Elgar's 150th!

Yes, it's that time of year again...
Celebrations for Edward Elgar's 150th anniversary are ramping up! Elgar was born 2 June 1857 in Broadheath, near Worcester (England). His birthplace is now a museum.
Radio station WFMT (Chicago) is broadcasting Elgar's music all day on Friday. BBC3 has loads of programming scheduled, with some additional programming on BBC Four. There's a special webpage for the 150th anniversary, where you can find a list of programs, timeline, list of recordings, and links to other sites of interest (including the Elgar Society webpage)
Enjoy!

Happy Delius Birthday!
Couldn't let today pass by without noting that it's Delius's birthday today...a quick check of Classical Music Library and Naxos Music Library shows lots of tracks to listen to in commemoration of the day. Which I think I'll do...as soon as I finish my ALA conference reports...

Mary's Pick of the Week...Month...Whatever!

To mark the centenary in 2006 of the birth of Elisabeth Lutyens, the
British Library has today launched an online exhibition devoted to the
composer and her music.
The British Library acquired the composer's music manuscripts in 1986, and also
holds related correspondence and sound recordings. The exhibition draws
on some of these, together with privately-owned family photographs.
Click here for more information on Elisabeth Lutyens...

New Music Genre: Wizard Rock
![harrypotters[1].jpeg](http://blog.lib.umn.edu/huism002/musicat/harrypotters%5B1%5D.jpeg)
From American Libraries Direct:
"The Wizard Rock movement and literacy"
A new music genre called Wizard Rock features songs related to the Harry Potter books, played by bands like the Remus Lupins and Harry and the Potters. Josh Bernstein writes: “Almost every one of these bands on their Myspace or website mention that one of their goals is to promote literacy. Some even have links to sites or pdfs you can download explaining how to help promote literacy in your own area....
from Alternative Teen Services, Sept. 8
Read more about Wizard Rock in the wikipedia or about the Wizard Rockumentary
So, far, no LCSH for "wizard rock" but LC does have a minimal record for the Harry and the Potters CD...

Mary's Pick of the Week (Month??)
BBC Radio 3 is going to broadcast a series of concerts from the Delius Festival in Bradford, England. Here's the blurb from the website:
DELIUS IN BRADFORD
Throughout 2006 we have had a continuing theme of British music, and July starts with a special opportunity to appreciate the music of Delius from his home city of Bradford. In six concerts from the St George's Hall, starting on July 3rd, we will be broadcasting a wide range of his music. Tasmin Little has been championing his works in recent years, and she is directing this week-long festival. The music of Delius will be explored in the context of his influences and contemporaries. Delius brings a continental voice to British music, but his music is complemented by our Vaughan Williams symphony cycle which is running throughout Afternoon Performance - also starting on Monday 3rd with his choral Sea Symphony.

Delius Birthday and Festival
Happy Birthday Frederick Delius, on January 29th!
The Delius Society has just released details about registering for the 2006 Annual General Meeting, which will be held in Bradford in conjunction with the 'Delius Inspired' Festival featuring Tasmin Little. The festival is part of a larger event named "Illuminate," celebrating Yorkshire culture in five cities including Bradford, Delius's birthplace. The complete concert program is available at Tasmin's website. For those of us who can't make it to the Festival, BBC Radio 3 will provide broadcasts of the concerts from Bradford (3-8 July) either as live events or deferred relay.

Happy 250th!

January 27 is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's 250th birthday. Here's one Mozart website to get you started: The Mozart Project features a biography, list of compositions, essays, annotated bibliography and links.
More Mozart:
The British Library has mounted a virtual exhibit of Mozart's Musical Diary. You can even turn the pages in
the manuscript, and audio clips enhance the experience.
And for those needing something fun to do on a Friday, check out this: you can put together a model of Mozart's piano! All it takes is some card stock, hobby knife and probably, lots of patience :)

OCLC's Top 1000 List
OCLC has recently published its "Top 1000" list for 2005. There's also an option to list subsets of the complete list by broad subject area, including music materials.
In the number 1 spot on the music list we find Handel's Messiah with 22,206 library holdings and 1522 bibliographic records in OCLC; Messiah is no. 45 on the 2005 complete list. Rounding off the music list is Oklahoma by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein (5302 library holdings and 237 bibliographic records; it's number 993 on the complete list). Scrolling though the list brings out the usual suspects (lots of opera), plus treasures such as "The Twelve Days of Christmas" (no. 17 on the music list and no. 181 on the complete list).
For more information see the Top 1000 page at the OCLC website.

