revolver deer hunting

party deer hunting in sw minnesota in the forested river flats, during two group drives, i got two whitetail deer---one small 5 point buck and one doe. i used a .357 revolver because the new winchester 30-30 i had purchased for the hunt, a few days before, would not seat or cycle cartridges (in hindsight most likely clogged with grease or defective), i returned it. so i was was stuck with only a 12 gauge bird shotgun or my sighted in .357 at 25 yards. the buck was leaping right to left about 500 yards (oops!) i mean 35 yards and the doe passed me left to right at about 20 yards (had one graze wound). they were not difficult shots, i used winchester factory ammo .
my pistol reputation was built that day, because i had witnesses---it was really just timing, i was at the right places at the right time. i have not used my pistol since, my buddy is borrowing it to use in se minnesota where it is shotgun slugs only or deer size caliber pistol i.e., .357, 44 magnum, 41mag etc.
i now prefer a remington rifle auto or pump for deer in a .308 (2,820 fps) or 30-06 (2910 feet per second) caliber , leupold 2-7X scope with remington corloc 150 grain, less aim lead when they bolt out of hiding, i find them faster to get on target and release button safety in quick aiming.
i finally purchased a 30-06 bolt action ruger m2 w 3-9x scope, extremely accurate, but the the 3 position safety is slow and loud, bolt cycling is slow and i do not care for the top loading e.g., no detachable clip, but mechanically reliable. an excellent open cover rifle but not dense woods---where a quick second shot is needed. yes i have blooded it.

Very good blog! I just subscribed I love reading your stories, keep the hunting stories coming! Do you ever use camouflage?

Cool story. You were lucky to get two of them. Ever tried hunting with compound bows? Unbelievable experience.

Posted by: Compound Bows For Sale at July 26, 2009 2:59 AM

I have to agree with your Remington rifle auto or pump thoughts. That is really the way to go. Did you eat the two deer you hunted? Venice can be really tasty if you season it right.

Posted by: Deer Hunting Games at November 1, 2009 1:32 AM

That's crazy doing that stuff with a hand gun. I could only imagine!

Posted by: Varmint Huntin at November 27, 2009 6:25 PM

Many times, you can hunt with a revolver at the guided, trophy hunts. I did this at Apple Creek Whitetails in Wisconsin. It was the trip of a lifetime.

Posted by: deer hunting trips at January 11, 2010 9:36 AM

The greatest hunting trip I have ever taken was a guided trip with my 11 year old son for trophy bucks, incredible.

Great story about deer hunting with a revolver. Hunting with a handgun involves using the skill and stealth that bow hunters use without the high chance of a lost kill.

Posted by: Deer Hunting Tips at February 25, 2010 5:45 PM

Great story! I remember the first deer I killed, I shot it on the run through my scope at about 50 yards. I was only 13 years old except I didn't have any witnesses.

Posted by: Coyote Hunting at March 21, 2010 8:13 AM

Sounds like a pretty amazing shot! I killed my first deer with a .270 rifle. Can't wait till hunting season rolls back around.

I have found that deer hunting with a handgun offers the challenges of bow hunting (required stealth) without the chance for wounding without harvesting.

Posted by: John Eaglesmith at July 24, 2010 11:03 AM

Its always fun to challenge your self with a new weapon. My father recently did wild boars with a 44. When they charge you at close range its quite the eye opener.

Posted by: Get Paid to Hunt at July 24, 2010 7:06 PM

I use my Ruger Blackhawk .357 (1963 three screw) on coyotes and cats when I am lucky enough to get them to come closer than 50 yards. I have always enjoyed the extra challenge hunting with handguns adds.

Posted by: Camping Checklists at July 25, 2010 9:45 PM

Been hunting several years with a six inch 357 Ruger security six. Seems the 180 grain cast bullets gives the best results in this combination. Accurate too.

