Trial Continues for Man Accused of Killing Toddler

A dead toddler's mother testified Friday against her husband who is accused of killing her 17-month-old son in the couple's home near Northfield, Wisc.
Melissa Hokanson, 19, testified against her husband, Tylar Hokanson, 24, in court Friday for his accusation of killing her 17-month-old son, Nicholas Miller, the Star Tribune said.
Nicholas reportedly died of injuries due to being shaken and suffered brain bleeding, a severed spine, cuts, bruises, and had fluid in his lungs, the Star Tribune said.
The June 19, 2009 incident led to the death of Nicholas, who stopped breathing and moving in the days in between the incident and the boy's June 23, 2009 death, the Pioneer Press said.
Hokanson faces three charges of first-degree murder and three charges of second-degree murder, the Star Tribune said.
Nicholas's autopsy report also showed that he suffered five broken ribs in the weeks before the incident and fractures to his clavicle in the months prior to the incident, the Star Tribune said.
Hokanson's stepdaughter did not have injuries but the couple's 6-week-old baby suffered similar fractures to the ribs as Nicholas, the Star Tribune said.
If Hokanson is convicted of first-degree murder, he will mandatorily be imprisoned for life with the possibility of parole in 30 years, the Pioneer Press said.
