THE TRUTH:
Pat Tillman was killed by a bunch of his own Rangers that lacked combat experience. He got shot in the back with a SAW (squad automatic weapon), while maneuvering on a hill.

Jessica Lynch and her band of REMFS (the 507th) did not properly maintain their weapons or know how to operate them. They did not know how or why they had to do this little function called headspace and timing on their .50 caliber machine gun(s), which is VERY IMPORTANT in making the weapon fire correctly. For this and many other maintenance related reasons, when they were attacked they could not return fire, and then they got their asses handed to them. What a bunch of careless idiots! All of them...

You raise some really good issues this week. I have always been a little confused about the arguments against gays in the military. Particularly given the fact that some of the most efficient military organizations in history have not had the same hang ups (The Spartans used homosexuality to build esprit de corps). As far as training, what you are suggesting only makes sense. Better trained soldiers, better prepared soldiers, means better soldiers period or so logic would dictate, and it only seems reasonable that everyone in a combat zone be capable of using their weapon. Your story about the finance guy trying to load his weapon was tragically comic and reminded me a little of Catch 22 by Joseph Heller. 5/5
