THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MUSIC AND THE SENSE OF MOTION will be explored in "Music, Motion, and Subjectivity," a presentation by Eric Clarke, Oxford University. The event, cosponsored by the School of Music and CLA, will include a Q&A. April 7, 3:30-5 p.m., 280 Ferguson Hall.
UNIVERSITY OPERA THEATRE presents Monteverdi's The Coronation of Poppea, in Italian with supertitles; directed by associate professor of music David Walsh, April 10-12, 7:30 p.m., and April 13, 1:30 p.m., Ted Mann Concert Hall. Tickets are $20 ($10 students); call 612-624-2345 or buy online.
Come meet Dorothy, Tin Man, Scarecrow, and Cowardly Lion. University Theatre's production of The Wiz, April 11-19, tells the tale of finding one's place in the world through four characters. The musical, based on L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, includes songs like "Soon As I Get Home," "Believe in Yourself," and "Ease on Down the Road." Directed by Dominic Taylor, with music direction by Sanford Moore and choreography by Uri Sands. Tickets are $12 to $17. Show times vary; see U Theatre.

SPARK Festival of Electronic Music and Arts
From the Brief:
SIXTH ANNUAL SPARK FESTIVAL of Electronic Music and Arts is Feb. 26-March 2. Founded in 1992 by School of Music professor Doug Geers, SPARK brings renowned scholars and performers of electronic music and arts to the West Bank Arts Quarter for lectures, performances, master classes, and multimedia installations. This year, the festival features pop-influenced live electronica performances, with video every night at the Nomad World Pub, among other things. For the complete schedule, see SPARK fest

Art in the Libraries/Gene Gutché Exhibition

Art in the Libraries Exhibit Opening Reception
On Friday September 14 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Music Library (70 Ferguson Hall), there will be an opening reception for the fall "Art in Libraries Exhibition," a collaboration involving the University’s Department of Art, the Music Library, and Wilson Library. This exhibition will feature new two- and three-dimensional art in various media produced by graduate students in the Department of Art.

Minnesota Orchestra at Northrop Plaza

The Minnesota Orchestra will perform a free noon concert on Wednesday, September 12, at Northrop plaza on the Twin Cities campus in Minneapolis to celebrate the start of the U's fall semester and the orchestra's 2007-08 concert season. Assistant conductor Sarah Hatsuko Hicks will lead the orchestra; the program will feature an eclectic mix, concluding with Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. School of Music Contemporary Composers Festival

From March 7 to 12, the School of Music (SOM) on the Twin Cities campus will host the 2006 Contemporary Composers Festival. The event--a mix of free concerts, a film screening, discussions, and lectures--will feature the music of American composer Elliott Carter and musicians from the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and SOM. Kristi's Recital
Kristi Bergland is giving a recital tomorrow evening, Sat. Feb. 5, 7:30 pm at St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral (by Loring Park) in Minneapolis.
She will be singing works by Grieg, Sibelius, Barber and Walton. Admission is free and there will be a reception following.

Sing-along Messiah!
The Dakota Valley Symphony Orchestra and Chorus will present Handel's Messiah next weekend at the Lakeville Area Arts Center, 20965 Holyoke Avenue, Lakeville.
The Friday evening performance is a "sing-along" event--bring your music, or order a vocal score along with your tickets!

VocalEssence Concert, October 10
Come hear Bill sing in an upcoming concert!
He sings with The VocalEssence Ensemble singers, a classical-choral group directed by Philip Brunelle. There is a concert Sunday October 10th at 4:00 at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis.
It should be a very interesting program. VocalEssence will be joining the
St. Olaf Choir (from Northfield), and will be performing two large
works- The Peaceable Kingdom by Randall Thompson, and Mass for double choir by Frank Martin. To complement these two works, the Ensemble singers will be premiering a new piece of music called "Another Spring" by Tom Nazziola, and the St. Olaf Choir will be doing a set of songs also.

The 6th annual Nordic Roots Festival is just around the corner! The Festival begins with Harv and Flukt, continues Saturday with Phønix, Mari Boine Band and Swåp, and wraps up Sunday with Roger Tallroth & Friends, Mats Edén & Tina Quartey and Väsen trio with guests Frigg.
Recordings of many of these performers are available for your listening pleasure in the Music Library.
