CARPATHIAN FOLK FESTIVAL

GET READY FOR A WEEK LONG FESTIVITIES AND FUN!

DANCE WORKSHOPS & DANCE HOUSE

Live Music and Teaching by Düvö Ensemble
Location: St.Mary Romanian Church Hall (854 Woodbridge Street, St.Paul Minnesota)
Dance Workshops, Adults: 9:30am-&1pm, Children 4:30pm
Come for the day. Take a turn on the dance floor, learn folksongs and don't miss sampling the home-made food and drink being served all day in the Hungarian Tavern on the lower level. Instructions will begin with basics, so come join the fun even if you have never folk danced before. Having a partner is not required.

Children Workshop 4:30pmThe Kids' Folk Dance Workshop will be held from 4:30pm on October 1, 2011 (Saturday). The session will be led by the Hungarian visitor artists Kata&Pal Mlinar (professional Hungarian Folk Dancers and instructors) and the Düvő Band!

Taste of Northeast Festival

St. Mary's Orthodox Cathedral (1701 5th St NE, Mpls) will be sponsoring their first annual Taste of Northeast Festival on Saturday, October 1, from 11 am to 8 pm. It's an event to gather the community and enjoy great food, music, entertainment, games and fun--there will be something for all ages!

Minnesota History Day prizes

The theme for 2012 History Day is "Revolution, Reform and Reaction in History." Friends of the IHRC will be offering three topical cash prizes of $100 each for the best Minnesota History Day projects that apply the theme to immigration history. FFI

Invitation to attend the Romanian Genealogical Society

You are invited to attend the inaugural meeting of the Romanian Genealogical Society in Room 218 of the Minnesota Genealogical Society on Saturday, November 19, 2011 from 1 to 4 p.m.

After a talk by Vicki Albu on "Early Romanian Immigration to the Twin Cities," members are invited to discuss their Romanian heritage and the genealogical research challenges they face. Bring old photos if you have them. We will elect officers, brainstorm activities, and plan a meeting calendar for 2012. If you have any questions or to sign up for a mailing list, please contact Vicki Young Albu by e-mail at young754@umn.edu.

If you have Romanian ancestors or if you are interested in sharing and learning about Romanian family history research, you will want to become a member of the Romanian Genealogical Society. We plan to have a quarterly newsletter and 3-4 meetings per year. In the future we hope to also have a web site and a library collection.

MGS's 4th Annual North Star Conference

Friends of the IHRC Annual Meeting, Dinner and Program

The annual meeting of the Friends of the IHRC will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2011, 6:00pm - 9:00pm, at the Minnesota Humanities Center, 987 Ivy Avenue East, St. Paul, MN 55106. The cost for dinner and the program is $25 per person, advance reservations are required (see information below).

This year's program will feature a report by historians Dr. Marilyn Chiat, Professor Jeanne Halgren Kilde and doctoral candidate Anduin Wilhide on their research into religious congregations and houses of worship formed by early settlers in nine neighborhoods developed along the Mississippi River between 1849 and 1924. The research project explores such themes as community creation, ethnicity and identity, relationships among congregations, intra-congregational interactions, the role of houses of worship, and social class structures. The goal of the project is to document the long heritage of religious diversity that has been central to this area's growth and development.
