Jenn's Classroom Newsletter
May 2010

Happy May! The session has flown by and it's hard to believe that summer is right around the corner. The beautiful weather has allowed us to extend our classroom into the great outdoors. The students have enthusiastically expanded their explorations and investigations into the natural world as they search for bugs on the playground, discuss where snow goes when it melts, and explore the many transformations that come with spring! During the final five weeks of the session, teachers will provide opportunities for children to deepen their explorations. We will be closely observing how children explore and experiment with the open ended materials we have provided, and we will ask though-provoking questions that challenge children to describe, predict, and reflect as they continue to develop their higher level thinking skills. We hope to further promote new and creative thinking by providing children with a number of teacher-directed opportunities to utilize their newly acquired knowledge. Children will be able to plant seeds and monitor their growth, create their own narratives as they write or dictate stories, and explore the community on field trips. These opportunities will have a strong focus on science and literacy concepts and will provide an intellectual challenge for our students.

Enjoy the sunshine!

~Marie

January Newsletter
Jenn's Classroom

Hello Everyone!

I hope you have all enjoyed your break and are getting ready for the classroom fun to start again soon. I would like to update you on a few changes taking place as we begin our next session. Starting in January, both classrooms will begin class outside on the playground. The children will have opportunities to engage in special activities and participate in outdoor explorations as they start their day. This means that your child should arrive at school dressed and ready for the cold weather and snow. We will spend time embracing nature and the wonderful outdoors prior to coming into the classroom each day (weather permitting). In addition, our 3:15 dismissal will now be taking place from the classroom/hallway entrance of the building. It may take some time to work out kinks that may arise with the implementation of a new schedule, so please bear with us. We are optimistic and eager to see how this change might enhance the children's overall daily experiences.

I would also like to introduce you to the new teaching team in our classroom. As you already know, I will be the new lead teacher in the classroom beginning in January. Ross and I will be co-teaching and sharing several of the responsibilities throughout the daily routine. Marie will also play an intricate role as the assistant teacher in our classroom. We are all very excited to work collaboratively and provide an enriching environment for your children to enjoy as they learn and grow.

A Few Words about Ourselves

Marie
I am in my first year of the Early Childhood/Early Childhood Special Education Initial Licensure/Masters program here at the U of M, and I am really excited to be back in the Twin Cities! I grew up in St. Paul in the Saint Anthony Park neighborhood and left Minnesota to get a B.A in English from Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. Since graduating I have lived in Grinnell, Madison, Iowa City, and Sydney, Australia working with children in a number of ways. Most recently I lived in Wisconsin and was the lead teacher and athletics coordinator at the Little Explorer's Preschool in Madison. After completing my program I hope to work as an early childhood/early childhood special education teacher in a preschool classroom. In my free time I enjoy reading, writing, traveling, and coaching and playing basketball.

Ross
Hello everyone! Welcome back from the long break. I'm sure you are just as excited as the children are to get back to school! This is my 6th year of being a part of the Lab School Team, however my first every working double duty! I'm looking forward to working with both groups, and interested in observing how two groups of children use the same materials/environments differently. I'm a true Twin City-ian, growing up in the northwest suburbs and living in scattered areas of Minneapolis and St Paul while attending the U of M. I received my undergraduate and master's degrees here at the university, both in early childhood education. I love finding/listening to new music, making/seeing art, spending time outdoors, working on the seemingly never-ending to-do list that accompanies owning a new home, riding my bike (which I do nearly every day to and from work...even in the winter!), as well as practicing yoga. I've also recently started to develop a bit of a green thumb, and would love to chat/share tips about plants and gardening!

Jenn
I would like to share with you a bit about myself. I completed my undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education here at the University of Minnesota in May 2008. Recently, I completed my final student teaching experience in the M.Ed./Initial Licensure Program for Early Childhood Education/Early Childhood Special Education. I currently reside in south Minneapolis and I'm the proud owner of two loving cats. I enjoy reading for pleasure, taking long walks, taking camping trips, and catching up with close friends during my spare time. I have always held a special place in my heart for young children and feel privileged to be a part of their early learning experiences. I am extremely excited to be working at the Lab School and look forward to developing relationships with you and your children in the days to come.

