Adriatic islands played an important role in ancient navigation and economy. The centrality of the Adriatic Sea for travel and exchange between the Mediterranean and European societies conditioned the life and economy of the islanders. The island's landscape and seascape and the nature of settlements were dynamic and responded to changing historical scenarios.

The island of St. Clement, with its agricultural land, deep bays with good anchorage and resources for salt production and stone quarrying has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Geophysical survey and excavation conducted on a Roman villa in Soline Bay since 2007 have shown the evidence of multi-period occupation, from the Hellenistic period to Late Antiquity. With the perspective of island archaeology and interdisciplinary approach, our international team studies the island's society in the context of maritime culture and patterns of regional and long-distance connectivity.

Our project is contributing to the preservation of Croatian cultural and archaeological heritage to the local community development.

2012 Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival Set for April 12 - May 3, 2012

The largest annual film event in the Upper Midwest returns...

The Film Society of Minneapolis St. Paul announces the 2012 Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival, returning to the five screens of the St. Anthony Main Theatre April 12 through May 3. The program of this exciting three-week celebration of independent filmmaking from around the globe will include some 250 documentary, narrative, and short films from more than 60 countries, visits from numerous international filmmakers and celebrities, and a host of gala events, parties, and receptions.

The Festival lineup includes a Spotlight on the Middle East highlighting the current rich mix of films coming out of Israel, many Arab countries including those in North Africa, and Turkey, long known as the gateway from East to West - curated by Alissa Simon Senior Programmer at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Also included is the always highly anticipated MINNESOTA-Made Showcase returning with great offerings from our own back yard - curated by Tom DeBiaso Professor of Media Arts at MCAD.

In addition, and in recognition of the 50th anniversary of The Film Society this year, Festival fare will include a retrospective highlighting favorite films from the last half-century, and a look forward to the next 50 years of innovative Film Society programming.

Save the date - Saturday Evening, April 21 - for our 50th Celebration Bash! The Festival will also stage an array of panels, discussions, presentations and special events including Opening and Closing Night Galas, three MINNESOTA-Made parties, live music events.

Early Bird Festival Titles:

Andrew Bird: Fever Year - Dir. Xan Aranda - Documentary - USA
Director Xan Aranda documents the culminating months of one of acclaimed musician Andrew Bird's most rigorous years of touring, featuring music steeped appearances from MN native Martin Dosh, and riveting live performance footage. Director present. Musicians invited.

Elena - Dir. Andrei Zvyaginstev - Narrative - RUSSIA
With a nod to classic noir, this impressive drama from Russia's Andrei Zvyaginstev (The Return) is an outstanding Russian drama of fractured families, money and quiet desperation. 2011 Special Jury Prize at Un Certain Regard. One of 2011's most accomplished films from any country. Hollywood Reporter.

Free Men - Dir. Ismaël Ferroukhi - Narrative - ALGERIA/FRANCE
Inspired by real events in WWII German-occupied Paris, a young unemployed Algerian named Younes (played by break-out star, Tahar Rahim) transforms from a politically uninformed immigrant into a full-fledged member of the Resistance.

Majority - Dir. Seren Yüce - Narrative - TURKEY
Premiered at the Venice International Film Festival where it won the award for best debut film. One of the best Turkish films of the year. With impeccable narration and no-nonsense style this moral tale explores the timeless shadow of fathers over sons.

Nuit #1 - Dir. Anne Émond - Narrative - QUEBEC, CANADA
In this Festival circuit darling, two twenty-something Montrealers have a chance encounter at a rave that leads to bold explorations of intimacy, love, and honesty. A dazzling study of a one night stand from first-time director Anne Émond. Director and star present.

Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth - Dir. Jennifer Baichwal - Documentary - CANADA/USA/ARMENIA
Acclaimed author Margaret Atwood's visionary work Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth is the basis for this riveting and poetic documentary on "debt" in its various forms--societal, personal, environmental, spiritual, criminal, and of course, economic. (Zeitgeist Films)

Restoration - Dir. Joseph Madmony - Narrative - ISRAEL
An Israeli film more about the internal state of its characters than the state of the country, Restoration is the kind of small-scale, well-crafted story that used to be a staple of European cinema and is rarely seen nowadays, at least in the U.S. It's a potent formula in the hands of fine actors and a director like Yossi Madmony. Hollywood Reporter.

