Maria Kroupina Gives Child Mental Health Grand Rounds

Maria Kroupina, PhD, child psychologist and director of the child mental health program for the International Adoption Clinic, gave Pediatric Grand Rounds on September 7, 2011.

Her talk summarized research findings regarding impacts of traumatic early experience on cognitive and social-emotional development, and defined principles for mental health clinical practice for young children with a history of early adversity. Celebration for Dr. Paul Bangirana

On March 9, 2011, the Makerere University/UMN research team celebrated Dr. Paul Bangirana's successful attainment of a pediatric neuropsychology PhD from Makerere University and the Karolinska Institute. Sponsored in part by a grant from SIDA, and in part by the University of Minnesota, Dr. Bangirana became the first Ugandan to obtain a PhD in pediatric neuropsychology. Dr. Bangirana has worked as a part of the Makerere University/UMN cerebral malaria project since 2003 and is the author of numerous papers on cognitive testing and outcomes in Ugandan children after infectious diseases such as malaria and HIV.

2nd Annual Midwest Global Health Education Consortium

The 2nd Annual Midwest Global Health Education Consortium meeting was held in Minneapolis, MN, Oct 6-7, 2011. The Consortium is comprised of pediatrics and family medicine global health residency program directors from Medical College of Wisconsin, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Minnesota, Mayo Medical School, and Northwestern University, and meets annually to discuss collaborations and sharing of resources across programs.
