Trapped miner believed dead

An Idaho man is believed to be dead after getting trapped in the mine he was working in when it collapsed, CNN reported.

Hecla Mining Company changed the mission into a recovery mission since they believe teh man is dead, King5 News reported.

Miner Larry "Pete" Marek was in the mine when it collapsed nine days ago.

Hecla said they are concerned with recovering Marek's body and keeping other employees safe while working.

South Dakota inmates accused of killing guard

Two inmates in Sioux Falls wrapped plastic shrink wrap around a 63-year-old guard's head, took his uniform and left him to die, the Pioneer Press reported.

Eric Robert and Rodney Berget, both 48, used the guard's uniform in an unsuccessful attempt to get past security, according to the Star Tribune.

The two inmates were charged with first-degree murder.

They are being held without bond.

Robert was wearing the uniform and pushing a cart with two boxes on in, where Berget was hiding inside.

When Robert failed to swipe his electronic ID card when exiting an area, officers became suspicious and called for more guards.

The two inmates are not allowed contact to each other.

Tornado destroys parts of small Iowa town

A tornado struck Mapleton, a town in western Iowa, destroying 20 percent of the town, the Star Tribune reported.

Twelve to 15 blocks were destroyed in the southwestern area of the town, according to the Pioneer Press.

The tornado hit at 7:20 p.m. on Saturday.

It had wind speeds from 105 to 135 mph, Monona County Sheriff Jeff Pratt said.

Homes and buildings were destroyed and power lines went down.

Major flooding in Minnesota expected

Widespread flooding across Minnesota is still occuring, according to a flood forecast the National Weather Service issued on Friday, Fox 9 News reported.

The Red River Valley is expected to get major flooding.

Grey Cloud Island Township has already experienced damage from flooding, according to the Star Tribune.

Houses near the shore of the Mississippi river have been sandbagged for damage prevention.

The biggest concern of the Grey Cloud Island residents is that bridges will be washed away.

7.2 earthquake hits Japan

A tsunami warning has been issued in Japan after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Wednesday, according to CNN.

The center of the earthquake 105 miles off the coast of Honshu, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

There were no immediate reports of damage in the proximity of the earthquake, Yahoo News reported.

The earthquake occurred 8.8 miles under the earth's surface.

A 6.3 magnitude shock occurred after the initial earthquake.

Man shoots himself outside police department

A man, 70, shot himself in the parking lot behind the St. Anthony Police Department Tuesday, according to the Star Tribune.

Robert Hockert parked his SUV and then got out and shot himself in the chest with a 12-gauge shotgun, the Pioneer Press reported.

Hockert has a history of "business setbacks" in california, the Star Tribune said.

Hockert moved back to Minnesota because he grew up here and has grown children and other relatives here.

Highways dangerous for state troopers

State troopers are getting hit on the road more than double the amount of last year, the Star Tribune reports.

Eight state troopers were struck by cars in the past three days, according to the Pioneer Press.

These crashes have been occurring at a high rate, making state troopers ask drivers to slow down and pay attention.

Several troopers have been hit while in their squad cars.

Each crash creates several issues for the state troopers, including problems with the patrol's "staffing, fleeting and finances," the Star Tribune reported.

Minnesota tax hike for big earners

Governor Mark Dayton plans to decrease the state's deficit of $6.2 billion by more than half in the next two years by increasing income taxes of the top 5 percent of earners, the Star Tribune reported.

Dayton outlined a two year budget of $37 billion dollars today.

Dayton described that his budget plan is meant to "keep my promises I made to the people of Minnesota last fall," according to the Pioneer Press.

Ninety-five percent of Minnesota will experience no tax increases, according to Dayton's office.

Dayton planned $775 billion in cuts for health and welfare programs.

He also proposed a Minnesotan property tax on houses greater in value than one million dollars.

TV executive found guilty for beheading wife

Muzzammil "Mo" Hassan has been found guilty of second-degree murder Monday, CNN reported.

Hassan has been convicted of stabbing his wife, Aasiya Hassan, and then beheading her in 2009 after she filed for divorce, according to BBC News .

Hassan, founder of a television network aimed to fight Muslim stereotypes, could face a lifetime sentence.

Hassan was arrested in 2009 in Buffalo, New York, after reporting to the police that his wife was dead.

Ohio train derailment causes explosion

A freight train carrying chemicals derailed Sunday, causing the explosion of at least 15 tanker cars, the Star Tribune reported.

The freight train derailed about 50 miles south of Toledo, Ohio, according to the Pioneer Press.

There have been no injuries reported.

About 20 homes in the area were evacuated.

The train was headed from Chicago to North Carolina with freights full of ethanol.

There is no answer as to why the freight train derailed.

St. Paul driver dead after crash

The driver was killed in a rollover crash while heading south on Hwy. 61 Sunday, State Patrol said.

The person lost control of a 1996 Acura Integra at about 6:15 a.m. according to the Pioneer Press.

The vehicle crashed into a tree and then rolled over, ejecting and killing the driver, the Star Tribune reported.

There were no other passengers in the vehicle.

The name of the driver will be released Monday.