The Salt of Life - Dir. Gianni Di Gregorio - Narrative - ITALY
In his warm and witty follow-up to his 2010 sleeper hit Mid-August Lunch, writer-director-actor Gianni Di Gregorio has created another sparkling comic ode to the ladies in his life--but this time he plays a middle-aged retiree who has become invisible to all distaff Romans, regardless of age or relation. (Lincoln Center)

Woman in the Fifth - Dir. Pawel Pawlikowski - Narrative - FRANCE/POLAND/UK
American novelist Tom Ricks (Ethan Hawke) arrives in Paris determined to renew a relationship with his estranged wife and daughter. Then Tom meets Margit (Kristin Scott Thomas)... This hypnotic, sensual and romantic film sports a lusciousness that's as unfashionable as it is pleasurable.

The Film Society of Minneapolis St. Paul presents the very best of national and international independent cinema on Screen 3 at St. Anthony Main Theatre, 115 SE Main Street, Minneapolis, MN 55414. www.mspfilmsociety.org

The Habsburg lands, from which the Czechs, Moravians, Slovaks, and Germans emigrated, mainly in the second half of the 19th century, were going through major economic, demographic, social, and cultural transformations. Genealogical Resources for German-American Ancestry, Online and Off
Instructor: Lori Bessler

This hands-on computer workshop will help the family researcher
identify resources that are found on the Web as well as those that are
not online. There are many collections that record the lives of our
ancestors in Germany as well as their lives after they have arrived
here in the United States, but finding them can be daunting. The
strategies presented here will help break down brick walls that
genealogists may encounter in their research.

When Ernst Lubitsch left Berlin for Hollywood at the end of 1922 to direct a film with Mary Pickford, he was the most successful German film director. He became famous in America in the 1920s for suggestive, "sophisticated" comedy that got past the censors. During the mid-1930s, strict enforcement of film censorship guidelines made it difficult for Lubitsch. By the late 1930s, he was making comedies set

in Europe that were more overtly political. His most famous comedy, To Be or Not to Be, was an anti-Nazi comedy that was controversial in 1942 but has since inspired many filmmakers, including Mel Brooks.

Rick McCormick, a professor of German at the University of Minnesota, is a scholar of German film and culture whose work focuses on the intersection of art, culture, and politics, with a special emphasis on gender, sexuality, and ethnic/national identity. His work has explored how postwar German film has represented the legacy of the Holocaust and Nazism as well as the complex political and cultural dynamics of Germany'sWeimar Republic (1918-1933). He is working on a book on Lubitsch.

This Event is Free & Open to the Public

Friends of the IHRC Annual Meeting, Dinner and Program

The annual meeting of the Friends of the IHRC will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2011, 6:00pm - 9:00pm, at the Minnesota Humanities Center, 987 Ivy Avenue East, St. Paul, MN 55106. The cost for dinner and the program is $25 per person, advance reservations are required (see information below).

This year's program will feature a report by historians Dr. Marilyn Chiat, Professor Jeanne Halgren Kilde and doctoral candidate Anduin Wilhide on their research into religious congregations and houses of worship formed by early settlers in nine neighborhoods developed along the Mississippi River between 1849 and 1924. The research project explores such themes as community creation, ethnicity and identity, relationships among congregations, intra-congregational interactions, the role of houses of worship, and social class structures. The goal of the project is to document the long heritage of religious diversity that has been central to this area's growth and development.
In Vikings in the Attic, Eric Dregni tracks down and explores the significant--often bizarre--historic sites, tales, and traditions of Scandinavia's peculiar colony in the Midwest. Dregni reveals the little-known tales that lie beneath the surface of Nordic America and proves by example why generations of Scandinavian-Americans have come to love and cherish these tales and traditions so dearly.

NEWS RELEASE: Friends of IHRC receive Minnesota Legacy Grant

Local organization directly benefits from funds appropriated by the Legacy Act. Minneapolis (September 5, 2010) - The Friends of the Immigration History Research Center, in collaboration with historians Marilyn J. Chiat and Jeanne Halgren Kilde, have been awarded a Historical and Cultural Heritage Grant of $13,123, from the Minnesota Historical Society.

The grant will support research into religious congregation and houses of worship formed by early settlers in nine neighborhoods developed in the Twin Cities along the Mississippi River between 1849 and 1924. The project, titled "Houses of Worship and the Settlement of the Twin Cities," will explore such themes as community creation, ethnicity and identity, relationships among congregations, intra-congregational interactions, the role of houses of worship, and social class structures. The goal of the project is to document for contemporary Twin Citians and for future generations the long heritage of religious diversity that has been central to this region's growth and development.