Dear Families,

Can you believe there are only two more weeks of school before break? The fall semester has gone so fast. The classroom has been a busy and exciting place: children have been engaged in rich dramatic play and our small groups went on several field trips in the community. Last week Jessica's food small group took a field trip to the restaurant Ōm in downtown Minneapolis, and got a tour from the chef (Carolina's dad!). This week, Emily's music small group visited the MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis and had a private music class. This coming Wednesday the animal small group will be taking a trip to Como Zoo to conclude their exploration of animal habitats. In the classroom, children planted lettuce and lima bean seeds in dirt and discussed how plants grow. Children also started to work with clay, and will continue to explore clay techniques next week. At the water table, children determined if objects float or sank, and recorded their observations on a chart. This activity introduced children to the idea of forming and testing hypotheses and continued to expand their knowledge of the properties of water. Children's sociodramatic play has also really expanded in the past few weeks; children have become veterinarians, doctors, construction workers, and firefighters as they work on communication, sharing, and creative skills in the dramatic play and block areas.

Small Groups Update:

Music/Movement: The music/movement small group went on a field trip to MacPhail Center for Music in downtown Minneapolis. During our exploratory music class, the children played percussive instruments and the autoharp. We also created an art project, participated in creative movement activities and concluded with a parachute game. The children expanded on what we had talked about in our small group meetings about tone, rhythm and pitch by participating in all these activities.

Food: Over the past two weeks, our group has been discussing restaurants. We read books about restaurants and talked our own experiences at restaurants. We talked about different parts of a restaurant, such as the dining room and kitchen, and discussed different jobs at a restaurant. Our field trip to Ōm was very exciting! After putting our coats in the coat check and getting a coat check number, we went into the kitchen. We saw a big tandoor oven, smelled spices, squirted a giant hose in the sink, saw a huge mixer, an oven, and walked into a huge refrigerator. We saw the storeroom and soda machine. Then, children drew their favorite part of the kitchen and were treated to delicious cookies and fresh naan bread. This week, children have been representing their knowledge of restaurants by playing restaurant in the classroom. Children have taken on the roles of cooks, waiters/waitresses, and customers. Next week we will have cooking projects to wrap up our food small group.

Animals: Children expanded their discussion of animal habitats to the classroom pets. After examining the rats, the cockroaches, and the crayfish, children talked about what things the animals had in their habitats. Then, armed with magnifying glasses, the children headed out to the small playground to find signs of wild animal habitats.

End of term party:

We have had such a wonderful time working with all of the children and watching them grow, learn, and build friendships. To say goodbye to Nyna and the student teachers and also celebrate the end of a great semester, please mark your calendars for our last day of school event! On Thursday, December 3rd at 2:15, we will be having a party with a special snack and a sing-along. Family members are invited! Everyone will get a chance to meet Jenn, the new lead teacher, at the sing-along party. You will probably also see Jenn in the classroom during the last week of school as she visits and gets to know the children.

Thanks so much and have a great holiday weekend,
Jessica

Dear families,

The semester is going by so fast! We have just completed our seventh week and what a joy it has been to witness the children forming meaningful relationships with peers and teachers! Our exploration of seeds has continued at the science table as children have cut open squash, apples, green peppers and other fruits and vegetables. This has led children to discuss how to plant seeds and what they will need to grow. Children have also enjoyed exploring the properties of water at the water table! With the addition of measuring containers, funnels, and water wheels, children are able to freely explore and share ideas and discoveries with one another. Free play continues to be a time where teachers notice children's changing interests and curiosities and integrate them into future planning.

Small Group Updates
Music/Movement: What an active group! The children have discussed how music can sound differently. One of our favorite activities is creative movement using streamers. The children have noticed that fast music is often loud, slow music is often softer, and some music even combines the two! Children have also enjoyed singing favorite songs such as Finger Family, Five Green and Speckled Frogs, and Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. The exploration of real musical instruments has also been of great interest! The children have explored holding, and creating original music on the guitar and violin. We saw how both of these instruments have many physical similarities, but are different in how they are held and played. Furthermore, the children were fascinated by comparing a child's violin and bow with the full-sized instrument.
One of the greatest advantages of the small group setting is seeing how the children are getting to know one another! Relationships are fostered as children explore common interests.

