep on our own schedules. Before this class I didn't understand the reason why i would be sleepy one night and why another I wouldn't be able to sleep. After learning all the material in that chapter, I have been sleeping more on a fixed ratio and have been more awake since and have been more successful in school. Fun little way I incorporated psych in my every day.