Posted by: Big game hunter at July 27, 2010 5:22 AM

Still can't get comfortable enough to hunt with a handgun. For me it's like teeing off with a putter. Yea it works but you have to hit it perfect. It's the end of July and the fields are full of grain. Eat well my big friends.

Hello Duke,

I have never hunted with a handgun but I have recently started hunting with a Ten Point Crossbow. I hunted in Argentina in April and took a Red Stag, Water Buffalo and a Multi-Horned Ram with my crossbow. I see this hunting blog is almost 4 years old. Do you have any new deer hunting stories to post?

Thought I'd share this... I once killed a deer with my golf driver. I was actually teeing off at the 6th when I smacked a great drive down the fairway. It was so good I actually lost site of it...

However, I soon discovered my golf ball a long with a dead deer. Must have hit the thing hard in the head as it was sparko when I retrieved my ball.

The darn thing cost me at least another 50 yards in distance.

Posted by: Golf Swing Slice at August 12, 2010 10:22 AM

I'm glad you hit them, because it would suck to just wound them... have them wander off and die. Part of the sport is an accurate clean kill... and rifles are the way to do that.

Posted by: West Yellowstone Hotels at August 15, 2010 10:03 PM

I'm an animal lover and I respect nature very much so I would definitely say no to deer hunting or any animal in that case. Didn't you guys ever though that animals have feelings too?

Posted by: Karen at August 23, 2010 10:55 AM

I also struck and hit a baby deer with a golf ball with a 4 iron, the deer died. I hit the ball hard and low, the deer ran straight out of the trees.

This was for me a sad moment as it was not intentional, am sure you understand.

Posted by: The Simple Golf Swing Man at August 26, 2010 5:08 AM

Don't you enjoy just watching the deer run around the corner your tent? I feel so sad every time I hear people wanting to hunt animals... How about animals hunting us? What would you feel? I am not a kill joy or whatever you call it but don't you think animals deserve some respect too?

Posted by: Rebecca at August 27, 2010 9:21 PM

In my opinion deers are very calm and friendly animals. Usually I have seen them from distance but one time it came out of nowhere, stood in front of me and just stared. After a minute or so it turned and went away. From that moment I love deers and I'm not capable of hurting them.

I love the idea that you can go hunting with a handgun, even though many people do not practice it. A rifle tends to give away the hunter's position more than a handgun, and in the thicket a rifle can be unmanageable.
Love this!

Each to his own, but I prefer to watch deer in the wild instead of shooting them.

Posted by: Camping at November 8, 2010 7:02 PM

I can't imagine deer hunting with a shotgun let alone a pistol... You would really have to be right on top of the animal in order to get good shot...

As strange as that sounds to me this may sound even more unusual to you... I use a standard length Wood-stock M1A with a three round clip. The three round clip makes it legal. It too uses the .308 around - good knock-down power and not too much of a kick. love this gun.

Good post though... Thanks.

I also heard about a guy who used a revolver to hunt deer in my state of Washington. He said that carrying a rifle gets really tiring because he's short in stature. It seems to me, and I've never hunted anything bigger than a mouse, that if you're out deer hunting with revolver, you would almost have to trip over one that's asleep in the brush, so that when it got up and took off, you'd at least have a chance of hitting it.

Posted by: GT Knives at December 2, 2010 11:22 PM

Has anyone used .270 winchester rifle? It's a derivative of 30-60 bolt action necked down. It is by far one of the best deer hunting cartridge. I simply cannot imagine an opening day of deer season without my old 270 Winchester in my hands.

A key to handgun hunting is a good scope and a really stable base like a sandbag. The center fire handguns are so strong that it is impossible to shoot well with out the support system

Posted by: John at January 11, 2011 3:56 PM

Still great shots in the excitement of seeing two deer and having the rifle malfunction. Have to have some grit to shoot well under those circumstances - and resilience. Great job.

Top-loading isn't really bad for a 30-06. A good hit from that caliber and a deer is going down. You shouldn't need a clip.