Food: In the food small group, we have been exploring different types of vegetables. We peeled, chopped and looked at them under magnifying glasses. The children then sketched them in their journals. We discussed the textures and smells of the vegetables, as well as different ways we could cook them. We also talked about how they grow in gardens or on the farm, and whether they grow above ground or underground. We are starting to discuss restaurants, such as the different areas and jobs in a restaurant, and appliances used in a restaurant. Next Wednesday we will be taking a field trip to Om, a new Indian restaurant in downtown Minneapolis, where Carolina's dad (the chef) will give us a tour.

Animals: We have been looking at tiger pictures, acting like tigers, and seeing what humans can do that tigers cannot. Now we will move into other jungle animals and explore that kind of habitat.

Upcoming Dates of Importance
**Nyna will be out of town Thursday, November 19 - Monday, November 23
**There is no school Thursday, November 26 due to Thanksgiving break.

Thank-you!
Emily

Classroom Newsletter
Dear families, It has been such a joy to see the children getting more comfortable with each other and the classroom. They have quickly become accustomed to our daily routines! Even when the schedule changes, has it has done due to weather during the last couple weeks; the children have really gone with the flow. Despite not being outside as much as we want to, we have brought a lot of nature inside to explore. Leaves, twigs, and berries have been used to paint with and on as well as to make play dough habitats. Many children are also exploring the pumpkins, squashes, and gourds at the science table. There has been a lot of dissection and discussion about what is inside these vegetables. The addition of the water table has brought more children together in parallel play where they can share ideas and make connections with each other. More friendships are forming and we are helping to support these new relationships by drawing attention to their similar interests. It is so rewarding to make connections with each child and learn more about what they are interested in. During free play we see their interests and curiosities which help us to plan activities in our classroom accordingly. Our small groups will follow the same philosophy of allowing the children's interests to guide the activities. It is sure to be an exciting fall!
Parent volunteers

We would love to have your help in our classroom. Books, songs, and stories can be brought to share or just come as you are. The children love to show what they know and what they do in class! So, if you are able, please come and spend some time in our classroom.

Homework Notebooks

On Thursdays, homework notebooks will come home along with an assignment. Please bring these back on the following Monday.
Also, please remember to bring your family pictures in. The children love to share stories about their families and they are curious about the families of their classmates.

Small groups

Our small groups have begun! We are just beginning to zero in on our groups interests in music, cooking, and animals. The children are excited to go to their small group areas to learn more about these topics and discuss their common interests.

Fall clothing

It is getting colder and has been pretty windy these last few weeks. We want to be able to spend more time outside as the children really love to be out on the playground! Please remember to pack and label warm outer wear for your child as this helps us to get outside as quickly as possible. Hats, mittens, and boots are really great for these colder and wet days and help the children to play comfortably outside.

It has been very exciting to see the children enjoying each other and I am really looking forward to getting to know them better.
Thank you, Lisa

CLASSROOM NEWS

Nyna's Class September 25, 2009

Dear Parents:

School is finally getting underway! I greatly appreciate you allowing me to come to your homes and meet you and your children. These visits really help the children gain a sense of comfort at school by recognizing at least one friendly face. Still, there are a few children who may take longer to feel comfortable in this new environment. I will be looking to each child to determine what kind of support they need. Please let me know right away if your child seems unhappy about coming to school. There are many available strategies that we can use together to help give your child the extra support that may be needed in the first few weeks of school.

I am eagerly getting to know the children as unique individuals and am putting forth a great deal of effort into facilitating their adjustment to school. While we have only had two days, the children appear to be comfortable with the routines. I look forward to all of them getting to know one another. The teachers will be watching for themes in the children's play that we will incorporate into our curriculum planning. Having the curriculum reflect children's interests is a very powerful way to give children ownership of their school experience.