Unfortunately for those of us who must miss this great festival, we can visit the Music Library to find some Celtic music or readings...or try out some online music from Naxos (requires U affiliation)

Mary's Pick of the Week

Still tired from this past weekend's handbell festival held at Martin Luther College in New Ulm. It was quite the experience, over 400 handbell and handchime "ringers," organ, assorted brass players (and audience) crammed into the gym!
And naturally, here's a sampling of some handbell materials in the University Libraries:
CD: Ringing Clear: The Art of Handbell Ringing (Music Library CD-1449)
Score: Vandervelde, Janika. Metaphors for handbells and orchestra (Wilson Library Annex Sub-basement (MA theses) MnU-M 80-152
Books: Camp, John Michael Francis. Bell Ringing: Chimes, Carillons, Handbells: The World of the Bell and the Ringer (Music Library 789.5 C15)
McBride, Michael B. and Marva Baldwin. Meeting the National Standards with Handbells and Handchimes (Music Library Quarto MT 711 .M35 2000)
And some web resources:
The American Guild of English Handbell Ringers is a good starting point. This is the organization that sponsors many educational and performance activities in the U.S.
The major bell manufacturers' websites also have some good information: Malmark, Schulmerich, and Whitechapel.
Finally, here are links to a general bell FAQ and miscellaneous information.

Mary's Pick of the Week

This week is flying by quickly, but I had to give a "Pick of the Week" nod to the BBC3's Composer of the Week show this week featuring Edward Elgar (1857-1934). Programs are available for listening online for one week after the broadcast date.
Also notable is the Elgar Society's webpage, a great source of information about Elgar. There are the usual biographical topics, plus an online newsletter, diary of events, and sound clips from featured recordings.

Mary's Pick of the Week
After a short hiatus, "Pick of the Week" is back!
Check out the cool exhibit at the Goldstein Museum: "Hip Art That's Square: A Survey of Album Covers from the Collection of Richard Shelton." The exhibit runs through 3 April, so you've got a few weeks left to see it! There is also an interactive computer kiosk where one can view one of sixty images, learn more about the album, and hear a song.
From the website: "This exhibition examines the relationships between popular music and the graphic art of its packaging. The show features almost 300 albums from the collector's total library of 18,000+ albums, which spans half of the twentieth century and most musical genres."

Mary's Pick of the Week
This alert was posted recently to the Music Library Association electronic list, and it's quite the site!
MASSIVE = Math and Science Song Information, Viewable Everywhere
http://www.science-groove.org/MASSIVE/
From the homepage:
“The MASSIVE database contains information on over 1700 science and math
songs. Some of these songs are suitable for 2nd graders; others might only
appeal to tenured professors. Some songs have been professionally recorded;
others haven't. Some are quite silly; others are downright serious. MASSIVE
is maintained by Greg Crowther, who is affiliated with the University of
Washington, Science Groove, and the Science Songwriters' Association.
MASSIVE itself is part of the National Science Foundation's National Science
Digital Library and has been featured in the NetWatch section of Science
magazine.”
There'a a companion Internet radio station that is not to be missed:
MASSIVE radio, an Internet radio station devoted entirely to science/math songs

OCLC Research Activities and IFLA's Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records
Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) is a 1998 recommendation of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) to restructure catalog databases to reflect the conceptual structure of information resources. FRBR uses an entity-relationship model of metadata for information objects, instead of the single flat record concept underlying current cataloging standards. The page authors note that if FRBR is fully implemented, it would "produce the biggest change cataloging has seen in the last century."
This webpage gives a summary of OCLC's research activities related to FRBR, plus links to the various research project sites, background information on FRBR, and a short list of publications and presentations.
