New subject headings of interest

As announced in the latest Music Cataloging Bulletin:

Cell phone music [May Subd Geog] (sh2008003963)
(Here are entered compositions not in a specific form or of a specific type consisting of sounds produced by cell phones, and collections of such compositions in several forms or types.)

and

Cell phones as musical instruments [May Subd Geog] (sh2008003962)

These headings replace earlier ones: Cellular telephone music and Cellular telephones as musical instruments. Who says LC doesn't keep up with the times :)

September Highlights

New headings of interest from the September Music Cataloging Bulletin (not a comprehensive list):

Banjo music (Bluegrass)
Guitar music (Heavy metal) also the heading with qualifiers (Soul) and (Swing)
Spring--Songs and music

An editorial decision has been made by CPSO to cancel the headings Piano--Methods (Jazz, [Rock, Bluegrass, etc.]) and Piano--Studies and exercises (Jazz, [Rock, Bluegrass, etc.]) in favor of individually established headings such as Piano--Methods (Honky-tonk) and Piano--Studies and exercises (Boogie woogie).

In addition, the "complex see also notes" (authority record field 360) have been revised for the headings corresponding to these qualifers (e.g., Honky-tonk music, Boogie woogie (Music)).

MLA Bibliographic Control Committee Liaison reports from the ALA annual conference held in June, 2005 also appear in this issue, as well as an invitation to respond to a questionnaire on the use of MARC 21 655 field and "genre" terms for music. This questionnaire was developed by Geraldine Ostrove (CPSO) with input from the BCC Subject Access Subcommittee. Deadline for response is 30 September 2005.
