Greetings from MLA in Pittsburgh
Greetings from sunny Pittsburgh--I hear the weather's not so good at the U!! I'm almost at the information overload here at MLA. Lots of discussion and updates about various cataloging concerns, including new 13 digit ISMN numbers, qualifiers for name headings, changes to LCRI 22.2, form/genre headings, and on and on. Going to scope out the exhibit hall now and will share my findings when I return! (that is, if my flight isn't cancelled...)

As Seen in the Exhibit Hall!
Some interesting things spotted in the exhibit hall at the recent ALA Midwinter conference in Seattle:
--Contemporary World Music (new from Alexander Street Press; to include some 50,000 tracks in popular genres, original liner notes, etc.)
--Classical Scores Library (also new from Alexander Street Press; digital scores starting with the Boosey & Hawkes catalog and will contain contemporary music!)
--Playaways (player with pre-loaded audio content)
--Digital audiobooks (especially looking forward to "checking out" the Shrek d-book with sound effects :) )
-- New interfaces for opac information (and how MARC records can be used in an "untraditional" fashion!)
--Probably the coolest thing: a sneak-peek at the the forthcoming Oxford Music Online portal that will provide access to not only Grove Music Online, but adds other resources (some by additional subscription), more audio and visual clips, etc.
and way too much more to describe here...
Looking forward to MLA to follow up on some of these. Ask Mary if questions!

OLAC 2006

Well, we're back from sunny Arizona and the 12th biennial Online Audiovisual Catalogers conference "Preparing for a Brave New World: Media Cataloging on the Threshold of RDA." Unfortunately we couldn't bring back the warm and sunny weather, but we did return with LOTS of great information!
From Jennifer Bowen's opening keynote address about the future of Resource Description and Access (RDA) to the closing address by John Howard on knowledge organization and marketplace, the conference was chock-full of information pertaining to media cataloging. There were workshops on cataloging videorecordings, maps, sound recordings, metadata (3 workshops: Intro to metadata, VRA Core 4.0/Cataloging Cultural Objects, Audio metadata).
TS staff attending OLAC 2006: Kristi Bergland, Mary Huismann, Stacie Traill, Sharyn Wang

MLA Midwest Chapter meeting
The Midwest Chapter of the Music Library Association met this past week at the grand Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee. The Local Arrangements and Program Committees put together an excellent meeting, starting with the opening reception in which the Milwaukee Mandolin Orchestra entertained us and its director (and former classmate) Paul Ruppa gave an interesting presentation about the group and the origin of mandolin orchestras. Friday's sessions were held at the newly-renovated Milwaukee Public Library, and included a panel presentations on "Library Education for the 21st Century" and "Music Libraries: Friends and Funds." The afternoon sessions included a presentation on Open WorldCat and music in public libraries. The meeting wrapped up Saturday morning with the Chapter business meeting and reference refresher, "Copyright and the Performing Arts." It was great to catch up with colleagues (especially some of my former UWM pals!) who made it to the meeting despite the huge amount of road construction in and around downtown Milwaukee!

MLA 2006

Been walkin' in Memphis...and no, Elvis has not left the building! The 2006 Music Library Association conference, held in Memphis this past week was another truly fabulous meeting. It's such a great opportunity to meet colleagues, learn about what's new and see new products in the exhibit hall. MLA also celebrated its 75th anniversary this year in grand style with several of the group's past president and MLA citation winners present.
I'll be posting some conference reports to the TS website conference page, and would be happy to answer any questions about the conference. Pictures and information are also available from infoshare, the blog sponsored by the Information Sharing Subcommittee of the Reference and Public Services Committee. New this year was a conference wiki to share unofficial news and information about Memphis and MLA.

Reports from 2006 ALA Midwinter

I've posted some reports on the TS "Reports" webpage from the recent ALA Midwinter meeting in San Antonio. There are reports on the progress of RDA (Resource Description and Access), the PCC Participants' Meeting, Authority Control in the Online Environment Interest Group, and the Cataloging & Classification Research Discussion Group. Yet to be posted (hopefully next week) are reports from the OLAC membership & Cataloging Policy Committee (CAPC) meetings and the portion of the Subject Analysis Committee I attended.
The Alexander Street Press booth was abuzz with their new "African American Song" product, which will also be shown at MLA in a month. The exhibits were full of cool new products and services (such as digital labeling for AV products)--way too many to list here!
