I live in Indiana. Been fishing in Minnesota a few times at Lake Winnebigoshish in Ithaca County. I've read just about everything on the internet regarding blackpowder rifles and that's how I found your blog. I have a Pedersoli Frontier flintlock rifle in .36 caliber and a Pedersoli Kentucky flintlock pistol in .45. Also a Hawkins .50 pistol and a Thompson Center Hawken in .50 caliber.
I am no expert in blackpowder firearms but I have
gained alot of knowledge on the internet especially in muzzleloading forums. Beartooth bullets forum is an excellent place to get technical information. I've been interested lately in 1860's target rifles that use elongated bullets
in fast twist rate barrels with Rigby or Henry rifling and the like. It was the time just before blackpowder cartridges came into use.
I'd like to build such a rifle in .44 caliber for hunting someday.I came to the conclusion that a .54 caliber roundball rifle with 1 in 66 inch twist rate is just about ideal for deer but a bullet rifle that shoots paper patched bullets is a challenge I'd like to take on. If it were to be a breech loader (not a cartridge rifle) that would be more of a challenge but the bullets would not get deformed when loading. Breech loading rifles date back to the revolutionary war.
I've heard many gripes about bore butter and "seasoning" a bore. I used to use it in my .36 caliber squirrel rifle but don't now.

I own a cva wolf 209 in line ignition, i have recently become aware of some controversy about the metallurgy of the barrels and breech plugs. comments I have read indicate that the barrels may not be suitable for pressure deemed appropriate in the shooting community. Is there an organization or lab that certifies the pressures of these barrels ?
Just learning to shoot blk pwdr and would appreciate
any info regarding this controversy.

My father-in-law was big into black powder for white tail deer before he died. I never got the chance to learn from him, so I stick to my tried and true 30-06. I have also done some bow hunting, but never been successful.

Rifle scopes paired with black powder rifles seem to go against the very nature of sport. I think a lot of people take up muzzle loading simply because they have a special season in many parts of the country. Adding a rifle scope just seems unnatural, kind of like adding a pistol scope to a .44 Mag.

I have used black powder pistols, rifles and shotguns for a lot of hunting. Black powder guns are my preferred firearm to use. I also like to stay with the old style type guns over the in-lines of today.

in my experience the inexpensive CVA guns shoot just as well as the Expensive Knight and T/C ones. The new higher priced CVA models have just as good triggers also.

Another great challenge in hunting is to try blackpowder. I love the fiber optic sites, they really make for a quick aim.

I think most hunters who use black powder are just trying to expand their hunting options because most states offer early and longer seasons for BP hunting. But there are a few that do it for nostalgia sack and they are less likely to use modern scopes, etc.

Some of us use scopes because the open irons get smaller and fuzzier every year.

I have discovered that if you just work hard and are consistent you can go places. Look at the author of this page, they are obviously a hard worker and have just been consistent over time and are now enjoying at least what would appear as somewhat of a success. I would encourage everyone to just keep hustling and moving forward.