The Friends of the IHRC is a non-profit, auxiliary organization associated with the University of Minnesota's Immigration History Research Center. It is dedicated to promoting interdisciplinary research on international migration, developing archives documenting immigration and refugee life, and making specialized scholarship available to students, teachers, and the public. Dr. Chiat is the author of "America's Religious Architecture: Sacred Places for Every Community" (1997), and the "Spiritual Traveler: Chicago and Illinois" (2004). She has served as a historical consultant on public television documentaries, "Country Spires" (1998) and "Iron Range: Minnesota Building America" (2009). Dr. Kilde is the director of the Religious Studies Program at the University of Minnesota and the author of several books, including "Sacred Power, Sacred Space: An Introduction to Christian Architecture and Worship" (2008), and "Nature and Revelation: A History of Macalester College" (2010).

The Exile Mission: The Polish Political Diaspora and Polish Americans, 1930-1956

Anna Jaroszynska-Kirchmann, a professor of history at Eastern Connecticut University will talk about her new book, The Exile Mission: The Polish Political Diaspora and Polish Americans, 1939-1956. The talk will be held at the Polish American Library, 2514 Central Avenue NE, Minneapolis on December 29 at 7:00 PM. Parking on street and behind the building.

The Exile Mission: The Polish Political Diaspora and Polish Americans, 1939-1956

At midcentury, two distinct Polish immigrant groups--those Polish Americans who were descendants of economic immigrants from the turn of the twentieth century and the Polish political refugees who chose exile after World War II and the communist takeover in Poland--faced an uneasy challenge to reconcile their concepts of responsibility toward the homeland.

The new arrivals did not consider themselves simply as immigrants, but rather as members of the special category of political refugees. They defined their identity within the framework of the exile mission, an unwritten set of beliefs, goals, and responsibilities, placing patriotic work for Poland at the center of Polish immigrant duties.

In The Exile Mission, an intriguing look at the interplay between the established Polish community and the refugee community, Anna Jaroszynska-Kirchmann presents a tale of Polish Americans and Polish refugees who, like postwar Polish exile communities all over the world, worked out their own ways to implement the mission's main goals. Between the outbreak of World War II and 1956, as Professor Jaroszynska-Kirchmann demonstrates, the exile mission in its most intense form remained at the core of relationships between these two groups.

The Exile Mission is a compelling analysis of the vigorous debate about ethnic identity and immigrant responsibility toward the homeland. It is the first full-length examination of the construction and impact of the exile mission on the interactions between political refugees and established ethnic communities.

European Children Adoption Services (ECAS) is working in partnership with a Kiev-based charity fund to bring Ukrainian orphan children and sibling groups, ages from 6 to 12, to stay with host families in the Twin Cities area.

· 15 - 20 orphan children from Ukraine spending four fun filled weeks with a local host family, enjoy family life, make new friends and have a typical American summer experience.

· Although adoption is not the objective of this program, many of the children who participated are eventually adopted by either the host family or other families who meet them during their visit.

· Since 2003 this program has allowed more than 100 children to find their forever family in the USA.

· ECAS is a non-profit 501(c) 3 international adoption agency licensed in Minnesota that is dedicated to the welfare of the world's orphan children. www.ecasus.org

Ukrainian School parent, Gail Voss, adopted her child, Sadie, through ECAS. Sadie has attended Ukrainian school for numerous years and is currently in our oldest class. Ukrainian School at St. Michael's and St. George's Ukrainian Orthodox Church would like to welcome the ECAS and the Ukrainian orphans.

You are invited to join us for this event.

Thousands of children pass through the orphanage system in Ukraine each year. There is a small chance for these children to have a permanent family after they reach school age. If you are interested in helping these children (and others at their institution) beyond attending the event, you may consider a financial donation or any new/gently used items below by bringing them on August 15.

· Underwear

· Socks

· Rolling backpacks

· Games for children to have on the trip home (remember the kids do not speak English - so games need to be appropriate for non-English speakers)

· Winter clothing

· 20 pair of winter boots for kids ages 8 to 14 - more for the older kids (exact sizes unknown)

· 50 kids need jeans and tennis shoes - mainly for boys - age range 4 to 14.

· 23 winter jackets needed for:

o 13 year old boy

o 12 year old boy

o 11 year old boy

o 10 year old boy

o 2 - 10 year old girls

o 2 - 9 year old boys

o 9 year old girl

o 8 year old boy

o 8 year old girl

o 2 - 7 year old boys