Each Monday I will email out a copy of our weekly curriculum plan so you can keep informed about our classroom activities. If you do not get the emails, or would like a hard copy, please let me know. Each child has a folder for take home items such as research forms, permission slips, art projects, etc... I will try to empty the folders into your child's backpack or give you the items when you drop off your child. Please read the weekly plan so you will have an idea of what is being planned for the children to explore and learn about while they are at school. By reading about the teacher's version of what we are doing you may mistakenly believe that your child will know all about these plans and will be able to discuss them with you. Unfortunately the teacher's plans are usually quite different than children's perceptions of what they do at school. If you read that we are "exploring colors" at school as our science emphasis, the children may be able to tell you that they painted with red paint or looked through "rainbow glasses" or put colored shapes on the light box. It takes time, repetition and much discussion for some of the concepts we are focusing on to begin to make sense to children in the same way they do to adults. Nevertheless, keep on asking children about their activities at school, using the curriculum plan as your guide. The more specific your questions are, the more likely your child will be able to remember and talk about their afternoon. I will also make phone calls in the late afternoons if I need to let you know about something that occurred during the day that I was not able to tell you about at pick-up time. If you would like to call me in the afternoons please call the school office at 612-624-9543, if you are calling to report your child's absence or you want to talk to me before school starts, please call this number. You may also email me at mcde0035@umn.edu.

Meet the teachers!

It is fun to be able to talk to your children about school and one of the topics they enjoy talking about is their teachers!! Here is a little bit of information to help you get to know us:

Nyna Anderson

I could not be more excited to be back at the Lab School again this year! As some of you know, I co-taught in the afternoon three years ago and taught the afternoon class last year. I am also a graduate of the program here where I completed my Early Childhood Education teaching license and my Masters of Education. I live in Saint Paul Park with my family. My son Christopher is six and began first-grade this year. He has recently taken up skateboarding and puts my balance to shame. My daughter Aurora will be three in November and loves everything Dora and Princess. She also enjoys copying her brother's every move and walking him to school every morning. She believes herself ready for kindergarten. My husband Andy is an engineer at 3M and likes spending as much time as possible outdoors. We also have a cat named Mr. Clean and Newfoundland dog named Molly. As for myself, I was born in Iowa where I lived until I was fifteen. My family then moved to Albert Lea where I finished high school and met Andy. After graduation I attended the University of Minnesota and eventually found my calling as a teacher. Currently I enjoy running and am training to run the Twin Cities Marathon. Come out and cheer on October 4th. Preferably at the beginning miles when I look better!

Lisa
Hey, my name is Lisa. I live in Plymouth with my daughter Corinna, who is 9 years old. We also have a toy poodle named Gracie. I love dogs so much that I write and draw dog stories. This is my last semester at the U of M. My major is in Early Childhood Education. I've been teaching at a variety of preschools for ten years. I will be moving to Arizona by the spring where I hope to get a teaching position in an American Indian reservation.
Emily
Hello families! My name is Emily and I will one of the teachers in our classroom. I am so excited! I am currently an undergraduate student in the Elementary Education program here at the U. I will graduate this December and move onto the licensing program next year. I live in Coon Rapids with my parents, my sister, Anna, and our four pets. I look forward to meeting everyone and having lots of fun at school as we learn and explore new things!
Jessica
I live in Richfield with my boyfriend, yellow lab and cat. I got my BA from the University of Minnesota in Cultural Studies, and then got an MA in Film Studies from the University of Chicago. I am completing my Med in Elementary Education with a preprimary specialty.

Reminders and Announcements

Family Board

I would like to create a family board that includes a family photo for each child and teacher. This helps to create a sense of belonging in a community. I will be sending home a short form with questions about your family for you to fill out with your child. If you have already given me a family photo I will attach it your sheet when you return it to school. If you have not given me a photo yet, you can attach it before sending it back to school.

