MLA 2006

memphis2006logo.gif

Been walkin' in Memphis...and no, Elvis has not left the building! The 2006 Music Library Association conference, held in Memphis this past week was another truly fabulous meeting. It's such a great opportunity to meet colleagues, learn about what's new and see new products in the exhibit hall. MLA also celebrated its 75th anniversary this year in grand style with several of the group's past president and MLA citation winners present.

I'll be posting some conference reports to the TS website conference page, and would be happy to answer any questions about the conference. Pictures and information are also available from infoshare, the blog sponsored by the Information Sharing Subcommittee of the Reference and Public Services Committee. New this year was a conference wiki to share unofficial news and information about Memphis and MLA.

Live from Memphis

Greetings from Memphis!

There have been many interesting sessions so far. The music digitization workshop was great! Today I'll be attending the Aleph Music Users Group, my subcommittee meeting, and a session on musical form/genre headings. Tomorrow it's "Cataloging Day" with the RDA update, and other cataloging-related sessions.

See you on Monday!!

LCRI 22.17 (Addition of dates to existing personal name headings)

To follow up on Stephen's message regarding the implementation of LCRI 22.17 (Addition of dates to existing personal name headings), here's more information about Cataloging Policy and Support Office's project to retrospectively deal with a specific group of name headings:

As a result of the change to LCRI 22.17 the CPSO has announced the list of headings to which they will add death dates as part of a special project beginning February 6, 2006. The project is expected to be finished by summer 2006. There are several music-related name headings in the list, including Samuel Barber, Count Basie, Leonard Bernstein, Perry Como, George Harrison, Frank Sinatra, Michael Tippett, plus many others.

It was decided at the CCG meeting yesterday to follow whatever policy LC puts forth regarding adding death dates (i.e., we will not search retrospectively for headings to change, but will only change those headings encountered in current cataloging.) See the forthcoming CCG minutes for further information.

Scores Exceeding 27 cm. in Width

Do not assign "Quarto" or "Folio" size designations for scores that are less than 27 cm. in height but exceed 27 cm. width (e.g., organ or keyboard music, etc.). For scores that are 40 cm. or greater in width, assign the size designation "Oversize."

I've added this instruction to the Streamliners guides for scores.

There's a new code for Reserve for the Music Library--TMURS. This code will appear when items are put on reserve. See the list of Aleph TC sub-libraries and collection codes here.
