Boondocks is a satirical political cartoon that caricatures the stereotypical lives of African Americans. In our Tricia Rose readings this week, she pointed out the great mistrust a lot of African Americans have for the police. This is a great depiction of this characterization and a portrayal of what she is talking about.
Although I couldnt get the vid to load, I did here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73q9SBgcOYE.
I like the way the Boondocks addresses these realities, but for some reason I keep feeling like the Boondocks dont quite fulfill its potential. Tricia Rose's depictions of wrongs in the hip hop community in the readings are usually all followed up with encouraging action to resist these ideas. The boondocks usually make some sort of social commentary on the ideas, but dont strongly make a case for what/why people should change things.
Does the Boondocks NEED to do that like Tricia Rose? No. But should it encourage change making? I say yes. Until then, the line between addressing stereotypes and perpetuating/validating them remains a lil too thin for my liking.
