Human Trafficking in Minneapolis

I can honestly say that learning about the amount of human trafficking in Minneapolis amazed me. I was so shocked to hear that the Twin Cities is the 13th largest center for child prostitution in the nation. As we learned, one of the biggest myths that people believe is that trafficking only happens "over there". When in truth, this type of activity goes on right under our noses here where we live our lives. The most saddening part was to learn that of all the prostitution that happens in Minneapolis is "survival sex". I'm fortunate enough to be able to (with the help of my family) afford to go to school, pay for my food, and have most of my other extra expenses taken care of. These women and children need to sell their bodies just to make ends meet. I couldn't even imagine the physically and emotional damage they have to endure.trafficking.jpg

You mentioned that women who are involved with sex trafficking "sell their bodies to make ends meet." I think that it is extremely important that in addition the to the coercive economic position that you mentioned above, women involved with sex trafficking also lose autonomy over how, when, and where they ave sex.

In the case of sex trafficking, women are forced into sex work AND the decision for sex work to happen, where it happens, when it happens, and how it happens are made by the trafficker.
