The historic Inver Grove Heights swing bridge started on fire Thursday, which hampered the renovation project on the bridge that started in April.
The 116-year-old bridge may have caught fire because of welding sparks of workers working on the renovation and construction of the bridge, the Star Tribune said.
The bridge was supposed to open in three weeks as a public pier. Authorities said the fire was worsened by weather conditions Thursday afternoon, according to WCCO.
The bridge began falling apart a few years ago after it was closed in 1999 due to safety concerns, WCCO said.
The bridge, built in 1894, will have to be re-evaluated for saftey after the fire damage, the Star Tribune said.