Question of the Day

As your child comes to school each afternoon you may notice that there is a question of the day on the white board outside the classroom. I began doing this after attending a training session on Responsive Classroom. I was also involved in this teaching approach, which puts an emphasis on both academic and social-emotional growth of children, during my primary student teaching experience. The question of the day is based off one component of "morning meeting", or in our case large group. The question will pertain to something that is occurring in our classroom and will often be discussed during large group. It also builds on a variety of skills including literacy, math and social discussions.

Parent Advisory Committee Meeting

The first meeting of our Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) is scheduled for Tuesday October 6th from 7-8:30. PAC is a group of parents working to support the school in a variety of ways and is open to EVERYONE. It is NOT an elected board. We need your support! Please come and get involved in your child's school.

Parent Conferences

I will be having parent conferences beginning the week of October 19th. During these conferences we will discuss school adjustment and establish goals for your child. I will ask you to fill out a specific list of questions to help guide the conference. These conferences will take place at school in the late morning and evenings. I will have sign-up notes go home. While I understand difficulty in finding child care, it is often easier to conduct these conferences without children present. If you are unable to coordinate child care please let me know in advance so we can make arrangements.

Parent Involvement

I appreciate any parent involvement in the classroom. I understand that parking, work and family schedules make this difficult. Despite these factors, I want to encourage all parents to think of ways they could make contributions to our classroom activities. From simply coming in and spending time with your child, to helping with projects or sharing a special interest with the whole class...we want you!! I will be reading the parent volunteer forms that you filled out and contacting you about opportunities. There are many different ways to be involved in your child's classroom and each one is needed and appreciated by myself and the children.

Holiday Celebrations

As a general rule, we do not have special holiday "parties" at school. We do acknowledge the holidays that families in our class celebrate in a low-key, child-centered manner. We have appropriate stories, art materials and special snacks, which help children understand some of the cultural traditions that go along with celebrations. We welcome parents to come in and share their families' special traditions with the class. I will look to the children as to how interested they are in these types of holiday activities. On Halloween we will not have the children dress in costumes as that usually causes so much excitement and confusion that the afternoon becomes chaotic.

Birthdays

When it is your child's birthday (or any day you and your child would like to celebrate) we welcome a special snack and have a small celebration at school. The State of Minnesota requires that all snacks be either store bought or prepared at school. I invite you to come to school on your child's birthday (or any day you would like to) and prepare a special snack with us! (This is also usually cheaper than buying pre-made snack.) While we do not have any peanut allergies we ask that the snack not contain any traces of nuts. In line with our nutrition program we also ask that you bring in a snack that is healthy. If you need suggestions for a snack please talk to me and we will figure something out. There will also be a list posted on the parent board with snack suggestions.

Extra Clothes

It is helpful if each child has an extra set of labeled clothes in his/her cubby. I have found it most convenient to have the extra clothes in a large zip lock bag, this keeps extra clothes from finding their way into other children's cubbies We have some extras, but not enough to go around five classrooms. Also if your child does wear school clothes home, please return them. If you have any clothing at home that you are ready to "give up" let me know.

Bringing Toys from Home

I have discussed with most of you my thoughts regarding toys from home. Generally, I find security items, such as a special stuffed animal or a blanket to be helpful in getting children adjusted to school, although it is best if these are left in the cubbies. It could be very distressing to a child to lose their "lovey". It seems amazing that this could really happen in the classroom but it does. Sometimes children really want to share a favorite book with the class, and this works out well. Once we begin project work, children will have the chance to share items that relate to topics we are "studying" in our small groups. Toys from home that can cause problems at school would be those that are very attractive to others, such as action figures, special dolls, mechanical toys and cars, anything breakable, etc... We also have a NO WEAPONS policy in our school. Please do not let your child bring these kinds of things to school. Thank you for your understanding!

Appropriate clothing and shoes

Children get dirty. They learn through touching and feeling the world around them. Please keep this in mind when dressing your child for school. While we wear smocks for many messy activities, they do not keep all the glue, paint and markers off of clothing. So please dress your child in clothing that is fit to be worn in a preschool environment. In addition, please ensure your child's clothes and shoes are suitable for safely running, jumping climbing and all other physical activities.

Please provide me with any feedback throughout the year; I look forward to making this a successful year together!

Sincerely,

Nyna
